Spilo Dev Matchmaking Interview TLDW

My UI once got bug and I had to play a game with nothing on display

It was quite a cool experience. I actually managed to pull every mechanic and tech without it

But I think Bogur also got an Unranked to GM series, playing Winston with no UI too

Well yeah, that makes sense. In OW1, we had 6v6, so everyone had less impact, so OP stuff felt less broken (but still annoying to fight). Moving to 5v5, the devs said they wanted more individual impact, which made OP interactions more important and impactful. They also did a load of stuff to reduce queue times, including relaxing the matchmaking so we get fast, bad games.

Way i see it, it all adds up. Its not just supports that cause the problem - if you play reaper (for example) with a team comp that doesnt support him, he’s likely to lose. A good team comp and he stands a way better chance of winning.

Not sure about your win streak though

Don’t make sense. This system forces 50/50 win/loss. The problem is not just in matchmaking, in game adaptative difficulty.

At least they acknowledge that there is an overabundance of one-sided stomps and they don’t know what to do about it…

are you on pc? alt z toggles hud off and on

Yeah, but I don’t know. Nothing that a reset can’t fix lol

It clearly makes sense for a static system :smiling_imp:.

Yet you can’t prove it, neither can the dev team. So are why are you gaslighting the forums? Seems odd to me.

Oh like anti cheat programs, Those are very detrimental to NO ONE WHO PLAYS OW2.

They could stop underpaying their employees. Nobody competent is willing to slave for them, so there’s no wonder they had to resort to rigging to at least maintain the illusion that a proper matchmaker exists.

How is an anti cheat program detrimental to your play experience?

They aren’t. They are just repeating a correct statement.

If you think those things are real, that is your choice.

I’m glad to learn that even when the matchmaker gives me the worse tank by far, the worse dps by far, and the worse supports by far (like it does from time to time), it still considers my win rate to be 45% :smirk:

It’s all making sense now, because in that particular case, the odds are actually pretty close to 0-100

Blaming human inconsistencies for stomps seems pretty flawed to me, especially since it’s often quite the opposite. Let me show you one example, even though I feel like I’m just stating the obvious;

Last year, I was able to verify several times that my tank had indeed a very similar SR as the opposing tank, which was quite surprising at first because the tank gap was real. So, what was happening there? Was it throwing? Deranking? Tiredness? Dehydration? Surely it had to be one of these human inconsistencies, right? Well, as it turned out, the diff was probably mainly linked to the fact that these tanks were systematically Roadhog and Mauga players who were, systematically again, ranked Bronze a few seasons ago

In other words, what the MM saw as a 2670 SR tank vs a 2785 SR tank matchup (“a perfect fifty-fifty, trust me, I’ve done the maths”) was, in reality, a game where a boosted Bronze was facing a Diamond on a losing streak, and the actual odds were 15-85, at best

Note that, ironically, in these particular cases, the massive tank diff was created by a MM trying its best to minimize it, whereas picking basically any tank main between high Gold and low Masters would have certainly been better and faster

This is just one example among many, ranging from the most obvious to the most subtle, of questionable balance decisions that lead to inaccurate skill ratings, which in turn mess up the matchmaker on an industrial scale
