The difference between a player and a main

The difference between someone who plays your hero and someone who mains them is sometimes insane to the point of being painfully noticable.

For example a mercy player will go for almost any and every rez known to man and will die multiple times in the process.

A mercy main knows exactly which rezes to straight up ignore.

What are some habits or playstyles you have that distinguishs you from being just a “player” on main your hero

Granted… Plat/diamond tank level here. Idk i havent played tank in comp yet since OW1

Hog 1v1s are always painfully noticable when the enemy doesn’t main Hog. Whoever hooks first dies first. They always go for it anyways though.

Hey, listen! It´s more like an impulse, rather than intention xD
Mercy is my “I don´t feel like putting effort today” kinda hero, where I go on autopilot and relax. I don´t have to aim, I am not afraid of flankers, etc…so me “turning off” like this causes silly ress in the process.
But I guess with 500 + hours on her, I can call my self main :woman_shrugging:
(even tho Mercy main is more of a slur here…)

Maining a hero just means you play them the most. It doesn’t necessarily mean you’re any good at them.

I’m a Lucio. I’ll die 8 times to a Widow and not swap.

edit, see above comment.

When I’m on tank or support I kinda hate seeing echo swap to hitscan when they have pharah. Echo is the superior flying hero so diff them lol.

I can’t believe you main a particular hero instead of another in a video game, how abhorrent.

…what?

I THOUGHT YOU WERE A SOMBRA main all this time!

lol I’ve one-tricked Lucio for the last 3+ years. If I play DPS, it’s usually Sombra

I was trying to make a joke about how people like to judge and treat others based on their mains but it was really bad

I was thinking that, but was not sure xD (I am bad at reading sarcasm in text)

Taking a step back and looking broader…I can tell if a person casually plays OW vs a seasoned this opponent will be troublesome by how they walk.

Walk through every hallway down the middle like a Chad vs hugging walls like scared mice.

Also ana main here. (In my opinion) Biggest signal to me is how comfortable they are taking hip shots at moving targets at mid distance. I think better ana players avoid aiming down sights when possible cuz those shots give your position away.

Edit 2: also I think a good way to tell if a support mains their char is how they react to dives. Good support mains will comfortably take the 1v1 against any non-tank. Those not as comfortable would rather run and not look back.

I know when it’s a good idea to frontline on Tracer. Most of my kills are finished with melees or outright one clips. I don’t engage with another Tracer until after they Recall to avoid them getting a lucky shot. I use Recall a lot more than a newer Tracer, but don’t waste it.

Also if you’re on comms with me, I know all of her voice lines and will literally say them with her in my awful British accent.

It’s because they’re playing Mercy. Tracer, Genji, Lucio, Ball, etc. Are fun to one trick.

Watching another Sombra rollout makes me cringe half of the time. That and when they hack every health pack or choose to duel in a terrible matchup.
