Blame the recent junk, pharah, and ashe buffs for double shield making a comeback. There’s too much damage to even think about playing other tanks. Buff dvas DM to old range with a 1 second cool down and we’ll see more variety.

Ppl dont stop playing tank because of double barrier they stopped playing because tanks get shafted constantly by blizz.

Nerfing Barriers isn’t the answer. They Need to buff Doomfist(yes you hear me right), Symmetra, and D. Va

Buffing Sym & Doomfist gives more viable counterplay to Double Barrier & buffing D. Va will give players a reason to choose her over Sigma in in more situations and Will make Dive tanks a little better.

Reinhardt/Zarya sees just as much play as Reinhardt/Sigma lately

Even if you play tank. Play those tanky dps like hog or ball or zarya. Unless you have very good healers on your side or your team knows what to do. Picking rein, orisa, will make you question your life choices.

Now I actually have an idea.

Greatly or remove some of the shields and make tank TANKIER.

Like 1000 HP rein. 800 HP Orisa.

And when they get heals, they get twice the amount.

People will actually enjoy playing tanks if they increase their health. And it makes the game less boring. Keeps adding more shields is such a bad idea.

You have to nerf Shields or make a 1 Shield limit.
The argument of “Double Shield only exists because damage is too strong!” is not true.
Say we nerf all damage across the board without touching Shields.
What would come of it? Oh! Double Shields are even better because the damage is too low to break them regularly!
Nerfing damage won’t stop Double Shield, or make any other Tank more viable. If anything, it will make other Tanks even more of a throw pick because Double Shield will be literally unkillable.

It’s needed. I’m not saying we should remove them altogether. But it must have a maximum or they will destroy the game.

Makes perfect sense.

Double barrier is boring.

Boring to play against.
Boring to play as.

I hate playing barrier tanks. I hate playing against them. Nobody likes spending 3/4ths of the game shooting at blue rectangles.

Get barriers out of the spotlight. They should be an option. Not a requirement.

Not to this degree.

It wasn’t difficult to get two tanks together during dive.
It wasn’t difficult to get two tanks for double-sniper.
It wasn’t difficult to get two tanks for pull-hook.
It wasn’t difficult to get three tanks for GOATS.

Double barrier?

There is a chronic shortage of tanks because nobody wants to play a passive rectangle dispenser. Nobody wants to play that passively while other people get to have fun.

Just get it over with and nerf all barriers down to roughly Orisa’s level and turn all tanks into off-tanks.

There’s a reason that Hog has the third highest tank pick-rate and the third lowest tank win-rate.

He sucks…but he’s fun.

the issue is dps dont like tanks, and thus they’re nerfed

d.va is good? everyone cries for nerfs and she gets gutted because they pressed q into matrix.
Orisa is good? nerfed because double shield isn’t fun to play against.
rein is good? people complain that he’s busted.
hog is good? people complain that he’s not a tank but a dps.

I mean… Clearly there was. 222 wasn’t just about stopping 33. But stopping 123.

I think this shows again, an underlying problem…

Every other meta has involved tanks that…were not shield tanks exclusively.

Moreover, sigma rein is a meta despite originally being an orisa thing.

And rein has always been a blue man.

But what we never had, was both: weakened tanks , weakened healers, AND beefed up dps.

Because if it was just finding tanks
… We got em. On dps.

It’s a pretty easy fix. Pick one of these:

  • 1BarrierTank maximum per team
  • If there’s 2BarrierTank, apply some midgame balance change that nerfs it
  • Make it so BarrierTanks are weaker at close range

Every other meta had enough square footage for off-tanks. Meanwhile this meta just walked in with its jackboots and told 5/8ths of the tanking roster to take a hike. You can’t just shove the majority of the tanks onto a shoe-rack and not expect tank players to just slip on some comfy sandals and deal with it elsewhere…like in the DPS queue.

The barrier tanks are not fun to play for a majority of the playerbase. You just stand there and do nothing for most of the game. Their kits are totally anemic and just don’t allow you any agency. Instead, they allow you to give other players agency which just isn’t attractive for most people.

It’s why I’m a fan of nerfing the crap out of barriers and giving the barrier tanks more agency of their own. Let them make plays. Let them beat people up. Make them make space through aggression rather than through being a passive piece of furniture.

Too complicated. Not intuitive at all. Not logical. Nobody would ever expect barrier tanks to work like that.

Much better in the long run for the game if they nerf barriers almost to nothing and counter-buff the barrier tanks into brawlers that can compete with the off-tanks that can already brawl.
