technically we could say the same about Starwars. Ok, we have 10,000 products of this franchise, but basically it was a product of the 60s-70s where the concept of science fiction is completely different from today.
Starwatch was a mix between star wars and star trek. it is still a cinematic theme as recognizable as this one that is inspired by kamen rider / power rangers. and a theme inspired by the dark fantasy of He-man would be just as recognizable, right?
it is not necessarily something that should be analyzed according to the generational cue⦠but if it has a fairly precise theme to offer on its culture. I personally really disliked seasons 3 and 7: they were literally the contents of the new lunar year (asian folklore) and the Halloween terror (only partially masked by the event contents of diablo) and I think they did not really have a very different identity from the events of OW1.
With it being summer/summer games time, you would think we would get another round of sports/summer/beachwear skins, which are all usually very popular. This is a crazy move by blizz.
I am a fan of the old ultraman show, and kaiju stuff, but as OW skins? ehhhhhhhā¦
tbf Sojourn deserves no skins because that hero is a warcrime and never shouldve been added to the game. Theres a reason helix rockets arent hitscan and cant crit, but Sojourn being Soldier 2 just had to be given some kinda reason to exist ig.
Iām pretty sure this theme is aimed at younger Generation X and older Millennials who watched these showsā¦
Just like Cowboy Bebop.
Itās like yāall forget OW players are, on average, older than other FPS players. Gotta keep in mind that the two generations above run on nostalgia.
Of course, I was just baby raging and throwing a temper tantrum because I was mad that I have to wait even longer for the only theme I cared about. I feel it is more of a nostalgia theme than anything genuinely directed at children.
Itās also worth noting of course that weāre coming off a theme that gave us a lot of skins that were good design wise on top of being from an interesting concept. The whole āMirrorwatchā verse got a lot of people interested, and at least it was a play on the lore of the in-game world if nothing else.
This is just playing off nostalgia for a brand that, while Iām sure itās still around-havenāt watched in ages-I wouldnāt say is setting the world on fire like it used to.
