Return Stadium best-of-7

Well, 20 or so games in and I’ve tried, I’ve really tried to give these changes a chance. For now, the best way to describe my feeling towards the change? At best?.. I can just about tolerate it. A game you can tolerate isn’t one you’re likely to return to very often, if at all.

In those 20 games, ~67% Win rate. I’ve snowballed, I’ve been snowballed and there’s been a few 3-2 wins and losses.

Of being snowballed… it’s simply not fun.
Of snowballing… it’s really not fun either.
Of those that went 3-2 or 2-3, managed to get 6 purple items several times, but the enjoyment still wasn’t there.

There now feels like a distinct lack of:

  • Rewarding choices.
  • Challenge.
  • Team collaboration.
  • Meaningful decision making.
  • Excitement.

Last season, whilst it’s not something I like to admit, I could spend 6-8 hours playing, back to back. Queues could be long, but while you wait custom games would fill that void. These past two evenings, I needed a break after 2-3 games.

Perhaps it just needs time. Perhaps after some finer tuning it’ll feel better. Presently though, the pacing and scaling just feels like bit of a super sonic train wreck, and hitting the wall at the end is only slightly more painful than not.

I didn’t even mind losing Stadium matches last season. They were fun and engaging. I would immediately hit that REQUEUE button as soon as I could. I tried switching to Comp last night, but because I changed all my hero camera/aim-assist settings for third person view (I play on console), aiming felt like a wet noodle in first person view. That was what kept me out of Comp after Stadium dropped - lack of third person view (I much prefer it over first person). I feel like both modes are disjointed from one another, and now with this sudden change in Stadium gameplay it’s not worth my time to rank up again.

I compare my experience with Stadium to Rocket League, a game I invested thousands of hours before coming back to Overwatch - you picked a car body (hero) and played a game mode. That’s it. The camera settings were the same in all modes, the buttons were the same in all modes (complaining about gadget button addition since console controllers have limited buttons as is), and if you REALLY wanted a longer format, you could play Tournaments - events with the same team, single elimination, bracket format. If you made it to the finals, the tournament run time could be 90+ minutes. with the final rounds being BO3 series. It was fun, engaging, absolutely no power ups, just good old tournament play that take place every night. In all my years of RL, no one openly complained about tournaments running too long. I would single queue up for RL tournaments nightly.

To me, Stadium is a lot like RL tournaments. I pick a hero, I create a build based on the playstyle I’m comfortable, make micro adjustments to accommodate my team and opposing team, and play. That’s it. Win or lose, I always had fun.

Third day and still silence…

So then,
A. What are you doing chiming in about a friend and how much they play and what they do etc etc if you don’t even play yourself?
And
B. If they were so concerned about bleeding players last season, why would they risk bleeding the players they already have? All i play is stadium now, period the end. If it’s not reverted i will not be playing. I know I’m not the only person to feel this way. Drastically changing the core of a game mode that brought people back to the game without any warning whatsoever will cause those same players to leave and never come back. Super smart.

Because that friend is being misunderstood and I’m trying to correct a number of misconceptions from people like yourself. Because unlike me, she actually likes and plays the mode. But many people are accusing her of only playing for the skins. And that’s just not true. She has an extremely valid criticism of the game mode and people are being dismissive.

Yes. Because the devs have already stated something I think is horribly wrong (but this is their perspective not mine) that making big changes is how they keep the game going. That’s why they added perks (which I hate). That’s why they added Stadium (which I hate). That’s why they did 5v5. That’s why they made this change to Stadium. That’s why map voting happened. It’s why hero bans happened.

They have added a ton of things that some people like but a majority seem to hate in the name of “keeping the game fresh”.

Well, there’s no accounting for taste. It’s a bad mode. But I’m glad you like it.

I’m like 75% sure that they are going to make a change in January to core game that’s going to be a similar breaking point for me. I’m dreading it. But this is what the devs do. My guess we get the Overwatch equivalent of Marvel Rivals team-ups and it’s going to be terrible. That’s speculation of course, but watch it happen.

They should never ever ever change the core gameplay. But they keep doing it repeatedly and have openly stated that they want to do it even more often. I totally disagree with them. They’ll likely drive me away too.

I absolutely adore you. Thank you for that 100 percent accurate post. I couldn’t have done any better

Well she’s the one who made that post stating that that is why she plays, for the skins. So based off that post that SHE made and no one forced her to, we responded. To chime in purely based off a concern of whether or not you earn a skin is selfish. (Blizzard should remove the skins from stadium as it delutes the quality of the matches.) And then when we say that, because it has nothing to do with the actual mode, she cries about being attacked. Girl bsffr.

