Spotlight announcement missing the 2 in Overwatch 2

Could this just be a massive coincidence? Maybe a possible error from the marketing team? Or is this 100% intentional and we might see the 2 being removed from Overwatch 2 this year and we’ll go back to calling the game just Overwatch again

Difficult to say. On one hand, all of the other Blizzard franchises were also referred to by the franchise’s name, e.g. ‘Starcraft’ rather than specifically ‘Starcraft 2’. On the other hand, I would not be surprised whatsoever if they drop the OW2 branding at some point, and this seems like a prime opportunity.

It does say #Overwatch2 in the hashtag underneath.

That is true, but I would like to counterpoint that in the case of Starcraft, Starcraft 1 is still available for the public to play, Overwatch 1 was shut down, and they’ve been pretty heavily leaning into making Overwatch 2 the franchises official name. Of course what you’re saying could still be true but given how they’ve handled this franchises branding the past 20 seasons it feels very out of nowhere to not have the 2 in the name here, especially since the previous Spotlight had the 2 in its name

Solid point, did not know that about the previous spotlight. Maybe you’re onto something!

Probably just Overwatch as a brand/IP. Same how Diablo’s spotlight is just Diablo and not Diablo 4.

to counter your counter point, there is only 1 version of overwatch that is playable

Latest video ‘Vested Interest Story Time’ has the “2”.

Nothing to see here.
