Tank is the least played role

I normal person would learn from their mistakes. The Overwatch team however make mistake, after mistake, after mistake. They seem to insist on destroying their own product.

That would be absurd though! Surely they would have just gone and made balance changes to alleviate the problems, instead of rushing into a worse format for the game and ignoring all feedback on the problem.

That would be stupid.

That would be idiotic.

tbh i play the role less and less because of doomfist
the tanks that counters him are not fun to play for me, and since i always match against df players…

I do have this theory that after the absolute failure of World of Warcraft Shadowlands, all the developers of that expansions were shifted over to the OW2 team while the WoW team got new people. The new WoW team now scores win after win after win for the entirety of the Dragonflight expansion.

Meanwhile in the OW2 department: “Hey guys, let’s give DPS 90% control over the outcome of our games”.

Here’s what they need to do:

  1. Global reduced healing passive for everyone that ramps up over time as the match progresses.
  2. Implement talents, card loadouts and an item purchase system in game.
  3. Start balancing the game around open queue, introduce a hero ban system and have a hero lock system where you can’t swap after picking a hero.

They’d never implement hero locks, which they obviously should, because it’s how they cover for their inept character design. Instead of blaming poor character design the player base has been conditioned to blame “not switching”, it’s a clear tactic Blizzard used to direct criticism elsewhere and sadly many have fallen for it. Not all characters are viable which is why you see the same ones in nearly every match. “Just swap!!!”, people have been conditioned to say, or maybe we can go the really crazy route and have Blizzard put more effort into their character design. I know, now I’m just being silly.

this is always been true, the balancing team is technically at fault but its also the original balancing team from ow1’s launch in 2016

no one wanted to play tank back then either

It’s almost like tanks were in a good place in s8 but that had to be completely thrown out the window for s9

Maybe everyone doing there ‘flex’ queues in QP and getting tank before you do.

IMO The no1 indicator for seeing what role has it the worst is whichever role gets bonus points for playing it.

In OW1 playing Tank gave bonus lootboxes forever. It was always tank that gave more lootboxes.

Now I’ve noticed lately the bonus Battlepass points is only on tank or Flex, which will get you to tank anyway. It used to be in OW2 I queue one game for that role and that bonus goes away after that game.

Not now. Tank gets the bonus 100 BP points every game. At least it did the other night I was playing, and paying attention to it.

You forgetting how horrible the first 4 weeks of S8 was? Mauga ditto every game? That was the worst meta and season off all OW2. The most stale, most boring crud of all.

They fixed Mauga after a month. Maybe they’ll fix more tanks after the same time period with this season. But there are plenty tanks who are eating well this season imo. You just have to adapt your playstyle to the changes. I’m having more fun on tank this season than any of the previous seasons. It’s still not as fun as it could or should be. But way more fun than previous seasons imo.

Tank has been the least played role for a long time.

Are people just starting to wake up?

It just keeps getting worse and worse though. Since 5v5, tanks have too many responsibilities for one person and most of the time, the tank gets all the abuse from a lost match.

AND the constant rock-paper-scissors gameplay loop tanks have with counter swapping just sucks. So tank players have to master every tank character to be a good tank player, while these DPS players can just play some overtuned tutorial hero like S76 and get so much value… Seems fair.

I had no issue with Mauga (mostly cause for 2 weeks he was only in QP and who gives a toss when comp is the mode that matters in the grand scheme). I also just never had much problem with him in comp either. Maybe im just smart enough when engaging certain heroes? Anyway, after his nerfs, people stopped moaning and we settled into a solid season as we moved into the new year. What s9 should’ve been was building off of that success and stability. Instead, the tank role is comprehensively ruined and the support role was left in shambles with no clear role to fulfill.

You give the devs WAY too much credit to think they’ll fix anything, any time soon. Finally, the adaptations one has to make when tanking is a bunch of crap that removes all ability to have fun on tank and makes it an ultra stressful and unfulfilling role that instead of using their large bodies and abilities to tank damage, they MUST use cover all the time, meaning they are never properly engaged in the fight and no longer hold the role of taking and holding space since any attempts to do so is met by dps preventing them from being able to sustain themselves even a little bit.

Sorry but those are the facts we are present with and the only way we’re ever gonna solve them is if we face this sorry truth head on

I didn’t bring up Mauga so much so that you couldn’t beat him. You could. It was just terribly unfun to vs him imo. The most unfun tanking has ever been in OW2, almost as unfun as tanking into launch Brig.

I don’t really give the devs any credit. OW devs have always been blind. Releasing broken heroes, causing many a problem, and instead of fixing the heroes they implement something else to bandaid said problems.

I say ‘maybe’ they’ll fix more tanks. I’ve been asking for dmg and heal nerfs since 5 v 5 started, and they finally did it with health buffs. I’m honestly surprised at how good this patch is imo. They tackled so much in one sweeping patch. Most in the forums here hate it but I think it’s a bounding leap in the right direction on the 5 v 5 path.

Considering they’re never going to bring back 6 v 6. They won’t. It’s never coming back so I realize it’s best to just forget that completely. No point pining over an ex who broke up with you over a year ago.

The bigger the changes in this stale game the better imo. S9 did just that.

Turn my head and weird… this is true for all role based games.

No online game had ever made tanks both fun and strong, tanking is aways the least enjoyable class for most players.

Not the same, most of team 4 was replaced overtime.

I think I would rather step on lego then to play tank at the moment.
