Unable to turn off mute on voice and text and hero comms

it shows me that I have my friends muted on voice chat and text and hero comms and I’m unable to unmute them or change the setting, the only solution is to restart the game and then after I play a game the same issue repeats itself. My friends have also had the same issue.

I am having the same issue as well. I play with my gf who’s on xbox and I play PC. She can hear me but I cant hear her and it shows she muted.

Yea I have the exact same problem, for me it automatically mutes the text and hero comms of my friend on Xbox who it was working fine with a few hours ago and it doesn’t let you undo it, it doesn’t let you whisper them either and says its something to do with my “cross-play communication settings” yet there isn’t a setting i could find that fixed it… so just literally cant speak to my cross-play friends atm…

Same here, I thought it was some kind of option but it seems I am the only one (PC player) that cannot chat or listen the others (PS5, Xbox). They still can hear me but I can’t hear them.

When I try to whisper to my friend it says it’s not available in crossplay.

I have the same issue I can’t see nor whisper any of my ps friends and I can’t click either as yall have said it’s so annoying bc most of my friends are on ps while I’m on pc, it started with the new season has never been a problem before at all.

Same here. I guess this is why I’ve been told to use Discord instead.

What fixed it for me was going to the battlenet privacy settings and then toggling voice chat to off and then listening and speaking

This worked for me as well

I’ve been experiencing this issue too.

Restarting Battle.net temporarily resolves it, but the issue returns any time any options are changed in Overwatch (even unrelated, such as video settings).

Squid’s proposed solution:

“What fixed it for me was going to the battlenet privacy settings and then toggling voice chat to off and then listening and speaking”

^ ^ This did not resolve it for me. It only temporarily resolved it the same way that restarting Battle.net temporarily resolves it.

In addition to comms being muted and the inability to remove the mute by unchecking it, attempts to whisper/DM (direct message) any person who is playing on console results in the following error message in Overwatch:

“Your message cannot be viewed due to your Cross-Play communication settings.”

Details:

Issue: In Overwatch on PC, unable to communicate with people who are on console / using Cross-Play.

Unable to communicate with people on console / cross-play if any settings are adjusted or after a duration of time (not sure how long - maybe 5 to 20 minutes).

This can be observed either by right-clicking any person on your friends list who has the cross-play symbol on their player card or by entering a match/game and pressing P to view the Social > Groups settings (where you can choose which voice channel you are in) and observing that any accounts with the cross-play symbol on them show a slash through either their text comms or text and voice comms symbol (to the right of their username in this Social > Group settings.

To reproduce:

  • Open Overwatch, & look at friends in Social.
  • Right-click a friend with the Cross-Play symbol over their player card and note that “Mute Text and Hero Comms” is checked and cannot be unchecked.
  • Invite Cross-Play player to a group and note that “Mute Voice” is checked and cannot be unchecked.
  • Right-click any Cross-Play friend and attempt to send a whisper message.
  • Receive error, “Your message cannot be viewed due to your Cross-Play communication settings.”

(Unable to find a “Cross-Play communication setting” anywhere in Overwatch, the Battle.net app, or the Battle.net account.)

Temp Workaround:

  • Exit Overwatch (and ensure its not running with Task Manager)
  • Exit Battle.net
  • Restart Battle.net
  • Restart Overwatch

Observe that Cross-Play people are not muted:

  • Go to Options and change ANY option, such as a sound volume, video setting, keybind, or any setting at all.

  • Observe that everyone (friend of match-mate) on console / with Cross-Play is muted for text, emotes, and comms with no ability to unmute them (clicking the r-click menu choice to toggle to unmute does nothing.)

Other things I tried that did not resolve the issue:

  • Renaming the Overwatch settings ini file in the Documents\Overwatch folder and restarting Overwatch.
  • Used BleachBit to clear the caches of Battle.net then restarted Battle.net and Overwatch. This did not resolve the issue.
  • Toggled the Battle.net account setting for Voice Chat off and then back on as follows: Logged into Battle.net in my browser, went to Account Settings > Privacy & Communication > select “Update” to change settings, toggled Voice Chat to “Off,” saved the settings, waited a few seconds, toggled Voice Chat to “Listening & Speaking,” saved the settings, started Battle.net, started Overwatch, checked whether comms were muted for console/cross-play friends by right-clicking on one and observing that the “mute” options were not checked, went to options and toggled a setting, then checked whether “mute comms” was checked for console friends and confirmed that they were checked and unchecking them was unsuccessful. (I did this twice: once only while both Overwatch and Battle.net were closed, once while they were both running. (When both running, the Battle.net app updated after I saved the change in my browser, and Overwatch exited with a message stating I was removed from chat when I disabled it, so the changes were applying.))

So far, I have not found a permanent fix for this. I have already submitted a bug report in the Battle.net app by clicking the menu and choosing, “Report a Bug.”

I recommend reporting it as well so they can be aware of how many people it’s affecting.

Thank you for that detailed description. It’s exactly the same for me.

Blizzard please fix - I can not play with my console buddies - they can hear me but always stay muted on my side (PC).