Okay… Stadium brought a lot of players back who either already quit or were getting ready to. Enough people like the mode quite a bit. If you don’t even like it why are you here commenting? Go play something you like! We had been playing something we LOVE only for it to be drastically changed with no actual explanation. I guess i just doing understand why you’re chiming in on something you don’t care about.

If they’re going to leave Stadium comp best of 7, they should at least be consistent.

The need to turn standard Competitive rules into a copy of standard Quickplay rules. 1 team gets attack, and the other gets defense. No switching sides. If the attackers push all the way they win, and if they don’t the defenders win. Think of how much faster games will be once you can finish them in a single round!

If that sounds like a change that fixes something nobody had a problem with while actively making Competitive less fun for the people who already liked it, congratulations. Now you understand why people are upset by the Stadium changes.

I don’t know. They removed the restriction against mirror matches that they tried to implement in Stadium last season. I still have hope that they won’t kill off competitive stadium for no good reason.

She didn’t say it in a way that implied she was only playing for the skins. And despite multiple attempts at correcting that, people refuse to accept that they misunderstood her intent.

She also said this literally one post up

And she was replying to this guy who literally was replying to her post I just quoted above. He’s a few crayons short of a box to be honest.

I get her next reply could have been worded better but if you read the context then it’s very clear that she is a regular Stadium player and just replied the way she did because she was frustrated by the dimwit’s response to her.

And this wasn’t her only concern first of all. Second of all it isn’t selfish. Skin rewards for modes like this are incredibly bad ideas. It’s not selfish to want the reward the game dangles in front of your face. It’s normal. But the game shouldn’t be doing that in the first place.

Agreed 100%

Because she was. Before she even used the word skin someone accused her.

I’ve already explained this. Go read my previous reply to you.

I do! I play the most popular mode the most. And I hope they don’t ruin it because literally every change they do makes it worse.

Well, as long as they are going to offer rewards for Stadium then they need to take feedback from people who don’t enjoy it about what might make them enjoy it. And honestly shorter games is high on that list.

Like I said, I explained this already. I don’t understand what you don’t understand. If y’all hadn’t gone after my friend then I wouldn’t be here.

That’s exactly what I’ve been comparing it to also! What’s worse is that they didn’t even tell us they were making the change until the patch released.

I think that’s really sad though. She has to avoid comms rather than men asking their fellow men to be better and the community changing. Being a decent person is not hard and kindness is free, yet so many people seem to fail at it.

I’ve just caved and played my first game after reinstalling.

Way too quick. Builds I’ve spent seasons building are now nowhere near as good, because you don’t get the cash to flesh them out in just 3 rounds, and the UI being even more difficult really adds to the time pressure.

Stadium always felt like it was about careful planning, and working together. Knowing what went right or wrong in the last round, and making changes to correct / strengthen. This just feels like a mad dash, and all that nuance is gone.

People are going to be so quick to throw after a first round loss, and the points awarded are way too high. This won’t bring retention, it’ll make people grind it out quickly in the first week, and then they’ll go back to other stuff.

Massive, massive fumble by the Devs.

It’s honestly shocking how tone-deaf the latest dev comments are. They clearly have no idea what makes Stadium worth playing.

As someone who loved Stadium I thought the quickplay version was too fast and confusing to onboard new players, and there was no cooldown rounds to counter your enemy or change your strategy. No room to breathe.

I guess I won’t be playing much Overwatch any more. Stadium’s best of 7 format is what brought me back to the game for two seasons in a row.

Just in time for Battlefield 6 too, at least I won’t be bored!

I would say I prefer bo5 over bo7 but as it clashes with other opinions I probably just get hated on.

bo7 feels to long and I won’t ever Touch qp.
People meme and throw to much to waste my time with it.

People not trying ruin any qp mode.

This is the worst version of stadium holy what a s*** show 5 rounds is!! Stadium is DEAD

Lumin don’t bother with these people. Quoting things will not convince them that they were said. They’re the kind of people to view people they disagree with as bad and people they agree with have a halo effect. This TeeHee person especially will not be convinced of anything and is dead set on villainizing me for getting upset by condescending remarks their friend made. They got upset that I pointed out someone was apologizing when Teehee was demanding an apology from them so they decided to go ballistic on me (you’re not as subtle as you think you are, TeeHee). I appreciate your help, but I prefer to just drop this thread and never speak to these people again. I only stopped in cause I was told you made a reply. I apologized for my behavior and taking things personally but they were not interested. That said, I am sorry for stooping to that level. I should try to maintain a level head and do better at controlling how I react.

Said the one who constantly manipulated every other people’s words despite them trying to be polite and diplomatic in trying to explain why your opinion was out of place and technically irrelevant to the point discussed.
But hey, don’t let me stop you from playing that victim card while you say you should be stopping interacting with us terrible people (but you still do).

Yeah, I’m just out. I don’t think they get their own mode.
