RNG is bad in serious competitive game, but Overwatch isn’t that kind of game.
It’s the whole reason why Overwatch sold well - because anyone can grab a cool looking hero and do cool stuff. It was clearly designed around casual light-hearted fun.

I mean, i’d argue that it’s because i’m a newbie that i try out things. But i guess it’s my fault that i’m doing that in ranked matches… Sometimes i’d just switch if i feel like i’m getting deleted too easily.
That’s my main problem tho. If i actually play Sombra in ALL my games then i’ll be playing with 5 or 6 DPS characters most of the time, which isn’t fun because there just won’t be enough healing or shielding. Another reason why i decided to main Sombra is because she can render a tank or healer useless with hacks, but another problem that comes from that is that my team can hardly do a follow up from it. So the hack duration will end without them taking further damage. Maybe i’ll just start learning bow dude or Tracer or something.
Welp, i’ll just keep playing Sombra or maybe Mei then? even if i lose even more matches… I guess my main objective for now is to just get better at this game.
You really don’t have to worry about that, just play to have fun. This game is extremely random by design, there really isn’t much to it. If you want to try different heroes in ranked, go for it.
You are only level 31, you have a long time to learn how to play the game and get better.
Btw Sombra is terrible at most of the ranks, don’t play her if you want to win more.
Oh, one addenda to my post - don’t one-trick off-meta heroes. You’ll get reported by everyone after any loss (doesn’t matter if you did well or not) and be banned.
As for the rest - stick to one hero, regardless if you have 5 DPS on your team or not. Doesn’t matter. Just get kills. Rest is meaningless. Get pick after pick. Hopefully your teammates will remember to take the objective/escort the cart.
Oh wow reporting people because they play off meta is a thing? And are Sombra and Mei not meta? They feel like they can be really useful in a lot of situations tho…
I half agree with what everyone is saying with stick to heroes your good at but i’d add to it a little, try to find at least 1 hero in each role your good at, not just like tank/dps/heals thought. Like 1 main tank, 1 off tank, 1 burst heal, 1 defensive ult heal, 1 flank dps, and 1 burst damage dps.
In plat and below your SR gain/loss is based on how well you play so if you lose but you played really well you wont lose as much SR as you would if you played not well and lost so its kind of to your advantage to just play whoever you can play well with. Diamond and up its a flat rate on how much SR you gain/lose meaning it doesnt matter how well you play, if you win everyone gains the same if you lose everyone loses the same so at that point knowing how to fill any role to best help your team becomes the only way to climb into masters and beyond.
I’d like to to do this, i know for a fact on the right map, my widow is my most impactful hero by a longshot, however the anxiety induced from playing her is unbearable, not out of fear of my own performance but my teams reaction to it.
Yesterday on junker town attack i got us 5 picks before we pushed the cart halfway to first point, each within 10 seconds of the last, no one bats an eye-lid.
(widow was 2 of those kills as she got ressed)
We get to the doors with no shield and 3 of us get picked off including me by their widow, “WIDOW SWITCH, THERE’S ABSOLUTELY NO POINT IN YOU IF YOU DON’T KILL THE OTHER WIDOW”.
I died TWICE after that the entire game, both times I was again angrily commanded to switch immediately upon death, meanwhile, the Ashe flaming me can’t take gold damage off a widow while being pocketed and damage boosted by his mercy friend to the extent that the mercy has substituted healing the rest of the team with just ressing them when they die alone and ignored.
The worst thing is people only seem to want to pay attention to when you die, but are apparently spontaneously blinded when ever you start lighting up the kill feed.
You’re in low gold. When I was in that SR range, I felt the same way. I mean, I still do, but it was much worse there. I had to place 150 sr higher into mid gold just to climb. No one there is going to work as a team, so don’t rely on anyone. Instead, be the player who you wish would help you. Look for ways to help your team mates accomplish their goals and do their jobs. You also just need to get a well rounded understanding of how your hero works and what their primary role is.
Personally, I used D.Va to get out of gold. She can do a lot of things which leaves more for you to control.
I’m asking because… well let’s start with, this game is quite complex and difficult. Many heroes, many maps, many mechanics and interactions that plain and simple take a bunch of time to learn. Most people still haven’t learned it well enough. (It’s what’s kept me at it for three years.
)
So the first thing you do is give yourself time. Recognise you still have a $hitton to learn before you’re able to compensate for the mistakes your teammates make.
Also, expect to keep falling. The game places new accounts somewhere in the middle due to the lack of stats, but then only smurfs stay there or climb, mostly. So it’s quite possible for you to drop down to silver and possibly even bronze. Best you can do is to not sweat over it. As you get better, you will climb.
For now, don’t rely on your team too much and don’t get frustrated with them. Don’t expect much of them, really. Yeah, people will forever-not-move as bastion, people will try to play ana even though they can’t hit their shots, reinhardts are gonna be bat$hit crazy with their charges and the best you can do is accept that. If you tilt and get angry, you’re gonna be done with this game pretty quickly. And after all, you play a game to have a good time, not to come out of it raging with a puff of black smoke over your head.
