Yeah, regardless of what is ‘fun to play into’, the game needs more than two functional tanks for the fun and health of the tanking role.
Exactly - what’s “fun to play as” is more about what’s easiest to win against
As a tank player I can tell you that we are utterly tired of holding up a shield for DPS that doesn’t use it and when we lower the shield we find that we don’t have any healing because everybody wants to play Moira Lucio and DPS. It’s not because tanking isn’t fun. It’s that losing isn’t fun and having toxic teammates who want to blame everything on you when they never used you or protected you or stayed with you or followed you… I don’t even want to tank anymore.
Losing is fine sometimes if that means I get to play Winston more often. Many players at my rank seem to have forgotten how to deal with him outside of Reaper, so it evens out a little.
That’s because with all the tank nerfs and people insisting on nerfing Rein, nobody wants to play main tank. I’ve just now with this recent patch quit tanking. The only fun tanks left are the off-tanks but there’s no guarantee the other guy won’t want to pick off-tank too.
And before somebody comes to say that buffing tanks doesn’t make them more fun; it does. When you can land an accretion and it secures a kill, it feels infinitely more satisfying than landing it and having the enemy walk away. When you can press your buttons in response to the flow of battle, it’s a lot more fun than waiting for them to come back because their CDs got nerfed.
This is all on top of the fact that there’s so many heroes that aggravate tanks. Oh look there’s a Reaper shredding my team. Well I have no counter in my hero pool, so I guess we lose. Yeah, no thanks.

This is what happens when you continuously nerf every single tank until there is only one viable meta giant. And they wonder why no one plays tank.
Nobody wants to play exclusively reinhardt, Dva is my 2nd most played hero, I don’t play tank roles as Dva is in a bad spot and I have to go reinhardt or lose.
Tanks were nerfed for pro play which leaves most ladder players to play tanks with sub-pro skill with poor results. There ends up only being one main tank that sub-pro players can generally get away with when skill gets high enough, and that’s Rein.
The best off-tank for Rein is Zarya.
If they just did a few more minor buffs to Sigma he could probably make it to main tank again.
Orisa needs her shield cool down reduced or it’s hp increased slightly.
Problem then becomes double-barrier comps.
Any other tank it’s wrecked by Cc and knocks.
Make innate armor give CC / knock resistance at 1% per 10 armor with a cap at 50%.
Give Dva a 30% movement penalty when firing, increase her DM to 12m, and booster damage to 25.
Give Roadhog is off-tank aura with TaB from experimental.
Then give certain heroes bonus damage to barriers in key abilities that is based on a percentage of the max go of the barrier.
Now you have barrier-comp counters, you have more viable main tanks, and more viable off-tanks to pair with.
If all the tank players are in open que, then why ar2 there so many instalock no switch dps players? I’m pretty sure open que siphoned more dps players than tanks, few people are doing goats and those that are are the top 400 players in open q
Tank are so bad you want to have MORE of them on your team…that doesn’t make much sense.
Tanks are just boring and no one wants to play them.
That is why they are set up for 1 tank 3 dps and 1 healers. Cause they KNOW tanks and healers are less common. So they game is balanced to have less slots for those class on a team not MORE like Overwatch
You don’t see WoW setting up a raid to need 12 tank, 12 healers and 1 DPS for their raids
Support queue time matching dps —> blame GM and dps

they’re complaining about dps congestion like it’s something they can fix with the snap of their fingers
it’s a community/player problem
not a fundamental in-game problem, nor match making, or anything else problem
majority of players end up picking dps
literally as simple as that
1/3/1 = 60% DPS slots per game = Smart
2/2/2 = 33% DPS slots per game = Dumb
Well, it would help to actually make more balanced games in QP. And show us groups again.
I think if the game went 1-2-2 (with appropriate tank balancing) the game might possibly be in a much better place.

Nah spare me with that BS it was DPS and GM crying those crocodile tears about GOATS, then Orisa, then Sigma, now you’re looking like fools because turns out no one wants to play Rein/Zarya all day. Enjoy your queue times Hombre.
Tanks are in a terrible state right now.
It is not that they go to open queue like you say. Most of them (like me) has migrated to Support role. And there is a lot of reasons, but in my opinion the most important is that if you don’t play Rein-Zarya, your team go toxic over you. Lot’s of Hammond, Dva, Winston, even Sigma mains, prefer to play in QP and avoid competetive because this people. (proof: dps queue are better in qp)
There is still other problems like hardcounters and ECHO, but the recent increase in dps queue times is because of this people that lose their sanity asking for the shield bot and Zarya all the games. It is disgusting wanting to play your main, and being reported just for it.
