Sigma’s lack luster Personality

I think sigma was meant for more personality wise, we had that intro movie that showed an interesting character we were going to get.

We thought it was going to be someone smart who could go crazy at the drop of a hat, and then snap back to offering you Tea and a biscuit with the most polite attitude.
We thought we were going to get a deeper character struggling with the duality of his personalities fighting to take control.

But instead we have sigma just being a boring polite professor.

I’m not sure what he is diagnosed with, what mental health issue, maybe schizophrenia, but blizzard went very halfway with his design and I think it’s because they didn’t want to portray a mentally ill person in their game as being crazy or being something for us to shoot at and kill.
I think Twitter and the other undesirables would start a lynch mob after them so blizzard had to sacrifice his character in order to not offend or push the envelope.

Being that safe and eager to not offend ahead of time, seems like it sacrificed an interesting character that we may never truly get to see.

I see where you are coming from, but I feel as though he does have both his normal, polite side and his “crazy” side. Normally, Sigma is calm, perhaps a little anxious at worst, quietly humming or rambling. He seems a little off-edge, but okay overall. When he thinks of his “incident” back in space or that “melody” is when he goes crazy. I dunno, I just see both.

How many times during a voice line or character interaction in game have you seen his crazy side?
Maybe during his ult but it’s very tame, nothing like him shouting “VIOLENCE!” Or what I thought we would get. Honestly junk rat is more crazy than sigma.

General Overwatch gameplay doesn’t really lend itself to fleshing out a character. I think it’s fine that Sigma has a cool cinematic, a bunch of disturbing sprays and to leave it at that.

Okay, that is true. He even comments “What is this violence?” upon getting an elimination. Maybe Talon has helped him find ways to cope with it by now?

I just thought we would get more of a Dr. Jekyll Mr. Hyde type of character.
Personally I think they were just playing it safe. Like they wanted to hint and dabble but they didn’t want to actually expand on it.

We already have that in Winston, really, and Primal Rage does a lot better expressing that than anything in Sigma’s kit.

You would think Talon would want him to be a killing machine. I guess they take mental health very seriously lol

Winston’s rage, isn’t anything like Sigma’s unhinged personality.

Rage isn’t something that makes you forget your actions, or suddenly forget what morals are.

Sigma’s personally is supposed to show that he has a genuine split.
One moment you’re talking to Sigma, the polite professor…
The next, he’ll teach you the real meaning of violence.

Winston’s rage, is more like a primal instinct.
Sigma’s personality is simply… split.

I have experience with people who have similar personalities, even in my own family… and it’s nothing like a primal feeling, anger, or rage…

One minute you know them, and the next… they are a completely different person.

Sigma in the lore, is actually terrifying.
Sigma in game…

Is an edgelord marketed to boys who feel “Crazy” because they lash out for attention and can relate to a character who lashes out at random, seemingly to support their own ego which resides outside of reality.

So you wanted someone like the Joker in the game. How early 2000’s of you.

He’s not even that, he shows no signs really of been crazy in game. He’s just very pleasant to talk to. It’s almost like they cut the entire crazy unpredictable side out of him.

My favorite characters are the ones most people say are boring. Shrug. Pharah, Bap, and Sigma. Not everyone needs to be larger than life.

Actually…

Anyway, I have real life experience with such people, too, and that’s why I doubt you can really convey it in a team-based first person shooter, but I think they’ve done the best that they could. Also, Sigma isn’t an edgelord in the game. That’s more Junkrat or Reaper. Like the OP says, most of the time he’s fairly reserved.

Well sigma wasn’t really meant to be boring. And Baptiste is basically just will smith so he’s kind of by default likable.

Oh no, i mean in his actions. The shallow way to convey “Character” to young boys.

He throws big things, he throws balls that kill people, he talks big.

That’s it. It’s as shallow as that.

And you know, it was once said… it’s better to be deep and simple than it is to be shallow and complex.

If you believe that a person isn’t responsible for their actions, due to having been angry at the time, compared to someone who wasn’t even aware of their actions… i don’t want to argue but that sounds like you need to reevaluate some things.

That’s what makes someone with a split personality so… scary.
Someone who doesn’t even know what the other half does.

murders someone

leaves and comes back

“WHO DID THIS TO YOU!!”

Some people lose control when in a genuine rage. I don’t know why you don’t believe me, but thanks for being rude, I guess.

As simple as that is, yea… that’s what makes it terrifying.

I’ve had family members who were capable of nearly that exact thing.

Oh i’m not being rude, i’m just trying to specify that there is a clear difference.

I’ve been the kind of angry that makes me see red, but it doesn’t make me forget who i am.

Some people do become blinded with rage. it’s not quite that they don’t know what’s happening but it’s more that in the moment they don’t care or think about the consequences of their actions.

But Winston can’t be compared to Sigma.

Exactly this.

I’ve been blinded by genuine rage, where i would be literally capable of murder if someone made the wrong move.

But that doesn’t mean i wasn’t aware of what was happening, or that i would forget afterwards.
