(RESOLVED) Ping issues on PS5 for weeks. Please fix!

UPDATE (02/12) - From the devs’ bug report thread:

Recently Resolved
Severe latency issues affecting all platforms (and especially PS5) have been resolved.

UPDATE (02/11) - I’m hesitant to be optimistic but we played for about 2½ hours tonight and every game was crisp and smooth with pings in the 40-60 range. I hope they quietly fixed the problem… Fingers crossed.

*********

UPDATE (02/10) - The ping issue is still happening… worse, actually. Even when I’m blessed with 60-70, it’s unstable with characters teleporting all over the place. This is ridiculous, Blizzard. SAY SOMETHING. At least say you’re looking into it!! The silence is embarrassing. Your game is only playable half the time right now!! I was beyond excited for this season and now I’m ready to uninstall the game.

Opened this ticket with Blizzard. After two canned responses that told me nothing, they told me to post on the forums so the development team can see, so here we go. My ticket read:

“Latency issues have been a problem on PS5 exclusively for the past several weeks, and based on this Reddit thread, it’s happening to multiple users. I’ve also been experiencing it.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Overwatch/s/rTRbMx6Yal

My husband and I both play on PS5s on separate TVs in the same room. Our usual ping is about 60-70. For the past several weeks, the ping is wildly inconsistent, often settling much higher (150-250) or spiking multiple times mid-match. My ping and my husband’s ping often don’t match, despite being on the same network. Online friends we play with all over the country are also citing it as an issue for them. We even have a friend who will play in the same room with us, on the same network, but on his laptop, and his ping is a consistent, silky-smooth 20-30 while ours is chaotically wavering the whole time.

Occasionally, resetting the game, the PS5, or the router will correct, but the ping can be fine one match and change the next. It also seems to be worse in the evenings (9:00 PM EST). A few nights ago, we couldn’t play at all because we couldn’t get it below 240. Last night, it was basically fine until about 9:10 when suddenly my husband’s was at 225 while mine was at 70.

We have stellar internet and an extremely efficient router. We work from home and have no other issues with our network… all day streaming music and videos, taking calls on Teams, and playing other online games on PS5 (like Genshin Impact, Borderlands 3, and Ravenswatch) with zero issues. This is specifically occurring with Overwatch on PS5 only."

Can confirm that this is also a serious issue on PS4 as well (and there are a few threads here regarding some folks on PC experiencing this as well).

I have been rubber banding all over the place, seeing enemy models fall into the floor then pop up again mid fight, input lag is disastrously long so much so that the game becomes essentially unplayable outside of a hero like Mercy, because any shot I take will first not fire and then every character model stutters a bit and everyone has moved while I’m still firing the old, laggy shot that will never hit anything at that point. Purchasing items and powers in stadium produces lag as well, and this extends to all menu interactions.

Yesterday was in a stadium qp match and after we won a fight, my character moved backwards for a solid three or five seconds and eventually walked off the map (pit on samoa capture point, I fell down the elevator pit then off map….). Shortly after the mercy on my team was disconnected. Definitely not my choice to do that lol

Essentially my entire play experience is about one to two seconds behind. In a pvp environment, we all know those are unplayable circumstances.

I’m worried that they’re about to add in 3d character models all over the place, putting even more strain on our systems. And all the new heroes producing their own swath of issues… This game desperately needs optimization.

I have been experiencing this for a few days now, and am on the east coast if that matters (since the PC threads all make mention of the server theyre connected to as east coast players). I’ve asked inside my lobbies if others were experiencing the same lag and the response was overwhelmingly yes. Time of day doesn’t seem to matter in my case, I play anywhere from noon to 8am, and this has occurred during all hours of play, including very late night/early morning when the player population drops. It is also not a matter of my personal internet connection. And this lag exists only when playing overwatch, exclusively. Definitely something wrong here

Can confirm. I and my duo in central Canada have been consistently getting 140+ latency games for weeks. Maybe once a night I’ll get a normal 45 latency game. It’s not our ISPs or connections - it’s Overwatch servers.

Blizzard, this really, really, REALLY sucks. PLEASE work on this.

