To Those Complaining about "Lack of Content"

It’s normal to get bored of a game. It’s why even though they’re all free to play, I stopped playing Fortnite/League/Apex quite awhile ago even though they’re still adding content. I play Overwatch & other games too.

They might lose people right now but they’ll gain far more by having more content with OW2’s release. Releasing content now will only maybe satisfy the small amount of people left. Releasing a bunch of content with OW2 will satisfy millions

While Overwatch was receiving regular content from Brigs release->Echo’s release the playerbase was plummeting, not rising. Content does not = more players unless done right. At this point, content would do little to nothing in regards to increasing the playerbase. What will increase the playerbase dramatically is relaunching the game with OW2 & everything they’re working on with it.

First, Overwatch content hasn’t stopped, it’s slowed while they work on OW2 which will give us a ton of new content and likely be supported for years after, so we’re still getting updates just not as consistently. Second, there are apparently multiple definitions/versions of “live service games”, Overwatch has a totally different business model than Fortnite/Apex/League, yet they’re all considered “live service games”? I think the term is being thrown around a little too loosely

So… you’re blaming Overwatch’s playerbase for not making better workshop modes? I’m confused. Or, blaming the dev team for not making it easier/possible to build maps for OW workshop? That has nothing to do with the tangible content they released with heroes/maps/modes etc.

Heroes, maps, modes, features, role queue

Yes, we all have different mentalities. I just struggle to understand how someone can feel like they didn’t get their moneys worth unless they just don’t like Overwatch.

If we look at what we got in 2016 (with far less heroes, modes, features etc.) and see how popular it was for years, I think it’s mathematically impossible for OW2 which will have everything OW1 has come out with over the past several years and more to somehow fall on its face and be a dead game within a year or two.

I think this is mathematically impossible given what I just said.

You’re talking about an extremely small minority of people. That is not a lot of revenue in the grand scheme of things. There are many people who work on this game who have worked on it for years.

The OW2 I’m referring to is adding new heroes, new cosmetics, new maps, new modes, new features, new balance changes & team size changes, graphical & sound updates to existing heroes/abilities, and possibly more at no cost to me. The only way I’m required to spend money is if I want to play the PvE.

Not sure what you’re referring to. There’s 32 heroes and each have around 100 or more cosmetic unlockables including voice lines/skins/intros etc. all unlockable for free. That’s over 3200 unlockables without spending a dime. I’ve had nearly every cosmetic for quite a long time, the ones I don’t have I just don’t want to spend my credits on in case a new event skin wow’s me.

Yea, I’ve been confused as to why people are comparing OW to free to play games with microtransactions for everything including characters and the majority of cosmetics. They keep saying “live service game” as if that’s a 1 size fits all term even though monetization schemes are very different from game to game

If you’re a 1 trick of a niche hero like Bastion then I could understand that, but there’s 32 heroes to choose from.

Yes I do, but I also spent hundreds or even Thousands of dollars on my phone/PC’s, not $40. If I bought a $40 phone I would expect nothing except for it breaking within a year.

Not really. I’m not complaining about them being updated though.

I don’t fail to see it. I understand player retention is important. I understand releasing content for OW1 would please the players that are still playing. The point I’m making is the more content we take from OW2 to put into OW1 will be detrimental long term. While content right now will make the current playerbase happier, it will mean less content released with OW2 which will result in less interest, less new & returning players, & less players retained overall.

A new hero could drop tomorrow and while there would definitely be some players who would come back to try them out and try the game again for a short time, that pales in comparison to OW2 adding all that it plans to add and having millions of players come back because there is so much to try, not just 1 new thing.

:ok_hand: All a matter of personal opinion. I’m still having fun playing

True, but if they want they have 32 heroes to choose from.

And you would have fun doing it. I don’t think you replayed games if you hated them. You could find better things to do.

And that’s perfectly fine :ok: I’d rather not give more free content to OW1 if it’s detrimental to the game in the long term.

OW2 should be very exciting to look forward to, we just haven’t had much revealed so there isn’t a lot to talk about.

Have they not done so? We’re getting a new map as we speak, and will continue to get more content for the next few years. They haven’t broken their promises

If you want more people & more queue times you should be ecstatic for OW2, that’s what’s actually going to bring players in & lower queue times.

It’s F2P for all OW owners, which I would assume everyone on the forums is.

Considering you seem to be expecting more content, you should probably care about how they’re making money. They can’t make content without money.

Did they? You might be right, though I know no one who spent a dime on lootboxes. Only thing I can think of is Pink Mercy and maybe an OWL skin at most. Even so, how much do you think it took to pay all the employees who worked on Overwatch the past 5 years? Lets just say there’s 100 employees (if you know the answer let me know) even if they only got paid $60k each per year (not a whole lot) that’s 6 million dollars. Obviously if that salary or the amount of employees goes up you’re looking at a whole lot of money, and obviously the company itself needs to profit, not just pay its employees, otherwise OW isn’t going to get content.

I’m just looking at history. From Brigitte->Echo the playerbase fell off a cliff. A steady stream of content did not keep a large playerbase.

Ah, so do you think OW has always been awful in regards to content?

New content being released as it was for OW1 is not bringing in new players, at least not any meaningful amount. OW2 will without a doubt bring in a meaningful amount of players both new & old

No, you’re confused on what I’m saying.

What the game needs to be revived/healthy is OW2, not new content right now. New content right now will just please whoever’s left, which isn’t a whole lot. OW2 will please a whole lot more

I don’t see how they lied. They said they were going to update the game and support it, they’ve been doing it for years and haven’t stopped, and have no plans on stopping as far as we’ve heard, content has just slowed down while they focus on OW2. Slowing isn’t stopping.

That’s a term very loosely thrown around it seems. OW does not have the same monetization scheme as Fortnite/Apex/League, you pay 1 small fee, get all the characters and can unlock everything else for free, none of those games are like that. Most of what they offer is behind battlepasses/microtransactions. Much of what is offered can’t be unlocked just by playing, or if it can be it requires an immense amount of playtime.

Keeping 1 million players happy is not as important as expanding the playerbase by millions if you want the game to keep getting content for years to come. If you just care about right now and want content right now then you’re right, but I care about more than just right now, I plan to play OW/OW2 for years.

The massive amount of changes/additions to balance/heroes/maps/modes etc.

:100:

Continuing to release content as they were would have kept us on the same path of a declining playerbase & longer queue times. OW2 actually guarantees the playerbase will increase drastically

Yes, wait and see, though I think it’s mathematically impossible for OW2 to not exponentially increase the playerbase

I mean, I don’t see it as nothing. My preferred form of content is new heroes/maps/modes to play

I’ve already addressed this. If you just don’t like Overwatch then you should be playing something else. Every game isn’t for everyone.

I am indeed pretty casual in my engagement with Overwatch. There’s no sense in taking it so seriously unless you’re going pro
