Hi. I was watching Cyx the other day and almost always he hooks someone and move it around a corner. You know, I don’t mean the simple hook + turn. I mean, when the normal hook + turn would leave the enemy stuck on the wall, Cyx looks right and then left (or vice versa) and pulls it around the corner.
I was trying, but I couldn’t replicate the trick, so if someone understand how it works, I would appreciate the tip.
Thanks.
Basically, turn hooks like ones you reference require a bit of finesse.
If you notice how he does it, there are some turn hooks where he’ll look opposite for an instant to the place he wants to displace, then spin counter that direction to arrive at the location, before the target arrives, and ending where he wants them, all in very quick succession. Or he’ll sorta stall and move his camera right before the target gets to him.
What the tech essentially does is cheese the multiple LoS checks hook does when hooking and reeling the target in. I’m describing it as cheesing but it’s essentially just pretty clever manipulation of the game engine.
If you hook someone at the edge of a choke/corner and try to just look at the corner where you want them, it’ll break when the target collides with a wall, placing them as close as possible before connecting with the wall. That’s where the tech comes in.
What Cyx is doing is manipulating the camera to have the hook+reel check for LoS in open places, and then snapping to the desired location at the last second, basically avoiding checks for walls or things that would ordinarily break hook, letting him essentially trap and wedge people out of position and body blocking them in with Roadhog’s character model.
If you keep this in mind while you’re practicing your trick turn hooks, you should be able to place anyone anywhere you want within reason.
If you have a mouse that’s capable of using a DPI switch, it might be worth making a profile with a toggle to go high enough to turn extremely quickly, but I don’t know if Cyx just plays at high sens and does it manually, or has a similar setup.
Hope that helps!
it takes practice and it probably has to do with LOS manipulation tactics that make it look funky
he turns his camera in a way that they’re just pulled around the corner and then quickly looks back to snap them into a position he can bodyblock them. during the animation you have to quickly hook them to point A far away from the wall, make sure they’re pulled to that location, and then quickly snap them into position
not sure if that makes any sense but that’s what i notice
Thats exactly it. You can pull people “through floors” with it as well (always fun to do). So long its done properly- you can pull them in so many directions (so long as the LOS checks pass)
