The former. And it’s “latter”, not “ladder”.
Meanwhile… the idea of this made me laugh ![]()
That’s part true but not entirely…
I mean, for as much as people assume it’s about putting the person who performed worse down, it can just as easily be about putting the other player who did well on a pedestal and giving them praise for playing well. The term isn’t inherently toxic, like all things it depends on the circumstance and application… so I mean, all these absolute opinions are flawed and are kind of silly looking IMO.
Y’know, I want a nice fluffy world too, but just because something isn’t patting everyone on both teams on the back and saying “you guys all did a good job, have a cookie” doesn’t inherently make something toxic or bad.
I have my own personal opinions on being able to take the smallest things in stride, or exuding SOME level of stoicism, especially if you’re just going to assume everything is -mean- or ill in spirit… and even then if it is, how bad is it really? Why are so many people so eager to throw the word toxic around, is it because it boosts their pseudo-morality?
But the point here is, everyone is EAGER to identify toxicity, everyone is EAGER to look at something that bothers them even if it’s just slightly in order to invalidate it and make themselves feel good about how they see the word… meanwhile they are unable to differentiate between the nuances of competitive gaming and the idea of circumstance… they just extract toxicity and with a grin they point their finger and say “THAT’S TOXIC”. Unsportsmanlike or not, toxic is not a word that should be used so lightly and the fact that everyone seems very excited to use it concerns me deeply.

More at 11.
ADD:
And even in the circumstances where the person saying it just saying it to be a jerk, it doesn’t make it any less of a potential objective statement, if those were the only words used. If one Rein played poorly and the other played well, so be it. It’s not the end of the world.
Since when is it toxic to compliment the winning team?
If an enemy team Widow is clicking heads and my Widow is just in perma spawn or shooting walls I will call that a Widow diff.
For every example of “positive” use, the negative is like easily 6x times that.
You will have to do more than convince me using relativism. I see daily how people use it, its virtually never used positively.
I heard all these same arguments defending “gg” and its clearly a backhanded comment 80% of the time.
This highlights my point though, you’re HAPPY to see the negativity in it, you’re looking for it, it’s the first thing that probably comes across your mind and then your morality goes haywire and you abide to your opinion like it was a part of your fundamental being… you’re not doing yourself any favours by viewing things that way… you’re looking for a crusade by creating one.
LOL - yes, its just my negativity coloring my view. Uh huh. Gotcha
I’m only possible of objectivity if I look at something from a position of positivity? That’s just a bias of different sort.
That’s not what I said. At all.
sometimes even the enemy says it and our team agrees. makes the person who did bad even saltier when the enemy says it first lol
I’m super guilty of that ngl
Or it is just black and white and toxic.
Isn’t that somewhat vapid and lazy, nay dangerous?
exactly! my dude! exactly what I think
Not when it’s as cut and dry as this.
People have to learn to deal with it.
If people call like tank diff, most of the time the team already accepted it, it’s just said for the cathartic effect.
A bad tank (relative to the enemy tank) won’t be able to step up his game, it’s gg next.
Gaming is not lovey dovey and can be pretty rough. That is common for a competitive environment
Well, that’s sort of the irony about this, isn’t it? You’re making it cut and dry, when in reality it’s not actually cut and dry. That’s exactly what I’ve been saying. Am I being unclear? Am I not reaching you or are you just refusing to entertain the possibility?
I’ve never seen it used that way, I always see it used by the losing team from a different role
I.e losing rein says dps diff
Losing bastion says tank diff
Etc
I’ve seen it used in a variety of circumstances from both sides so
Sorry but the ONLY times i see such comments in the game it is to blame the own [hero] for the lose.
…and it is usually most of the time (not always) heroes that already are prone to be blamed like Hanzo or Sombra etc.
Edit: so yes, everytime i see that it IS toxic!
Edit2: i really never saw that statement from the winning team, neither.
I will reiterate:
Thank you for your input.