Focus on the core heroes for a start - you can learn a lot by playing Rein, Soldier, Mercy at the beginning. Use the enormous youtube resourse for hero tips. It’s amazing how far you can go just with game knowledge, even if your mechanics aren’t good.
At some point you will start to win ranked games. For most of us, whether a game is won or lost is decided by who makes less mistakes. You can only improve yourself and in your self-improvement help your team with their F-ups. So focus on your progress and don’t pay too much attention to your SR.
P.S. Also, yeah, 200 SR is quite the difference. For example, if I’m on a losing streak and fall down that much, the game just skyrockets me back to my usual rank. But if you think the difference between 2400 and 2600 is big, you should see what the difference between 4100 and 4300 is. Now THAT is a skill disparity.
Ranked is a joke. The whole system is messed up. I stopped playing it and can’t even take it seriously because of the many issues it has, along with the base game itself. Ranging from nonsensical MMR, to useless and not needed placement matches and other issues that involve leavers and people that are way too toxic because of lack of proper punishments.
Why people even play ranked is beyond me.
For a moment I thought that I was reading a post from a year ago.
Outplaying the other team works reasonably well.
IM at a loss too with this game at this point. I love to play. I guess I Do well and play a couple of heroes really “decent” (at best). I was in Gold for quite awhile. Then I just started getting teams where people literally fed in, and of course everyone loses SR
I think the only thing at this point that works is to recite the words “Forgive me father Kaplan, for I have sinned, Give me a good game and deliver me from all smurffs. By the power of loot-boxes, and the mighty dollar in the Blizzard Coffers, amen”.

I dont know. I just dont know at this point…
Get used to that.
As far as I have heard the game puts the new accounts around gold but that doesn’t mean you belong there. It is all up to you from there on.
There are way better players in lower ranks that have been playing in years. Don’t expect to be better than them from the start.
Flexing is bad 4 u. Thats all i have to say.
Onetricking or maining = more success.
Moira’s utility is her simplicity
Her ability to support other people.
Damage orb is a damage assist for your DPS
Healing orb is a healing assist for other LOS based off healers to help top up heroes faster, in the off chance that it will take time for you to reach em
Her coalescence paired with a damage orb is a very nice way to initiate a push, and it requires tracking (elitists rejoice)
The same thing with a healing orb means you can keep your people alive really well. Its no transcendence, but its no GA either.
Mei is the cheapest. You have to freeze people to shoot them. That is how bad I feel when I play her. The greatest skill check and the cheapest to play.
Zen is epic cool. I have a 73% win rate on him rn (I ain’t playing cos I know anything could break this winstreak. Plus I wanna get his aim in)
Ana takes a hell lot of time to master. Gale has literally one tricked ana to T500. Mad Lad has 1000 hrs on her. Absolute unit.
Ana and Zen have the capability to carry games single handedly, but Zen’s ult building relies hella lot on his ability to secure kills with discord and damage with his orbs.
If you do wanna do aim, just do this. It works really well:
You can’t consistently rely on your team at gold. Flexing too far from your comfort zone won’t help you win games either. Think about 3-4 heroes that you are good with (or would like to get good with), and focus on them and only them. At gold SR I’d also put a bit more emphasis on heroes that are self-reliant or have high “carry potential” (for example, Zen).
If you want to improve your SR quickly, upping your mechanical skill will be an easy way to start at a gold level. Look up a guide or two on video settings, how to find a proper mouse sensitivity, aim practice routines, etc. Focusing on anything beyond basic game sense (what am I doing, and why?), teamwork (basic ult combos), and other non-mechanical skill (communication, morale management) is going to be more effort for less payoff IMO because your team and the enemy team won’t be predictable or efficient until you start to reach higher ranks.
Yes. Your favourite hero is probably your best hero and will in turn increase your performance and then increase your skill rating. Flexing puts the carry role in the others hands, you need to keep that in yours. Then the game is more in your control.
Enough to make a noticable, and game deciding difference.
If you want to carry as dps in gold, you will need to be godlike since you are lacking in sustain and tankiness on your own.
I have a feeling your game sense might not be up to par yet to be playing with plat players. Moira is recommended not because of how easy it is to aim with her, but because of how much she can do with game sense alone. She will force you to learn when is the right time to engage and what your options are aggressively or defensively.
She can heal herself and get picks for her team which is extremely valuable if you don’t trust your allies to kill anything. This alone can win you games up to diamond.
Gold players unfortunately lack teamwork and game sense. If you want to climb, you’ll have to carry your team which is hard unless you can heal yourself and get picks.
Roadhog and Moira are the most self-sufficient heroes you can use. Mei although she has self-sustain, relies too heavily on wall placement and for your team to follow up since her damage is too low/risky. Soldier’s heal is too weak to keep him alive in most cases. Sombra can get picks, but spends a decent amount of time disengaging compared to road/moira.
Callouts only work if your team is willing to listen. Gold and low plat players will most likely not listen. Read your allies. If you are trying to call out plays and your team doesn’t follow up, use a less complicated strategy or follow up with a tank.
