The ranked system is forcing me to smurf

I’ve been away from this game for 8 months but recently decided to scratch the OW itch using an alt account. When I originally created the alt account, I was handicapping myself to learn, but since coming back, I have played normally and casually, unlocking comp with a 64% overall winrate in quick play (75% overall winrate since I came back). Since I left at the end of season 8, I decided to try comp out, and well…

The problem is that the ranked system is putting my roles too low. Using support, the worst offender, as an example, my first few placement games were in bronze 5, and I was placed bronze 3 78% at the end of placements. Granted, I went 6-4 in placements, but it’s bronze, so the losses were due to bronze players doing bronze things.

My record since placements is 11-1 (so 17-5 overall), and I have moved to just bronze 1 9%. My first win after placements gave me just 10% (victory + calibration), and I got 16% (victory + winning trend), the most so far, from my last win. The one loss was only -12%, but shouldn’t I be moving up more with a 77% overall support winrate and a 91.67% winrate since placements?

For reference, I was at least diamond on support before leaving the game, and while I am not claiming I am playing at that level now, the current situation is fair to no one. I am demolishing these bronze players, but I don’t want to be doing that to them. I don’t want to be smurfing and giving these poor bronze players a hard time, but the ranked system refuses to move me up faster. What is going on?

Edit on Oct 26: based on my calculations, I actually placed at B3 78% and hit 88% after my first post-placement win, so I changed the % in the 2nd paragraph.

do what you gotta do - but DON’T feed blizzards wallet by buying cr*p on multiple accounts or you are just proving them right that the system is working as intended.

I think I didn’t understand, you’re getting too low increase/decrease on your bronze smurf account although you’re on a winning train?

Yes. I figured I would be moving up at least 20% per win, especially since it is a new account to comp (because what is the point of the calibration modifier if it is not pushing me to where I should be?). Instead I started by going up just +10% from my first game (a win) after placements, and have slowly seen it increase to a whopping +16%. I am 17-5 on support, a 77.27% winrate.

For example, my last 7 matches’ results:

  1. (oldest) Win: +14% to bronze 2 49%; calibration, winning trend, and victory positive modifiers
  2. Win: +14% to bronze 2 63%; same modifiers as previous
  3. Loss: -12% to bronze 2 51%; defeat and calibration negative modifiers
  4. Win: +13% to bronze 2 64%; victory positive modifier
  5. Win: +14% to bronze 2 78%; victory and winning trend positive modifiers
  6. Win: +15% to bronze 2 93%; same modifiers as previous
  7. Win: +16% to bronze 1 9%; same modifiers as previous

I had, and have, zero intention to smurf; I was very surprised (and unhappy) to find my first placement matches were in bronze 5. I just wanted to see where I would place and see what comp is like now after being away for 8 months. But because the system started me so low and is moving me so little, I am forced by the system to be a smurf.

Game is unfortunately broken. Imagine 8yrs and a sequel of a game but zero stat or rank resets besides a visual icon that gets lowered.

Now throw in a system that uses mmr, sbmm, ebmm, and visual tiers to determine your matches. All the while your skill doesnt effect going up or down, and here we are.

Im a solid diamond player, made a new account. Won 7 lost 3 placements, have a 7kd and it placed me silver. Im now at a 90% winrate and massively stomping my way up. Unlosable games, one match I stopped playing for an entire half and my team won the 4v5. This whole time im not gaining anymore xp.

Meanwhile I have other accounts rolling in higher ranks and some getting rolled in lower ranks.

The only other role/mode I’ve played is tank, and the first placement game or two was silver 5. My quick play tank win rates were 70-80% to unlock comp, and I was comfortably master on tank before I left. I ended up being placed low gold, but I’m still only moving up 20-25% per win. If this was Overwatch 1, I would’ve gained 50-150 SR with my early wins. It’s so strange.

Its all just to increase grind and keep people at the bell curve. Its so annoying

They lowered all of the rank +/- modifiers in a recent season. The effect of which is to keep ppl in their current tier as much as possible. Ranking up is twice the grind it used to be. It’s almost like this game is run by ppl that don’t ever play video games.

No you lost cuz of you.

youre not a smurf. get good

Did they? I left at the end of Season 8, so I’ve never experienced the modifiers.

I hope both of you can find something meaningful to do with your life other than waste it trolling a message board. Have a good night.

Yep, it was either this season or the one before. I only play OW intermittently, so i’m not the best to give time tables. I was pretty surprised when I saw the change. It just seemed to me like another way to keep the tiers stagnant. I’m convinced OW isn’t about having fun anymore, it’s ruled by metrics and algorithms. The devs are just here on staff to do what the metrics tell them to do.

Bronze takes significantly longer to climb in because the sr range in it bigger. As soon as you hit Silver you should have normal gains

That might be it. I’ve always figured every division in bronze was 100 SR (like the divisions for other ranks) except for bronze 5, which would cover the rest of the range. However, I don’t know if there is anything to support that idea I had.

Combine that with performance-based SR being long gone, and perhaps you get my issue.

you gotta grind or else how the game is going to survive

I get placed against smurfs all day every day so apparently I belong in low Gold. :man_shrugging:

Yes. I figured I would be moving up at least 20% per win, especially since it is a new account to strane… since I have that 20

Feels strange that you needed to create a smurf to get this % since I get it on my old original account untill last season (didn’t play the newest yet). Idk why your percentage is that low, maybe because it’s bronze rank? Like the lower rank you’re in lower percentage you gain/lose? Idk this is just wondering

unless u fix the ranking system im deleting the game and playig cs instead, when my whole team, (IN DIAMOND) pushes one after another, the whole other team. im starting too wonder what rank im playing. tank dies, genji thinks i can do it, ashe thinks is too, and the bap also thinks he can solo the team. im done. can you make the system so that when one if the stats are trash that they get deranked instant like a whole tier of rank. from diamond 1 too plat 1 INSTANT.

epic first post

Sayeon pointed out above that the SR range of bronze is bigger, and I hypothesized that the divisions are also. With the old system, all ranks but bronze and GM were 500 SR wide, with bronze being 0-1500 and GM 4,000-5,000. 5 divisions per rank would seemingly translate to 100 SR per division, but that may or may not be the case for bronze.

I’ll also mention that I got a bigger percentage gain for tank in gold. I only played a couple of games past placements, but the last game was +23%. So it may indeed be a bronze issue.

Why calibration is not moving me more, I can’t say. Perhaps the modifiers were nerfed as Zyzomys said.

My apologies, but I want to make sure I understand this sentence. You’re saying you get around 20% from wins on a more established account and that 20% is roughly a standard gain or loss, correct?

Well, I guess you’re going to play cs instead, because I don’t know how to fix it. :upside_down_face:
