The way that blizzard uses ow1 nostalgia

with their fomo ow classic returning event just feels super scummy to me.
kind of like a “dont you guys have phones” situation.

they notice ppl want ow classic or ow1 in general and use that to their supposed advantage. given how ow2 was gutted and how we where lied to for years and how no matter how hard we try, we wont get ow1 back in its entirety, this is just a top notch scumbag move.

ofc you could say “heeey it better than nothing” to which i say really? this just means they have even more stuff to fill the void between major content. because when nothing really happens you can always reconstruct an old ow1 patch.

I dunno if I’d describe the OW Classic mode as nostalgia.

For us OG players, it feels more like PTSD.

It’s mostly for new players to experience what we’ve referenced.

i mean dont get me wrong: i think ow classic for og players is entirely pointless. i think its insanely out of touch to even think about bringing select patches back in such a way. i dont feel much nostalgia towards specific patches. the good thing about patches is that eventually even the dumbest patch is over.

but the entire idea just rubs me the wrong way. they are essentially trying to create engagement with old content. if you like the patch youre likely saying “man can we have this permanently in the arcade”
if you dont like it you might be asking: “are they picking this patch to show us how bad ow1 used to be and how great its supposedly now?” like some kind of backhanded reality check akin to “you think you want that but you dont want that”

and both directions have nothing positive. both ways i feel this is a slap in the face of the playerbase. the opposite of taking the players seriously.

like, if you where serious about ow classic you would not start with arguably 2 of the lowest points in ow history:

  1. the 1.0 patch which was still very clunky and frustrating, with some ehroes being insane and others, like dva feeling like a turd to play. or lucio who basically could almost not effectively wallride at all. mind you that thats all we knew back then and ofc we where hyped and we had fun.

  2. moth meta, which was essentially blizzards failed attempt at a major rework, instantly overshooting and making mercy disgustingly strong, even stronger than ever before.

Hm I liked classic but you’re kind of right. Afaik one of the future patches is brig release which is another low point. So
