Placement matches are the minimum qualifier matches to earn end-of-season rewards. If a player ended in Plat last season, and had a 1-4-0 record, they would very likely still be Platinum or at the very worst high Gold as those matches continue to build on the existing hidden matchmaking rating which skill rating is based off of.