Can also confirm that this is also happening to me. I’m on east coast servers and once it hits 7pm or 8pm my latency goes from 34ms to 200ms. Makes the game basically unplayable for ranked and this has been happening for about 2 months now.

Same thing here (though on PS4). Restarting it sometimes seems to fix it for a few games (presumably I connect to different servers?), but then the 250 ms ping is back.

Glad I’m not the only one, they really need to address this. 300 ping and disconnecting in comp isn’t fun, especially when other games are fine.

This super spiked for me today. Had about a 10 second delay between any action, it was awful. I know it’s not just me, my friends have the issue too. I restarted the game and it stabilized and started console but it creeps back in.

Update: found where to turn on ping in game. Yeah, the ping is just 200+ and bad. They really are about to drop a huge update and the game is already so unstable on PS5. Where’s the betting pool for how bad it will be on new season day? :skull:

launch day edit: baha so… bets coulda made us rich! :joy: almost like we saw this coming tbh.

My wife has been experiencing pretty much the same issue for over a week. I play on PC and we will be on at the same time, she will be at 160-250 ping and i’m sitting at a stable 40. We have even tried FOUR different routers and called our ISPs tech support to no avail. Hopefully they can get this resolved soon.

Experiencing the same thing. This is the only game that has the issue and depending on if I restart my router, or WiFi, close and reopen the game it affects the Ping. I use to get 45-50 sometimes lower but now it sits at 55-60 if I restart everything with the packet loss icon almost always on. Late at night it skyrockets anywhere from 90-200.

I noticed that started happening right around the DDOS attack a few weeks ago. The stability of the connection just never seemed to recover.

Been having the same issue, i even dissembled my ps5 to make sure it wasn’t dusty (which it was) after i put everything back together the problem persisted. I restarted my router, upgraded my internet speed, cleaned my game cache, deleted and downloaded the game and the problem still there, i live in the east coast and idk if its only affecting this region. Blizzard HELP! This is the only game i play :frowning:

Just had a whole game at 275 latency.

HOW’RE THOSE SERVERS COMING ALONG, BLIZZARD?

ARE YOU EVEN AWARE OF IT?

Keller says he wants players to “have trust in the game,” is this how you establish it? ‘Cause you could maybe stand to make some improvements.

Same thing on PS5.. bf uses ps5 Ethernet as well and has good ping but sometimes it’s the opposite so weird

It’s just OW. Test with other games and his latency will be fine.

Being having the same issue for the past 2 weeks. My normal ping is around 60 and now i cant play a match where it goes below 250. Its weird because sometimes i play with a friend from the brazil region and when we get into a match that is on his server i have around 150 ping. Cosidering what my ping is rn when i play in NA servers that a blessing.

It’s not PS5 specific. Probably East Coast specific. Check out this thread that has been there for days

Hi, I’m from Latin America and I’ve been having these same problems since the attack on the European servers. I’ve been quite frustrated. I’ve seen PC users having this problem too, including close friends of mine :frowning: We’re so close to the new season, Blizzard should fix this.

Yes, this is also a very interesting observation that is applicable to 2 PCs on the same LAN playing in the same lobby. This specific issue has been present for months. For at least half a year. See the thread I linked in my previous comment where we had a brief discussion regarding this

I don’t think that’s the case. We have a friend who regularly plays in our basement with us, but he plays on his PC. Same network, yet his ping is always perfectly 20-30. We also have friends all over the country, some not on the east coast, who also are on PS5, and they are all having the same ping spikes as us. We just wrapped up a night of matches. All five of us PS5 players ranged from 60 to 450 all night (and I’ve now been penalized for leaving matches that are unplayable). Our PC friend in the room with me and my husband? Perfect, the whole time. That really implies a PS5 issue.

Whatever you want dude. I have the same issue with 2 PCs but if you want it to be PS5 specific, I’ll leave you to it, lol.

I have done my RCA and I used to believe one of my PCs in the household would always get the better routing. That ended up being the case only most of the times.

I can only express what I’ve experienced, and the one PC in this house has literally never had a problem, but every PS5 that me and my husband and my friends in three other states play it on have this issue. :person_shrugging:
