Realistically though, when does that kick ever come into use and it was actually worth using? most of the time, you are getting killed by ranged characters who are not going to be in close-range to even use it.
Yet still dies fairly easily, especially in high ranks.
That’s why I call it a fallacy as these were all OW1 problems.
I refused to play Zen/Ana/Bap nearly all the time into OW1 specifically because flanker watch was incredibly rampant and having an extra tank or other CC methods hardly helped at all because tanks flanking were half the issue as well or people never picked the counters. ANother OW2 problem.
A support can’t kill a tank nearly at all and when you went and used your only defensive option to try to stop one tank another one can come back and just screwed you over just as easily. Oh, I just use Ana’s sleep dart to stop Winston. Good thing this Dva/Hammond came strolling by I don’t have sleep dart for at all. Or they overlap each other with barriers so I can’t do anything at all.
There is no peel to be had when your tanks are also playing flank watch against the enemy team. A roadhog going for random hooks on the side leaving you with no support.
With OW2 having one less tank you can CC or evade one tank and try to murder any 200hp heroes that come your way as support now. Going into OW2 Blizz already buffed several supports to be better which is why again I say this is a fallacy now. They already patched up a good idea of situations. I have so much more self agency on support now with the 1.5sec passive. I no longer am dependent upon my ally to heal me up if they just ignore my existence or are dead.
Support situation is quite fine especially considering RQ times. All the RQ times are half or more of what they were in OW1. So, again, I don’t know what more people want that wasn’t already a glaring problem from OW1.
If there’s one thing supports agree on, it’s that the expectation for them to do more was not accompanied by buffs that allow them to do more. You can’t say supports need to do more while not providing them with the tools to do more.
Personally, I completely disagree that the support playstlyle has to change. There is no real need for it. Sure Mercy and Brig could use buffs/reworks to make them fit better in the 5v5 environment, but all other supports are completely fine. Why fix something that is not broken?
I rather turn down the effectiveness of flankers and one-shots to make the experience better.
The main way for this would be to have a strong passive. Maybe permanently low HP generation for supports? Or something like a one shot protection at full health (that triggers once and then has a passive cooldown)? They have a ton of options what they could do.
Also don’t forget, it’s even worse for new players as they only have Moira/Lucio/Mercy so they’re unable to switch to heroes like Ana/Baptiste etc if needed lol
I really dislike hero locks and IMO every single hero should be available day 1, because it’s whack how someone has to spend forever unlocking heroes
The way I see it, there’s just too much hypermobility in the game. This wasn’t as big of a problem in OW1 because off tank could focus on peeling vs flanks while main tank creates space.
Blizzard needs to slow the game down by removing any movement speed passives that are still in the game and reduce distance travelled on movement cooldowns.
Queue times prove the contrary.
Also, supports are not dps that can heal. Supports specialise in healing and assisting their team via utility. Dps specialise in eliminating opponents.
