The Hook is Useless

it breaks a lot if a movement ability is used. like a doom uppercut, mercy guardian angel. mccree roll. tracer blink.

and this happens in the wide open.

Blizzard seem more keen on just adding more heroes and skins instead of fixing the heroes the game had from the start.

That’s an SOE development tactic, ā€œWhy fix old bugs when you can cover them up with new ones and new content.ā€

Then they don’t have to go back and fix them.

Or are constantly trying to add content to please the ā€œso what’s newā€ people AND balancing old content to work with the new content as well as fix bugs. There is quite a bit of evidence that even if it’s not the character you WANT being worked on, old heroes are being balanced.

This is perfectly ok, the less instakill-y the better. The game needs way less one hit KO’s.

I would accept consistent damage over full kill damage. I’ve hooked and perfectly headshotted (it’s more in the neck but…) a widow and had her grapple away with a little over half life, For the investment and technical skill required to do that, she should be closer to death.

It’ll break even if no los break. Any sort of lateral movement from a hero breaks it. It’s very bugged right now.

Haven’t experienced that much breakage myself, but I don’t doubt there’s bugs. I think ANY lateral movement is a bit of an exaggeration though.

Sometimes pressing A or D is enough to make the hook completly null and void.

Of course it’s a slight exaggeration, I play a fair bit of hog and the hook seems to break over very small things. For example I tried to hook a Zen and the hook broke because he was near a wrecking ball mine. Not behind it and it wouldn’t have pulled it through him but I’m assuming that’s what broke it because that was the only thing around.

No its true it breaks for no reason in the wide open when some kind of movement ability interferes with it

I don’t like playing Road anymore because of his Hook issues and the fact that his damage is random I can’t deal with all that rng in a game it’s too much

Sad reality, to the best of my knowledge that WASNT a bug, and is hook working as intended.

Which obviously- isn’t very good.

For those that don’t know (not saying you, just an in general thing) - hook was changed so that it requires multiple LoS checks in order to complete the hook.

When you hook a target, multiple ā€œlinesā€ are drawn from hog, to the target- at various points AROUND the target- namely to the target itself, as well as to the ā€œsidesā€ of the target.

If your target is moving in a direction, the lines to the appropriate sides must also pass a LoS check. If they don’t- the hook
fails.

The ā€œlogicā€ behind this is that it helps prevent hooking targets who were JUST about to clear a corner- but get pulled back instead, because on the recipients ends they probably did clear the corner, and it feels terrible being hooked through walls.

Now to this widow video- I was not surprised to see where the widow was standing. Right by a corner.

Look what happens just as the hook is thrown- widow is AD spamming, just in the direction of the corner.

Which the hook then tries to LoS check- and fails because of the terrain

So yea. To the best of my knowledge from what I can see, not a bug- but working ā€œas intendedā€

But in a completely awful way. It’s oretty lame at times. Such as here.

Make the hook hitscan plz.

Your assumption is this is working as intended since we’ve never been told one way or another though. We’ve unfortunately never had acknowledgement that this is how it’s supposed to work or not. I’m going to go with bug since the majority of the game uses ā€œfavor the shooterā€ and this would go against that.
All my evidence of course is anecdotal but I can count the times I’ve seen it break 'for no reason" on one hand… and I’ve played hog for a while. THe only reason I stopped playing him as much was the damage he does has become incredibly , unreliably inconsistent , making him a poor choice for someone who depends on knowing that certain moves will have a certain damage tick (approximately). I need to know that Right-click to body, hook, left click to chest/neck and melee will almost kill someone or at least heavily damage them. Otherwise I might as well just try to get env kills all day and build up ult to push people off the point… both very situational needs.

I watched it and I’m sorry but the suggestions he makes are terrible.
I see the inconsistency with roadhog, but he actually wants Hook1.0 back, thats EXACTLY what he wants, he just talks very smoothly around it.

Hogs weapon into hitscan? Yeh, ok, I’d rather have that than the increase of dmg he suggests, because we had that kind of Hog already and it was one of the worst experiences ever. Getting oneshot EVERY TIME because actually thats all he was able to do - no thx.

Dont listen to that guy, he basically wants old hog back.

i don’t have trouble with HS as RH and getting kills esp with focus fire

not it shouldn’t be. they should keep it as is but fix LoS bugs. hitscan would be way too OP for such a good move.

Focus fire on a hooked target is nice, but still relies on your team paying a lot of attention. Ideally people would focus whatever poor shmuck you yanked in but lets be honest, with randoms it’s pretty rare. Hog should do a decent amount of damage for landing his full combo.

Where do you aim HS? I’ve found if even one pellet hits non-head hitbox the games system for crits does a weird sort of maybe/maybenot. It’s either all pellets are headshot or none are. I’ve bodyshotted people for instant kills and headshotted people for piddle.

The hook breaks for no reasons its really annoying since thats all he offers. His ult is bad, he suffers from all the stuns… he cant make space since every ability of him can get cancelled by stunning him. You can counter him too easily while he doesnt really bring much to the table. Considering the stun problematic, zarya doing better DMG better ultimate, roadhog still feeding so much… hes terrible to be played in ranked.

i had 3 games with randos and it worked great everytime I hooked someone they died before I could even finish the pull. when I pulled alone i even got headshots and kills. i rarely lose with a hook. heck even just pulling a brig away from my team or theirs have netted me seriously value.

it varies per hero for example when i hook a reaper for some reason aiming for his mask mouth thing (closer to chin) nets more me damage than aiming slightly higher or mid head. IDK why but practice again bots of every hero or even better have your friend help and have them tell you the exact damage your dealing with slight variations in location. the HB on some heroes really doesn’t match and for once genji isnt the worse offender lol.

small lag also could be a factor besides just wonky HB. it truly varies tho. sorry i cant give me of an answer
