This is why the Field of View is small

The real reason is that quake pro fov looks bad for esports spectating.

:face_with_raised_eyebrow: Why is that?

Ultrawide fov is unsettling if you’re not used to it, and overall looks less cinematic; stuff on screen is tinier. Also perspective distortion starts becoming a factor.

It’s doesn’t have to be fisheyed. Just not as low as in OW. Besides, spectators can use any FoV, it doesn’t matter what players see.

Ehh they haven’t even added colorblind support yet, I’m not optimistic about that being in the engine. They should though, the current max is so claustrophobic it’s ever so slightly nauseating.

Didn’t play the beta when it was closed and did not play it that much when OW was in open beta. I am aware of the old FOV being “disgustingly low”.

Wouldnt the ability for a higher FoV help some people who get motion sickness too?

So “would a higher FOV cause motion sickness for some people?”
Sorry in advanced for not understanding your question.

Nope. With a higher FOV (not the extreme, the decent amount for PC gaming) targets around you don’t zip passed you in a flash and your movement feels normal so the speed is even.

On a lower FOV your movement speed and the speed of the world around you feels slow but your targets up close zip around so if you start tracking them it becomes very taxing. Imagine having a 1 dollar bill sized hole and you have to track something moving around you.

As for super high FOV…well it looks like you’re moving at “light speed” but the general rule remains with a decent FOV but this time your targets are way smaller. I’ve tried playing on super high FOV and did not feel sick or worn out and my friends who have tried the same thing did not feel sick.

I don’t think you know how this works

Higher FoV should help reducing motion sickness, but it’s only a part of the reason why game triggers such reaction. Just adjusting FoV is not enough to help people with motion sickness.

The only thing that has ever really bothered me about the field of view is the fact that when you back into an object, you rarely notice it until it’s too late. It feels very immersive to walk into a wall and not “feel” it.

It’s the kind of thing you get better at dealing with when you learn the maps inside out—but for the average player, it turns the field of view into a very frustrating element at times.

I wish Blizzard would combat this by adding a “bump” sound and/or some visual indication when your character runs into walls. Entirely optional of course.

Just listing ideas here, don’t necessarily want to see it implemented.

What if FoV changed depending on the hero selected?
A sniper I feel would have a bigger FoV. Tracer probably smaller.
I know that like stated above would give people an unfair advantage.
But make each hero, feel different.

Well another thing that causes motion sickness is bad mouse sensitivity combined with a very fast game.
But since FOV is one of the biggest causes of motion sickness in FPS games would it not be a rational and logical decision to increase the FOV to prevent it? Minimizing an issue as much as possible is better than doing nothing.

The bumps are due to either the player not being aware of the map or because of some corners/ edges that look smooth but aren’t. This can be fixed with some map tweaking.

This has nothing to do with the FOV unless due to the “perspective speed” of a low FOV and panic you don’t notice the bump.

This would be ok for war games with tanks.
For OW? No*1000000000000

Buying a better keyboard and mouse doesn’t give you anywhere near the advantage a larger fov would

Just turn up your volume? You will always have a blind spot, just rely on your hearing.

I will leave this old reply here

"The thing is you hear that jetpack somewhere on the map all the time, also while Pharah is still flying around behind some wall. You don’t suddenly hear it a lot louder when she has line of sight again if the difference is like two meters. So you can either start skimming the sky all the time as soon as you hear it, in which case she has already outplayed you by distracting you without even showing up, or you can ignore it until you actually see her, in which case justice may already be raining.

With Genji, the problem is not that I don’t know he’s nearby, I just have to spend too much time to find him again after a Swift Strike / double jump combo at an angle. The difference is only worth one shot maybe, but since he already has another free shot through Deflect, this is quite significant.

Oh, and as others have pointed out, 103 diagonal is fairly low for today’s standards. On the standard 16:9 format, for every 16 horizontal pixels you have sqrt(16²+9²) = sqrt(337) or approximately 18.4 diagonal pixels, so 103 diagonal FoV is equivalent to 103*(16/18.4) or approximately 89.8 horizontal FoV, which is nothing." - SaintVeloth

The most recent example I can give you is this.
I heard a pharah fire her rocket behind me and saw it land at a 40 degree angle.
I turned around and saw nothing and notice another rocket and looked where it came from and saw nothing, I turned my mouse so the screen flips 180 degrees and saw the pharah above me while in a team fight. All of this happened roughly in 3 seconds and in those 3 seconds the Pharah could have taken me out while looking around.

How was the audio? Well it sounded like she was behind me and then above me in a vague manner due to the noise that came from a team fight.
This would have been easy to deal with if it was a 1v1 moment but good players don’t jump on you when you’re not distracted.

Turning up your volume would do nothing but ruin your ears, mine are set to be loud enough to hear everything while not making my ears bleed.

But better hardware still gives the player a massive advantage.
A better keyboard gives you faster and more reliable inputs and are less likely to fail.
A better mouse gives the player a better grip and dpi which allows the players to be more accurate and have better inputs.
A better GPU combined with a 144hz monitor with or without G-sync gives players a more responsive and smoother video.

A higher FOV does not give players a massive advantage.

In a nutshell, getting good or having decent hand eye coordination is an unfair advantage and the game needs to have a handicap for aiming, a randomizer.

And a TLDR from my last reply, you’re more focused on the center of your screen and if you’re a PC user who isn’t 4 meters away from the screen having a higher FOV is more natural. So with the current FOV, depending on the moment and the player, you will suffer from a minor or a severe case of tunnel vision due to the game’s limiting FOV.

Are they expecting to have a field of vision that will let them see a pharah thats above them? And it shouldnt take you 3 seconds to spot the pharah when you know shes above you.

All Im saying is I use a headset with surround sound and have never had a problem spotting anyone.

Yes

No, I want more FOV vertically because if I in that moment had a vertical FOV of 90 or 100 instead of the current fixed value of 70 I would have spotted her in 1 attempt in less than a second.

Wrong. First it was behind at an angle and the moment I looked back in 1 second she was then above me and in the next second after looking up she was above and in front of me. Which means the enemy player used mobility to go from point A to B and drift to C (bare in mind the numbers are rough and the moment was not recorded so each “second” is more or less than the perfect value of 1 second).

Bare in mind you can’t hear everything perfectly when a team fight is going on right next to you so if this had happened when everything was silent or not so noisy I would have heard her before she could even shoot. I also have a surround sound headset that is still serving me well and my hearing is pretty good.

I understand now what the situation was like I think, in a team fight you were shot from behind she boosted up above you and then drifted foward.

Were you unable to hear her jetpack boost up? Or is your sensitivity too low? I would think if you heard the boost you should snap upwards and spot her.

I still don’t agree with you soley on the basis that the fov has never hindered me. I dont mean to offend you in any way and I am honestly only trying to understand your point of view, not to be a jerk and start and argument, I hope you understand.
