This game is not a moba!

Genji is fun, but I suck at him. lol. I was Orisa, ana, junkrat in OW1, now I’m going SOLELY support in OW2 so that I can help there at least be SOME people that play support. Trying to learn all of them so I can be helpful in any situation. so far, ana/moira/brig/bap are in my repertoire.

Relating Bomberman to MOBAs because it takes place in an arena is like relating it to a battle royale because the arena happens to shrink. MOBAs didn’t start with the likes of Bomberman, they started with the likes of Herzog Zwei and Future Cop.

Conversely, a shooter doesn’t become not a shooter just because some of the weapons or characters involved use melee weapons. Nor does it stop being a shooter just because the game is focused on objective gameplay. Splatoon is a good example of this. Actual hybrid shooter/strategy games exist in the form of stuff like Wulfram 2, and shooter/MOBA hybrids exist in the form of battleborn. OW is neither of those things.

Let’s be real here, OW was only ever called a MOBA because of its adjacency to Battleborn (to which I think we can all agree it was falsely compared), not because of its actual gameplay features.

What would you call the difference between Valorant and CounterStrike?

MOBA originated from custom maps in SC and War3, both RTS. Does Overwatch look anything like RTS?

Calling Overwatch a MOBA is is non-sensical. There’s no skills unique to MOBA that would serve you well in this game.

But if you have FPS skills, you can play many aim-based heroes relatively well that a MOBA player could not. You would have better skill in movement that MOBA players do not have. You would have better positioning skills that MOBA players do not have.

On the other hand, there’s no hero in this game that a MOBA player could play that an FPS player could not. Movement skills in MOBA do not help you here. Positioning skills in MOBA do not help you here.

Calling Overwatch a MOBA is is non-sensical.

Its called a hybrid, and i would appreciate it if they stopped killing off the moba half of overwatch.
I don’t wanna play League of Legends

The statement is about what moba is, not what folks thinks it is. Just because your game have elements of it doesn’t mean that should be defined by it.

Like you mentioned, bomberman didn’t started moba, but had multiplayer battle arena on one of his modes.

Similarly to quake arena and unreal tournament.

Some folks say that arena based games started from bomberman. While arena concept is old as much humanity started to fight in a ordered manner through some kind of rulings in battles.

Shooters are only shooters if and only if each core concept is reliant on shooting stuff. Which on overwatch’s case stopped to be true due brig. Just because you have the ability to do melee attack you still preserve the ability to shoot even if you don’t have ammo, if you get the ammo you could shoot.

While on overwatch, if you pick brig you can’t shoot. Which is why they changed, not me, they. From “team based action hero shooter game” to “team based hero game” and recently after the overwatch2 release they cut the hero wording. Stating simply “team based action game”

Is fine having elements that relies on other things, which they always did. The problem is when your core concept isn’t true for all things. You have a weapon that can shoot, you can use it or not, your character has that ability to do it either you do or not. Brig doesn’t give you that, which is why isn’t a shooter anymore.

Let’s be real here. Overwatch never was MOBA, doesn’t matter what game you try to compare. Similarly never was FPS either. While you can say that overwatch in the past was a shooter game, today isn’t.

Doesn’t change those facts, tho:
Overwatch has moba elements
Overwatch has fps elements
Overwatch has third person elements

While they can shift the game towards whatever direction they want, like they already did several times. Having elements of something doesn’t make that thing be something. The game has those elements due it’s core being action game, that’s why by example we have 3rd person perspectives in some abilities and actions. Similarly to having moba oriented modes like push and control. While at same time we often shoot stuff and play in 1st person.

Doesn’t matter of what aspect we try to handpick. Those are things, that unless they’re removed from the game, are truths. Most of the 3rd person elements are for generate the action feeling of cinematographic scenes. Which they enabled different ways to play by it. That’s why OW never was MOBA or FPS to begin with. While project titan was and maybe ow2 in the future if they change the game enough could be one of those things.

So, at end of the day, OW is a “team based action game” with elements of several things, including moba and shooters (on some variants, like 1st and 3rd person).

Folks want to call things, things that often aren’t what they’re or simply call something based on a few parts of it.

Smartphones are amalgamation of features linked to a phone, similarly to smartwatches linked to a watch. Some folks would call it a phone or a watch, they would be wrong if your device smart feature is disabled for whatever reason(like a bootloader issue or a broken screen) and the device not being able to make calls or show the time.

That’s why, smartphone and phones are different and should be differentiated even if smartphones often have all features of a phone. Going even further mentioning cellphones in the mix.

Overwatch is an amalgamation like that, which is covered by “team based action game”. Saying that it is something else is wrong due not always being a truthful statement even if most of the time could it be.

Is really common folks call stuff by it’s “parts” or “elements” doesn’t make those folks right if that “stuff” not always happen to begin with.

So, while I understand the missconception about folks calling it “moba” is also a missconception folks call it “shooter”. Because both cases aren’t always true to begin with. That’s why, repeating myself for several times already is a “team based action game” at end of the day. What will be in the future we actually don’t know.

Huh! Now that you mention it. Its totally a 1st person moba.

No. It actually was Blizz’s attempt to rip off TF2.

RPG based. Role Playing Game.
Character have roles, defined by the abilities they use. Not a MOBA at all.

And yet here we are, look at the most upvoted comment.
Its like people like being in denial and bashing their head against a wall. Then Devs come and make changes that are clearly oriented towards an FPS and say “This was always an FPS first and thats our direction” and some players : [Surprised Pikachu face]
