“Give me a DPS slot or I throw”
Flex players are not as good as they think they are at multiple roles and 2-2-2 showed that with role based SR. Role based SR is the BEST aspect of 2-2-2 and gutting it is insane.
nothing to fix, 222 is perfect…
you seem to have a problem with picking anything else but DPS, thats your problem that needs fixing.
yo this silver player says forced 222 is healthy for the game and all its players. turns out the only problem is too many people queuing for dps ahahaha
I don’t see how this would fix DPS queue times.
I didn’t say it was good. Just that it would a far simpler way to decrease queue times.

But seriously, the flex role will become this pivotal role in the game where you win because the flex player is either ; more flexible than the enemies flex player, or better at the role you actually need them to play.
As for the toxicity side of things, think DPS scapegoating levels of toxicity directed towards people playing this role, then multiply that.
You forgot one major problem, the fact that this community is 70% composed of dps players and most of them want to go pew pew with their best dps instead of flexing.
Ok, now I’m curious about tank and support percentages.
These are just wild percentages, but when you have to wait 1 minute to play tank and 2 to play supports but 10 minutes up to 15 till 20 there’s a real problem.
I made a slightly different suggestion on another thread. Have the same roles but everyone has to select 2 roles to queue for. In-game the selection is flexible with a minimum of 1 per role and maximum of 3. You can choose within the roles you queued for. The matchmaker would select a spread across the roles. In-game people could switch roles as long as they stay with min 1, max 3 per role. Pressing H deselects you from your current hero to make it easier to swap around within the team.
Thank you to everyone who has replied!
You all have brought up good points. I would like to address some of them:
I actually do agree with you here to an extent. The playerbase is still relatively healthy at this point, so splitting Quick Play or Competitive is fine for now. I’m just not sure if that will continue to be true in the future.
This is another good point. 1-2-2-1 would sacrifice some consistency for more variety. While preferences will differ from player to player, I feel that 1-2-2-1 would be a better balance.
1-2-2-1 forces 2 damage dealers at a minimum, which makes GOATS impossible.
There needs to be damage dealers to avoid GOATS.
I know other posters already addressed this, but some players only want to play a certain role, so this would not work. I did initially consider this, though.
If there is a “one best hero” for any role, I would argue that is more of a hero balancing issue, not a role-queue issue.
The flex role would have to have its own, separate skill rating if the current ranking system were to be kept.
These are all possible. I’m sure that Blizzard has been keeping an eye on Competitive Open Queue. From that, they should be able to find out how balanced flex play is.
Agreed. Ultimately, I don’t expect any big changes to happen until Overwatch 2’s release at the earliest.
How really? The numbers we got last time for a day was 6.9% play QPC. Barley higher than MH. And nowhere near regular. Majority of tanks will not play QPC. So you don’t lose them. And if more DPS go to QPC. That helps them.
2-2-2 makes flex players worse. I was high-gold (I know, nothing special) for the last few seasons, then with role queue I placed mid-bronze in everything.
Turns out actually playing the game and getting into a flow makes me play better DPS, not waiting 20 minutes between matches with boring placeholder game modes.
Comp classic I placed in Plat.
2-2-2 was a disaster and the devs finally noticed.
My issue with ideas like this is I honestly find them to be worse than open queue. It’s open queue but saying “we REALLY don’t want goats to exist”. And like others said, flex becomes the most important role then by far. A good flex player would be able to play more or less anything, which would open up more possible team comps for that team. But with a bad flex player, you have less options. And I could see the role being taken up by a lot of dps players who just want to play dps, leading to 1-4-1, or maybe even 1-3-2. Tank mains would have NO use for it, because we have fast queues. It would technically allow for more creative comps, but more teams would get screwed over.
So that means in a more organized environment, you do worse. It sounds like you just were able to take advantage of bad teams and people playing poorly. 2/2/2 makes everyone better at their role, because you queued for THAT role. So someone who queues and waits to play tank, will be at least DECENT at tank, because they wanted to play it. Same with DPS and supports. Comp classic (and old comp) were chaos environments that, while fun for many, had very little actual teamwork and synergy most of the time, especially in a solo-queue environment.
Also, the devs aren’t gonna change 2/2/2 anytime soon: open queue is up there to siphon DPS players away from the main mode. It’s not because they’re bringing it back as the main mode, it’s to help the main mode function better.
So 1/4/1 every game, eh? If we have people playing DPS Roadhog every game to avoid long DPS queues, what would stop them from just picking DPS as flex and ignoring their team?
If by “take advantage” you mean “play more often, with more fun, win or lose,” then sure. Forcing myself to play unfun 2-2-2 punctuated with long queues of boredom was not an advantageous use of my time.
EXACLY!!! With the Echo release they had the BEST opportunity to launch the flex roles. They even said live that Echo is for flexible players! They gave her a title by themselfs!!
So playing less makes you 2 ranks worse at the game? Being bored makes you 2 ranks worse at the game? And suddenly, going back to chaos queue, you’re up one rank. Dude, it’s the chaos that you work well in. In less coordinated environments, some people can play better into that. Others can’t. You clearly are the former, but that doesn’t mean that 2/2/2 is a disaster. Your rank fell in 2/2/2 comp, so just play open comp.
