Back before role queue (and even now in Quickplay Classic), you can theoretically get an uber team by stacking tanks. But that’s not how the playerbase actually behaves. Instead, they pick the lowest number of tanks they can get away with. If the solo tank is holding it together, you’re not getting a second tank.
There’s nothing here that encourages more people to tank, it just discouraged them. If you’re a dedicated tank main, you’ll probably still tank, but the rest? You’ll be holding down the fort.
People really do insist that nerfing tanks makes players tank more. Or that they just don’t want to tank because Orisa’s in the game. When in fact, Orisa hasn’t been in the game for a month now and still no one tanks.
This is my issue. Forcing shield players on Rein isn’t going to fix anything it’s just going to make everyone and their mother despise Rein. Blizzard screwed this game up the moment they put more effort into a esports league the game was nowhere near ready for and slowed actual game development to a crawl for it. If we had decent updates with hero inclusions the game would be in a far better state. Dva wasn’t meta because she was magically OP back when, she was meta because THERE WAS NO OTHER TANK that did what she did. Sigma helps fill that role now but with a variation. He came out too strong and is in a balanced place right now. Nerfing the crap outta him/Orisa because reeeee shields doesn’t magically fix anything. It just trash tiers half the tank roster which is already woefully lacking.
They would, and it would be great fun for a while. But it would wreck most non-RQ gamemodes, make tanking much more stressful, and formally acknowledge that tanks > DPS.
Just balancing 2-2-2 properly by adding more tanks and supports while making them more fun to play would be less effort and probably end better.
Orisa/ Sigma are pretty average outside of GM, but are getting nerfed hard enough to stop them at the top of the game
Same with Baptiste
Those three are getting nerfed hard for the top, without care for the rest of the game.
Reinhardt is already uncontested outside of GM; and all this is doing is pretty much just cementing that until Reinhardt gets nerfed because he’s the only good tank left and we just keep the cycle going.
DPS players aren’t going to be happy about that. And it might not even help the queue times, because some off-tanks would go to the DPS along with their players.
I’m not a dedicated tank main yet the notion that I’ll be essentially throwing for my team by not picking the good tanks is precisely what drives me away. The knowledge that the other picks are just often so inferior or countered by the meta. It sucks, and it keeps me from even caring about playing tank anymore.
I dunno. Probably just an irreconcilable difference in perspective here. I’d personally love to play tank again. It’s the role I do best on, despite being overwhelmingly a dps player. But sigma/orisa is mind numbing and so are their gameplay loops. Especially when you start to play against really good teams. Last time I played tank it was at ~3900 during the start of double shield and lemme tell ya… that was rough. Even when we were doing good on other team comps we’d get flamed to switch.
Maybe a fourth try with the monthly quickplay stats that are easy to skew into fitting literally any argument. That would probably change my stance on it. Idk.
Which would help, but not a lot. There would still be queue time issues, unless tanks become a lot more popular.
The problem is that extra tanks would almost always be more effective than DPS in those modes. If tanks were much stronger in the current RQ, would you give one up for a normal DPS?
That doesn’t really make sense, nerfs before buffs? Why wouldn’t they just buff.
Or why wouldn’t they just wait to release the 321 then buff the tanks.
This! And their idea of balancing is just how do we make it clunky. Like you don’t feel like you’re less powerful just being roadblacked by bad mechanisms. Sigma is already a high tier skill management load. Making me worse off isn’t raising that skill ceiling. It just makes me unable to properly use the character I enjoy. I don’t like Rein, his motion blur gives me horrible headaches. Making Sigma unplayable isn’t going to make me run to Rein it’s just going to make me drop the game.
Like I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. The Balance team’s idea of ‘balance’ is throw crap at the wall and see what sticks until the backlash is so great they have to do something different. Since the Mercy ‘rework’ Nearly every single balance change has just spiraled this game into more and more unplayable territory.
