This may have gone under the radar for some, but theres no way in hell i’m letting this sneak by.
This was taken directly from the CEO of Activision Blizzard, from an investors call asking about questions (And this info is sourced from Wyomings thread). They asked if Overwatch is going to become F2P, but instead dropped this bombshell.
"On the free-to-play part of your question in particular, obviously the most proven platform is mobile. So as we increasingly bring Activision and Blizzard IP to the mobile space, you will see us deploy more free-to-play models."
Do you guys not have brains?
Who in their right mind thought this was a good idea? Have you not seen the response Diablo immortal got? You’re planning to make more of these?
Are you serious?

mobile games make tons of money

and if it makes them money and raises their stock value…i guess bad for them?
Yes, but Blizzard is mostly known for making PC games. Investing development time into a platform that breaks away from PC to a much more insulting platform is just asking for long time fans to quit.
Diablo Immortal was a firm example of this, especially when all of the demo booths at Blizzcon were empty.
and, again, if it makes them a profit and raises their stock value?
not saying i like it, just stating the reason why a company like activision would do it.
we can just hope that diablo immortal flops like EA’s dungeon keeper mobile and they stick to “King” making their mobile games

You’re failing to see the point. What could have been a PC game that fans awaited for is now locked to mobile.
I can almost gurantee you Immortal is going to flop, unless its Chinese market mindlessly buys into it.
This is a slap in the face, especially after they had just released 800 employees.
Diablo Immortal got a bad response because of bad PR, not because people aren’t interested in the game. Don’t be fooled by the lash back at BlizzCon, Diablo Immortal is going to become very popular. Maybe not for the PC player, but there are plenty of mobile players looking for a high quality game like this.
Lets be honest here, their target market isn’t us. That’s why Diablo Immortal is being developed by NetEase. Their target market is China. They don’t care if it bombs here, it’s gonna be huge in China, F2P mobile games with P2W gambling mechanics is huge there, almost cultural, which will make them plenty of money.
You people catch up realy slow to news from last blizzcon.
In Orisa’s voice: I have a bad feeling about this.

Mobile makes up 51% of the “gaming” space being the most profitable (while also being SIGNIFICANTLY CHEAPER to develop), its been growing year on year.
2017 it was 41% mobile.
Last year:
We may not like it (or even understand why, its truly baffling), but that is where the $$$ is.
Blizzard are just hoping to get a piece of that pie.

That’s the issue; game companies/investors love to walk into the same costly traps over and over again.
This is something like the 4th-5th time they’ve claimed phones were the future? On top of that I recall 10 years(?) ago when they said Facebook gaming was the future.
