Why are y’all acting like Activision isn’t a billion-dollar company?
Why spend your billions when you can get someone to spend theirs?
because if blizz is gonna start spending all this money and then loses most of it because they flub up in some way, its mostly gonna show some ineptitude on someone’s part.
They can easily make it back up.
but someone will get in trouble.
Forcing eSports so desperately only made it 100% certain OWL will fail. It’s a matter of time. So much drama and controversy, from small things like XQC flipping the bird, to big things like a player preying on underage girls. The low morale of these boys, Shanghai Dragons especially. Let’s not forget Effect is posting depressed suicidal thoughts on his Twitter.
The view-count for OWL has been steadily dropping. You know they’re desperate for views when they have to auto-play the livestream RIGHT onto the Battle.net app itself. Add in the negative reception to the news that Stage 4 won’t be current patch, and I can already see view numbers plummeting even more.
And just how many of those views are there JUST for OWL tokens?
OWL was a mistake, and I really hope they learn not to shove eSports so early into a game’s life like this. Overwatch is far from eSports ready. Characters are receiving MAJOR reworks that they might as well be a new hero. Some heroes are either 100% viable or a complete troll pick, with no middle ground, depending on the meta.
OWL was doomed to fail the day it was announced. Which is a shame. If they were just a bit more patient, and allowed a Competitive/eSport scene to develop naturally, with in-game tools such as guilds to help people build their own teams, OWL might have been a success.
Why developers insist on forcing the e-sports scene is beyond me. Every successful e-sport game got there naturally because the game play itself was fun, balanced, and people enjoyed watching it. The innate competitive nature of players will cause it to rise to e-sport potential if the drive is there.
Forcing e-sports is just the fastest way to destroy a game. No, don’t balance for top play, you don’t balance for middling play, and you don’t balance for bad play.
You balance for fun play.
If they flub it up.
Does anyone have access to the revenue they get from ticket sales, merch, Twitch deals, sponsorships, etc.?
No the league minimum is a 50k per player with a 1year guarantee. Some like sinatraa are said to be making 150k. These are all big money moves based off direct viewers in the prime demographic advertisers love. I’m sure teams get a taste of merc sales and so on.
I’ve not really done much digging into just how the money is made/moved around in esports.
I know ATVI stock has gone from 34ish to 71ish with in the launch of Overwatch.
I don’t really get how anyone thinks the OWL is flopping when nothing, I mean nothing about the numbers lines up with that prediction or projection. We should all fail so hard in life as the OWL is doing right now. It’s printing money, for everyone. Now will that keep going for the next 5+ years, I have no idea.
nope but considering the game is flubbing up already, not to mention the long list of problems which will honestly hinder the game in the future kind of like some dog on a leash running around trees and then when he runs out of leash he realizes he cant go forward anymore.
Its essentially gonna be like that.
but yeah blizz has a long list of problems to fix in order for the game to get back into balanced. And then pushed into “dang this is a gud game.”
But blizz sees the game as “gud” and “only brigitte is the problem right now” and they dont really know how to fix her, (give her a gun or some form of constant ranged attacks).
then yep, blizz is spending like 3.6 million or more on players this year.
they’re probably getting most of it back through all those sponsers and stuff, plus ads.
probably.
Literally every other type of physical sport has identical capabilities and rules on each team.
Football, Soccer and BasketBall don’t have a pick and ban system either.
By this logic cs:go shouldn’t be an e-sport either because both teams just use the same guns over and over again… right?
the NFL doesn’t pay the player’s the teams do. same thing here. Owners are free to sign $$$ level players for more money or $ level player at the league minimum level. The only thing blizzard does is set the team cap at I think 12 players and also enforced a trade deadline. Yet other wise team can sell players off, trade players etc.
Blizzard made their money off the front end with the franchise fees, team buy in and early promotion deals, plus merc of course. The money they are out is in the production/promotional side of the OWL along with whatever work is done for the game itself.
Stages 1 through 3 proved this to be completely false.
“Man football isnt a sport, both sides always have 11 dudes!”
i mean like a lot of people just said otherwise so idk.
This sounds smarter tbh.
I’m not easily convinced of things that are only based on anecdotal evidence.
Is Overwatch courting the same enthusiasm and numbers during the honeymoon phase? Most likely not. Is it in danger of dying? I highly doubt it.
These forums, like most others based around a game franchise, are self-sustaining echo chambers of bottomless negativity all done without any numbers to back anything up.
We have absolutely no data on player numbers, revenue from the franchise (not just the game itself), or financial trends in the wake of related scandals. We’re completely blind here.
But everyone around me is sticking the fork in the game.
I am not against the idea that Overwatch is dying nor have any real stake in its survival. I just have no reason to believe the assertion of a subsection of a subsection of the overall userbase that the game is in a precarious spot.
In short, y’all need to calm the eff down.
Addig more heroes mostly just made balance worse, not better.
It would prevent metas where only 6-7 heroes are viable, cause that’s incredibly boring after a while.
You don’t want an esport to be boring
Lieutenant Tom Paris here gets it.
No it wouldn’t.
That never happened before.
It would increase the number of useless heroes if anything.
Um… It did happen? Early stage OWL was the same core dive characters with a few variations based on the maps lol.
Having more heroes allows more interactions to take place that would help make the meta more diverse. Counterpicking becomes even better with more heroes in the roster.
I mean the only proof you’ll get of overwatch dying is when blizzard starts making overwatch 2.
They’re never gonna say “Yeah the game is dying guise”.
They didnt do it for wow when the player base was steadily falling off for several years.
They did for like two measurements then stopped when they realized its just gonna keep doing down.
They’re never gonna show weakness so this is honestly the best you’re gonna get in ascertaining some realm of possible truth to this.
tbh, the fork was long in the game.
ever since doomfist came out tbh.
cus thats when blizz outright killed hog to make room for doomfist. This honestly shows their balancing at work. instead of going "maybe we should redesign this character so he cant get instantly shut down by this character (and disregard future counters) but rather just kick a very popular character to the curb and just use the pleb excuse of “he wasnt fun” and “he flanked too much”, which his nerfs outright DO NOT EVEN INDICATE BLIZZARD WAS LOOKING AT HIM FLANKING.
The nerfs indicate something completely different, if they cared about him flanking, they’d nerf his walking speed and make him sound louder but instead we got a spammy roadhog with an escape ability, that sounds like the complete opposite to a character that was supposed to be denied flank capability.
