Time to talk about Mei's walls, and what people don't know about them

I am a former Mei main. 2-tricked her and Ana pre 2-2-2. Using them and tons of research and practice I broke into Diamond for the first time ever. Mei is one of the most versatile (but still limited!) dps in the game.

You named a ton of good tricks and scenarios I just wanted to add a couple/expand on some.

This my friend is called herding. It’s an undervalued and undermentioned tool. You can use this method to both direct ur team mates or the way I like to do is control the pathing of the enemies. If you place a wall so there’s a gap the enemy is more likely to funnel themselves or force hero’s like Hanzo to jump up or climb a wall to get some LOS but also exposing him.

This method requires really good game sense of course.

Another one I might have missed or skimmed over is the “Podium” move. Essentially you use the wall to elevate certain targets above shields or hiding behind cars/cover to expose them for pew pew. At my peak I had this motion down so well I could shoot directly after wall and nail the disoriented elevated target. Works wonders on tanks.

Good Post though. Love the Mei love. And this is coming from a Tank main (who uninstalled 2 months ago due to constant tank nerfs ruining the entire role for me)

Totally. I wanted to mostly talk about the ability to use her to shut down deployed abilities.
But pushing people up so your team can shoot them is huge.

Yeah, I call it herding as well :), it is even useful in high ranks, but for low ranked play it is super strong.

Yeah, I hopped over to the DPS role, because of how they were treating the other roles. Like, I couple play something which will always be strong, rather than have roles gutted, from under you.

I can well understand why you left playing Tank. The only time I will tank is for tickets, and even then I don’t want to.

I can enjoy other roles but it just leaves me wanting. I don’t care if they are trying to give tanks less sustain or whatever they are trying but they keep ruining the identity and flow of the tanks.

Orisa’s halt for instance. It’s the easiest to use as an example and was the biggest nerf. It’s useless for anything other then a a root 90% of the time. I get that it was too powerful as a mini grav, especially for higher ranks. But all they had to do was literally set a limit of 1-2 people that can get tagged (one at max 7m range 1 at 4m range). Make it the closest individuals to the epicenter of Orb and Blam! It can’t be used to combo half a team.

Hell you’d even add counter play with tanks or heros with invulnerability abilities taking the Halt to protect ur Zen or Ana or something. But nope, they just gutted it.

Orisa’s halt really hits home for me. It was the tank equivalent of wall.

pinning someone down so they can’t escape an ult?
pulling people off high ground?
environmental kills?
pulling people above shields?
sensory halts to see if someone is behind a wall?
diverting a dive?
peeling for supports?
disrupting a hog hook?
etc.

It was actually a versatile, and interesting ability. You could do a lot with it if you were smart. The difference between a good and a REALLY great Orisa player was all the ways they used that ability.

That is the kind of thing I would have hoped the game would be all about. But…

Well you know the rest. You have a hero with one SUPER interesting power, and you decide that is the ability you want to nerf out.

Ah, that makes sense why I see so much chat about Mei today in the forums!

We gotta talk about our faved characters, amIrightGuys?

I wouldn’t underestimate her basic attacks too heavily, as if your aim is gr8, I can see the icicle being a hell of a DPS basic attack, and the mist can be extremely annoying for some characters to deal with. I basically use her ult to either combo or zone the enemies out. So, knowing what you said here…

Is really interesting to note to self. I tend to be real good at tanking, so thinking in this direction, it actually would make no sense for me to be trash at Mei, but I don’t play Mei too often, so it makes sense that I’d be bad in this sense. But, what you’ve stated here is real helpful for me to improve my Mei gameplay. I’m an ok Mei overall, but my worst usage, which is probably her best gimmic I believe, is her Wall. So the information you’ve provided here is going to be real helpful!

In actuality, Mei’s character can be used in limitless potential. The entire characters kit is open for pure creativity.

It is, but it isn’t a lot of damage per second. It doesn’t have enough to snipe someone as a one shot. It doesn’t have the fire rate to make up for it with raw damage.

It puts it in an interesting place. It is good to punish someone who is already hurt. Or to farm ult. It hurts enough you can’t ignore it for long.

I think a lot of people over estimate the damage from it, because Mei players learn to go after targets already hurt to finish them, because you can’t use it like a regular DPS gun.

You need to know who you are going to be hitting well fire the shot is fired.

It is fire, snap to the targets position they are going to be in, and then it shoots. It is a very odd projectile, so a lot of people struggle with it. Generally you gotta plan for it.

I’m pretty sure most people know how strong walls are. In fact it was mentioned quite often in a thread about top 5 abilities in the game. The problem is the rest of her kit isn’t very inspiring.

yes
400 hp PER PILLER
the entire wall itself is equal to 2000 hp as there are 5 pillers
no shield is that strong
my statement is not false

their still fairly fast
were not talking about symmetra orbs here
they move at 115 meters per second. sure that isn’t hitscan but that is still fast
for refference hanzo an actual sniper shoots at 110 meters per second with a full charge arrow
Genji a close range hero shoots a shuriken at 60 meters per second

Slow Projectiles as you say would be something like Phara’s rocketsa 35 mps projectile
or 25 mps symmetra orbs (same speed as zarya right clicks btw)

so please don’t say her shots travel slowly
as they don’t
their one of the fastest projectiles in the game

My fav is throwing Blizzard then walling back to front directly below myself to raise me off ground, you’re way less likely to die compared to just running around on foot

Same for Mei 1v1 duels

Ah, I understand. So, like a finisher, in a sense?

I generally think Mei’s always been an awkward, unique character. Like a few months ago, I tried to determine what type of DPS she tends to be between my list of 3 different types: Burst, Flanker and Hitscan. It ended up being very mixed with Burst and Flanker, or something completely different all-together. I was able to categorize every DPS but Mei to the proper category. Since I am talking to a Mei mein here, maybe you could aid me with this? (Ok, I won’t do that again, mein) So, going back to the icicle, I can completely understand why it is an awkward projectile. Some think she’s a sniper cause of it (she’s not), some think other wild thoughts, it gets crazy when you think about it.

You can also use it to get through chokes. Good reinhardts will stay behind a corner, you can just playce a wall at the choke so you can just walk through

Wall has by far mroe uses, its the most compelx abillity in a brawl mirror and its sad ranked doesnt notices its full potential

this is because people want to play the game their way and do not want to use resources already available.

You only need 400 to get though it. You don’t need 2000 hp. 400 damage to it, and you can walk and fire though it. Trying to compare that to say Rein’s barrier?

You can ALSO wall under Rein as he’s pinning an ally and potentially save them, making Rein collide with it and dropping someone he already has in his pin. Wall under Orisa or Bastion to feed them to Hanzo.

Bow down to the Queen of Ice!

abandon’s projectiles being slow

yes this is true you only have to get through one piller
but the entire wall is equal to 2000 hp
which is stronger than any shield in the game
I don’t know why that is so hard for you to understand

If you are any real distance away yeah you 100% deserve to be hit.

I understand that in total it has more health, but that doesn’t make it strong when you only have to get though a small part of it.

yes
I deserve to be hit by the fastest projectile in the game
faster than hanzo arrows
projectiles that are considered hitscan by people
so yea I definitely deserve it
