I type in chat all the time, still no warning or mute.
I expect it’s how you’re talking that’s getting you reported.
lol Reportwatch?
What’s next? Report2win?
Did we get ourselves into a… report meta? (How do you nerf that??)
With topics like these, it sounds like Overwatch really is getting weirder by the day!
I always recommend disabling chat in this game. The only outcome of using it is eventual ban thanks to fully automated reports system.
Seriously, you don’t need chat. You will forget that it exists in a few days. You have pings and canned messages, use them.
Thats what happens when you make an automated system that bans people for multiple reports.
How many people got falsely banned because of these abusive reports just because of snowflakes, and how blizzard tries to turn the game into a kindergarden safe place.
I play a lot of other games where people wouldnt be banned for WAY WORSE things they could say in chat and its still “safer” than here lmao.
Their in-game code of conduct and their posting about their systems (Defense Matrix). They track false reporting to reduce and punish the ones abusing the system.
If you do constantly you would be penalized in some way.
Is their words on that regard, just relying it. What actions I sincerely don’t know but they mentioned
https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/42673
Behavior
Behavior that intentionally detracts from others’ enjoyment (such as griefing, throwing, feeding, etc.) is unacceptable. We expect our players to treat each other with respect and promote an enjoyable environment. Acceptable behavior is determined by player reports and Blizzard’s decision, and violating these guidelines will result in account and gameplay restrictions.
While we encourage you to report players that are behaving in a disrespectful manner, falsely reporting another player with the sole intent of restricting their gameplay is also unacceptable and will result in penalties to your account.
If you’re unsure if your actions violate this code of conduct, reconsider them. We reserve the right to restrict offending accounts as much as necessary to keep Blizzard games a fun experience for all players.
From the source it links to it:

So, while they don’t detail what kind of punishment, they effectively monitor false reporting. If also I remember correctly in one of their videos they also mention about false reporting, although can’t remember what video.
I never did this because… I actually enjoy interacting with people, and the rare times Ive actually received compliments often makes my day, week, or more as I remember the person that actually bothered to be positive towards me. I like making friends and sometimes you’ll find your luck in chat. Now yes, when people are malicious sometimes it bothers me but that’s also why we have block and report, that’s the 2 sided blade I accept for some positive interaction.
welp I report a lot of smurfs and cheaters from season 6/7 ( prob not all of them are but i can’t distinguish top player from cheater so that one left for the system to decide)
no suspensions, no emails, no endorsment change…nothing, only casual suffering from 10L - 2W and so on in OQ QP but that is as QP now is
even as i checked soft throwing is also ok now…or people just don’t actually care
Yes reportwatch sounds interesting. I think there should even be a chance to remove you from the current active game if you get reported a couple times.
That’s not a false reporting or abusing it. Doing on purpose several times in a row or in a very short time frame is.
If you suspect of something, you should report it. If you report on purpose to target specific folks, that’s a different matter. Don’t mistake legitmate concern with chronical reporting or
Even if you report a lot, but some or most of them had some “abnormal” iteration with you isn’t false reporting. Is a trend that something is fishy and they can use it to track. If you do it every match targeting specific person or doing at random and stacking too much non-plausible reports that’s a different matter.
If you encounter 1 cheater(different or not) in 10 matches in a row, you should report those 10. Is not abusing if you suspect of something and most of those reports are legitimate.
If your purpose wasn’t to false report, is not a problem. Repetitive behavior is what creates problems and reporting system helps to track that.
it’s really simple, you make someone mad, they want to talk trash on you, but they can’t so instead they report you
Sometines it’s 10 reports per day, and I play each day… i can send those cheater reports and only 1 out of 10 will be legitimate each time, so are those false? for system - yes, but still they don’t do anything for that if so
Few times it was annoying sombra/doom/ball smurfs 5 games in a row ( yeah that happens) so i saw that they were kicked midgame on 4-5th report
Wonder if those were cheaters or smurfs, or both
Sometimes on bad days I’m tired of facing the same 4-5 stack against me as solo player so as there is no avoid list for enemies i just report them… how else I can not be matched against them?
Was your intention to restrict them from playing or simply suspicion of it? If there’s no intent aside of being suspicious wouldn’t be. Is not false if you suspect of it, the report is for them to look into it, but also create a profile of it.
Like measuring what kind of softwares they’re running and compare with their data on other reported players following similar patterns or using similar softwares.
Smurfing is a bit complicated, but in general they’re messing up the experience from others but at same time blizzard not exactly prevent them to create another accounts, aside the phone requirement (sms) that I dunno if it is still in place on newer accounts.
Reporting doesn’t prevent you to be matched against them. This is not okay to report just because you spent your avoids. Those are false you shouldn’t be doing those, tho.
you can avoid one of them, making you avoid the 4-man stack on your side, but on the other side avoid and neither report do a thing.
Forgot to address this part, previously
Someone has been naughty.
Real been disabled twice already
Doubt anyone is getting ‘reported’ for losing unless they said something toxic or were deliberately trolling/throwing.
You’re making a mountain out of an anthill.
That more World of Warcraft actually.
With people who understood how to abuse the automated processing system of report for their own benefit.
Let’s pray this doesn’t happen in Overwatch.
Not gonna lie, I report constantly for people being jerkbags, even if it’s not directed toward me. Why? Because it takes two seconds and might prevent a few people from having toxic teammates.
I honestly think people miss the point of comms. It’s not for telling your Widow to “Swap because you’re a**,” as much as you might think so. Chat has become so toxic, the idea of just sharing information to help your team is a foreign concept. “Sombra behind,” or “Mei used Ice Block,” is way more likely to help your team win than “GG tank diff”. So, yeah. I report and I’ll keep reporting because if you can’t say something helpful, saying nothing is free.
This is not true. Blizzard isn’t going to spend their time making sure they got the right person. They just base it on the number of reports you get within a certain period of time. OP isn’t wrong just talking in this game gets you reported.
I report people who are friendly all the time because we all know they are fishing for commendations. Never had anything happen to me.
Bro you are replying to everyone about the report system like you KNOW for sure. You’re wrong, I report people for all kinds of goody stuff all the time and I’ve never been actioned against for it. Stop drinking the kool-aid… Blizzard is a company who just wants your money they aren’t your friends.
