Thoughts On Old & New Heroes?

Overwatch launched with 21 heroes back in 2016. Since then, 18 new heroes have been added to the game, and by the end of 2024, when Venture, Space Ranger, and the unnamed tank hero that was briefly teased at BlizzCon are all released, the original roster size will have doubled.

I’d be curious to hear everyone’s general thoughts on both the “Vanilla Heroes” and the “DLC Heroes”, since we’ll soon have an equal amount of both. So;

Vanilla Heroes:

  • What are your general thoughts on the original roster from 2016?
  • Who’s your favorite of the original 21 heroes?
  • Do you miss the Damage heroes being divided into Offense & Defense?
  • Do you think any of the original heroes need(ed) to be reworked?

DLC Heroes:

  • How many of the new heroes do you like / think are good additions to the game?
  • Do you think any of the new heroes have been bad for the overall health of the game?
  • Do you think the distribution of new heroes across the roles has been good?
  • How many more heroes do you think should be added, if any?

(You don’t have to answer all of these questions, they’re meant to just serve as a guideline for sharing your thoughts about both groups of heroes, though you can answer them all if you want :D)

And in case you need a refresher;

Hit or miss still for how good they are / adapted to the games changes.

Probably soldier and tracer.

As in that we have gotten more tanks and supports compared to dps? Then yes, as we still have the most dps, and always will. I do think we are at a point where there are enough tanks and supports that each role getting a new hero every 3rd release is good.

I don’t think rein fits well into ow2. No idea how to rework him, but think he needs changes more than just number tweaks.

Quite a few. I think it depends how balanced they are too. Heroes like brig and sig were so stupid when they came out, but are much more reasonable now. I do think some of the worst heroes to play with and against are dlc ones, like doom and ball.

Definitely doom and ball. Launch sigma and brig too. Also mauga, either op or pretty bad. And his design of look at tank and hold both buttons down is crap.

Nope. Makes 0 difference other than trying to help new players. And for heroes like widow who are often actually better on attack, wasn’t really accurate.

I think the 3 per year will be a good amount. More per year and it would always be a state of balance being awful trying to balance around frequent releases. But at the same time new heroes make it fun.

I just have short answers cuz most of them could be quite a big topic each.

I like playing all 39

Also think they should’ve stopped adding them several heroes ago

The only DLC hero that rubs me the wrong way is Ramattra, and it’s just his ult.

Other than that, all the characters are pretty chill. There are some that frustrate me a little, like Junkrat, Doomfist, Wrecking Ball, etc. but they all have their places and uses and I’m okay with them.
