Very interesting tweet from S9mm

What are you people expecting? If it is nothing like OW1, it won’t be overwatch anymore.

I think Aaron said that a closed beta would begin soon with pros under NDA. That’s what I’m referring to when I say the tweet being deleted is not a good sign. He said it would begin “this week” in the dev update so idk if they’re playing it now?

As far as I know I’m pretty sure the OWL pros are scrimming on OW2 closed alpha right now. As for s9mm’s Tweet, like I said, dude complains about everything. Plus “so bored” could mean lots of things. He’s a player on a team with lots of promising DPS talent like Proper and Kilo, maybe he’s a bench player and doesn’t like it.

and he deleted the tweet lol

That’s the thing. His exact words were im already bored. It’s that word already that kinda has me thinking  .

Sequels usually introduce two things:

  1. Fresh, new gameplay mechanics: OW2 PvP offers nothing new in this regard.
  2. New campaign: there is the PvE side of OW2, but it’s not here yet.

So it’s no surprise that some people get bored of OW2 PvP if they were already bored with OW1.

It introduces 5v5 which will change the whole way we play Overwatch.

It will rework all the tanks to not be tanks anymore but to now be brawlers which brings big gameplay changes as well.

All 32 current heroes will get some type of tweaks or reworks to work in the 5v5 system which changes the way we play the game.

4-6 new heroes which in the past just the introduction of one hero has changed the whole game around.

The deletion of a whole game mode in 2CP and the introduction of two new game modes one which is push which again changes the whole way we play Overwatch.

Several new maps which bring something fresh to the table as far as new gameplay locations.

Upgraded graphics and sounds which sequels usually have upgrades to these things.

To say ow2 doesn’t bring any fresh gameplay mechanics is complete nonsense.

Like I said before , people expect game play changes like all the heroes competing in gymnastics instead of shooting each other or something like that.

It is a team game. Overwatch is all about how heroes interact with each other, this is how team strats are made. It is not just that they removed a tank, they have removed tank synergies that teams play around, they have removed offtanks and everything offtanks did (it was a lot).

If you look at fight structure of poke, engage, mid-fight, cleanup, poke is just positioning and looking for some advantage. Once there is an advantage Tanks lead the engage, I’d say this is consistently the most exciting time of a team fight. Sure you might get a lucky pick during poke, but generally it is the engage where the action happens. The engage is where the Tank synergies really play out, by removing one tank, it is not that blizz just removed one team member, they removed a big part of what makes team fights the fun and exciting thing that they are.

I highly suspect he was ‘told’ to take it down.

NDA is an NDA, even hinting at the contents of it or ‘reviewing it’ (even thought the tweet was vague it was also very timely) likely breaks it… :upside_down_face:

WOOOOO!

PREACH IT SON!

YEEEEEeeeaaahhh…?

  • 5v5 is nothing new. We already have that when both teams are down 1 player.
  • Hero reworks/tweaks aren’t really new. We have had many of those in OW1. Only a couple of heroes get a rework out of 32 anyway.
  • New heroes are cool, but a few more on top of the base 32 isn’t that impactful.
  • Deletion of a mode is not new mechanic. Push mode is cool and all but the base shooting experience is the same.
  • New maps are good but they are not new mechanics.
  • The graphics don’t look all that different to me from what I have seen so far. It’s just a minor upgrade.

All in all these changes fit an expansion better than a sequel. OW2 PvP is more like an expansion to OW1 PvP.

Some examples of what I consider new mechanics (not saying they are good ideas for OW, btw): destructible environments, vehicles, cover system, upgradable weapons, etc…

There is also the OW2 PvE talent system that, if applied to PvP in some way, would bring a lot of new depths to the gameplay.

That’s a bit of a disingenuous way of putting it. OW2’s entire balance philosophy will be centred around 5v5. The same can’t be said for the current game.

A single hero release in OW1 had the potential to completely shake everything up, as was seen with Brig or Sigma for example. A bunch of heroes dumped all at the same time will be enormous.

There have been some side-by-side comparisons floating around (None on me at the moment unfortunately) which show it a lot better. I saw a comparison of Baptiste’s OW1 and OW2 skins up close. It’s a huge improvement imo.

It’s a different balance philosophy but it isn’t a new gameplay experience.

A hero can shake the balance, but ultimately the game plays mostly the same.

That’s more on the effort of the artist and less on the game engine.

lol they deleted it ? must have recieved a discord call from bliz MIB.

It’s definitely not a completely different experience, but it’s not the same as the current game minus two players.

At it’s core, sure. That’s obvious. But to how players perceive the gameplay, it makes a difference. Nobody is going to start playing OW2 and think “Wow nothing has changed”

Don’t see the point here. I was just noting how the graphics have improved.

Most of those changes would make Overwatch not feel like Overwatch anymore might as well just make a new game and call it something else.

When I play a Hitman game and then I play one of the sequels the gameplay doesn’t drastically change around from the basics which is sneak around kill people put on their clothes and do what you have to do in order to kill the Target and get out.

When the Hitman sequel comes out it’s not like I stop being a Hitman and all of a sudden I’m a wrestler having to wrestle opponents in the ring for money.

I agree. I just listed them as examples. But that PvE talent tree though? I’d love to have them in some form in PvP.

This is true interms of general games, but not so interms of esports game.

There are very few esports games that have iterated, i will list on top of my head.

  1. Counter strike - 1.6, source, cs go are all same more or less, most new maps werent even well recieved, people complained about dust doors back then they still complain about it to this day.

2.Quake - 123 then live were all similar and did good.
QC was actually much different introducing hero elements and has actually failed.
I wouldnt say thats the only reason the engine performance was a bigger issue but you get the idea.

Dota 1 and 2 - I cant really compare here cause dota1 was more of a mod. Dota2 is practically the first standalone iteration.

In general its a bad idea to launch a sequel to a esports game, you try to run it as a live service as long as possible with updates, as seen from most titles.
You also dont want to make major changes interms of gameplay mechanics and design.

You can however upgrade the engine to be better, and certainly graphical updates are always welcome.

:joy:

This is absolute gold.
