🐷 Solved the "Roadhog Problem" with 2-2-2

Roadhog doesn’t fit into the dps category. Neither figuratively NOR literally.

Here’s how I look at 2-2-2 happening.

Initially, it’s going to be a mess. Things will go right back to Dive in higher tiers, because it’ll be unchecked, and some heroes will just be obsolete.

Then you’ll likely see a huge patch (remember how we had one of those recently?) that will really work to add a bunch of buffs to the obsolete heroes so they function better within their role knowing people can’t stack roles anymore.

So… Hog will probably see some pretty dark times… and Brig… and some others, then they’ll all probably be overhauled fairly quickly so they function within their role.

How about ā€œnoā€?

That’s a terrible idea.

Better to not hard enforce 2-2-2 than to pigeon hole tanks into being barrier-carriers.

I think role queue should wait till the game is ready for it, instead of having a hasty launcher followed by months of panic changes that, given the devs’ track record, might not get resolved for a whole year

I’m shaky on this one.

I’ve seen the suggestion fly around, ā€œI’d prefer they got characters balanced out and then 2-2-2.ā€

But look at the cons of that idea… They’re going to balance out characters for both role stacking and to function 2-2-2 when it switches over to that?

I’m not sure if that can realistically happen without wasting a ton of time. Currently, we get a slow amount of updates for characters because they have to be balanced thinking about, what if they role stack? If that was taken out of the equation, there are more direct things to be tested out and easier data to observe.

I think they’ve been working on doing just that this whole time. They’ve even said so, im not going to fish for interviews, but i remember hearing that every now and then on the OWtuber channels back when i used to watch them.

The devs already want to balance Brig and Mei and whoever for 222, and to not be too strong in role stack scenarios.

Thats not the only problem either. When i tank, i like having access to dps heroes because sometimes the whole tank category feels useless and i need a hero that can regenerate by shooting to do the job or someone with area denial that works without line of sight and while causing damage and pressure. Others pick Mei for her wall sometimes. I don’t feel like the tank roster gives me enough options as a player that i want to be locked into it.

Besides, a lot of the playerbase doesn’t even know role queue is coming, it should be a smooth transition.

He’s got sustain, sure.

But his team protection capabilities are rather meh.

And he needs people to protect HIM most the time from feeding tons of Ult charge.

I didn’t say he was a good tank.
He’s just so bad people only recognize the parts of him that work, which is his hook combo and scary gun.

Thing is: projectile shotgun with all that spread and delay is pretty unreliable. Its not widow or hanzo one-shot, thats for sure.

Hook is pretty easy to block but its especially easy to block when you try to play too aggressively as Hog. This example kinda demonstrates it:

Say the enemy has a Zarya. If her team attacks into you as Hog, you can pressure them into burning cooldowns and stuff and force them to position X way and punish with hook. You can sieze an opening or make your own. You can force the zarya to burn bubbles on herself or teammates as the come to you, but they will definitely be ready for you if you try to attack them.

Hog doesn’t have the mobility for that if used as a dps. They will see you, and get ready to force you away by the time you waddle over. Good change you’ll have to vape just to get close enough to do anything btw.

If he had Ana’s hitbox and Hanzo’s silence, then Hog could be a dps.
