A note for everyone here: I am on the autism spectrum and I’ll always be very open about it. I point out things that others miss. People like me are, in my honest opinion, valid and valuable. I want to help Overwatch get better in any way possible. Thanks.
Please just look at this. The difference is night and day, I assure you. Look at the level of detail that was used here in these pre-match banter lines - let’s start here with voice lines for Sombra.
- Hah, let’s get started. Got a lot of systems that need hacking.
- Hm… I think I can make this worth my time.
- I’m hoping for an easy mission. Don’t make this harder than it needs to be.
- Genial. Otro trabajo aburrido.
- Anyone want drinks? They’re on Max’s tab! *laughs* (on Circuit Royal)
- I don’t… want to stick around here. Something in the air makes my eyes water… (on Eichenwalde; refers to Sombra’s traumatic orphan experiences from the Omnic Crisis)
- You guys ever drink this Don Rumbotico? Euch… the old stuff was way better. (on Havana)
- Ay, these horror flicks. Can’t believe they’re making another Rise of the Zomnics. *gasp* Wait… in 5D?! (on Hollywood)
- What news on the Rrrrrrialto! *coughs* Sorry. (on Rialto; pop-culture reference)
- Looks like Gibraltar’s back online… with lots of new intel to share. (on Watchpoint: Gibraltar)
Now… look here. Look here, I tell you. This is what Hazard can say in the same situation. Look at this. Is it AI? It is AI. Why? It’s disturbingly similar, monotonous, everything.
- Aim for your best out there, pals!
- Check out these new 'gradies. Touch-up’s work. Outdid herself again!
- Enough standin’ around!
- It’s looking like a revolution.
- Let’s gaun then!
- Let’s kick things off already!
- Let’s make the piper pay.
- Let’s take out the rubbish.
- Look around you. The system’s not working. High time to try something new.
- No holdin’ back, you hear me?
- They arenae ready for me.
- Think they can take us? Chancers.
- Time to taste my metal.
- Was born ready for this.
- Whatever happens out there, stay together.
- You all best stick with me out there.
- Clear skies? I’ll change that. (on any map during morning)
- These Oasis fools have got to learn. They cannae keep people down forever. (on Oasis)
- *(laughs)* Tore this place up. (on Oasis)
Now, really, just look at that above. There’s tons of generic lines, all with almost identical moods/feelings and in fact, the lengths of each one is disturbingly similar. And trust me, I know it: Team 4’s using AI to generate voice lines. And guess what? Really, it doesn’t work. It just doesn’t work. We haven’t reached the AGI phase yet, and AI simply doesn’t understand how to do this kind of stuff. They don’t know lore like us, not like the devs themselves.
Can I just please see if the team can hear me out? I really need to stress this: don’t use artificial intelligence to write for you. They won’t make the brief. Everyone in the original OW2 launch, plus Ramattra and Lifeweaver, I know they got real humans writing up what they say, because that all came in before AI had their massive boom. Once Illari was released, the level of voice line writing had sharply declined, and I know that AI is to blame.
I’m not mad, I’m just giving an important advisory, and it will work out better in the end if this is taken on. Just don’t use AI. Spend time with real people that love the craft and know the lore to heart. An AI doesn’t have the capability. Who agrees with me?
