Hello everyone! I’m not looking for help or anything, i’m just here to talk about the workshop in general, i had started working for the first time in the workshop since 2020 Back in covid where i was bored and had nothing to do so i started with the basics in the workshop and later on i’m glad i improved from the experiences and the helps from many people here.
So the thing i wanna talk about was that, i had noticed the new stuff and the new rules / actions and effects they had added over the years and they actually did add one of the things that i wished they had add before and they listened ! But later on i got upset that we got no enough care about the workshop in general, I haven’t looked much around but i had noticed some people complaining about the workshop being abandoned and there were no new updates to it.
Personally, i’m not asking for much, i’m the kind of a person who makes a very simple workshop all i just wished that they had more Play effects and new sound effects / Projectiles etc … i’m asking for the bare minimum at least give us these new effects from the new characters that already exist, Like i wish i had the Kiriko’s kitsune rush effect on the player’s HUD Pov or the other effects.
Of course, i had 1 big wish that may seem super impossible to make
and that is, i wish they will give us some building tools in the Workshop’s maps like the Workshop expanse for example, i kinda wished i could have a building blocks or stairs or rectangle shape where i could make a mini area for the team to hide and make a spawn room or mini houses or halls
( Everything i just said are on the next level i know xD ) Unfortunately i know a lot of people may use this advantage in the wrong way… but no matter what you do, no matter how much you try, Messed up people will find a way,
Anyways i wanted to hear your thoughts about this, am i alone in this? Do you guys think they might be back to us one day with new amazing stuff? Do you have other idea’s you’d love to share? Lemme hear you’re thoughts!
I really hope so, but I’m doubtful… the workshop started as a passion project of a single dev, got updated as people used it more and loved it, but some players still don’t even know about the workshop somehow and i feel like a fairly large chunk ignore it.
I would personally love for the workshop to exceed my expectations and come back swinging strong, but i just don’t see it happening… and even if it i probably wouldn’t go back to it personally, I’ve moved on in my life to better ways to express my coding capabilities and while i cant speak for others but i have a feeling a fair chunk of them did as well.
I know of at least one or two big workshop creators that made complex modes that revived a lot of attention, yet they still left after OW2 because of much of a bad state the workshop was in…
I while i wouldn’t considering myself a big creator, or that my creations have gotten a lot of attention, i have made some quite complex niche modes regarding AI and have been doing the workshop very actively between its first release back in 2019 all the way till a few years after OW2 came out, in 2023.
Guys, I’ve been pessimistic about OW2 since its release. Just look at the rushed quality of skins Blizzard puts out every season and the workshop bugs listed in OW2 Workshop Changes/Bugs | Wiki | Workshop.codes(workshop.codes/wiki/articles/ow2-workshop-changesbugs)
Even if Blizzard fixed just one of these issues per season, it would improve the workshop. But now we’re already on Season 17, and Blizzard can’t even manage to avoid adding new problems to this list with every update.
I was initially excited when the workshop released and all the later updates were great. I use it personally to waste time but it’s fun. It has also been a great learning tool to wrap my head around certain aspects of coding which I could apply in other game engines.
Since OW2 however, I was getting increasingly more pessimistic about any substantial updates, as it became fewer. And I was hearing more comments from the developers about how there isn’t immediate plans or focus for it, at least leading up to the spotlight and even at the spotlight.
Now, this might be a bit wishful thinking and falsely placed optimism but since the spotlight I have been hoping that perhaps the developers might eventually do something more to it. The reason is because there has been such a large vocal request/demand for more from the workshop personally made to the developers at that event and afterwards. And while it is true that they may have no plans any time soon to tend to it, I don’t think they are ignoring those requests, or at least they aren’t unaware. It’s hard to avoid hearing someone, like even some of the major content creators and their communities, consistently asking about it; and a part of me think that they might make some considerations to address those concerns and market demands.
Right now, I think the first thing they need to do is just address the main bugs since OW2. After that, they need to make some adjustments to clean up the UI features and interface to make it more readable and easier to modify.
An update to include and catch up with the new features from other heroes would be great. Then, after all that, I think they can add new stuff. While I can list a bunch of specifics, I think more importantly is to expand the generic settings in the menus (outside of the workshop) that make it easier and accessible for the average player/user who may not understand scripting but wants to make little games and just needs more simple yet flexible direct modifiers to do what they are trying to do. Maybe it’s too much but I think accessibility here goes a long way to get more interested and involved again.
After that it becomes a big wish of expanding the whole workshop, more space, tools, assets, maps, editors, etc. But I think what’s vital is to make those first steps into supporting the community and reassuring to the community that it isn’t dead. That would be my hope.
