Rendering device lost

It only occurs when I have google chrome up. I have no technical issues like this in any of the other games I play, just overwatch.

Hey TheOutcast,

Web browsers like Chrome can eat up a lot of virtual memory in the video card. We also suggest trying these steps when dealing with Rendering Device Lost errors.

I play games way more graphically demanding with no issues with a lot more programs running than just chrome. The problem is the game.

I had this before when I was playing on a laptop. Rendering device lost error popped up after 10+ minutes of playing. Other (more demanding) games seemed fine… Until… I turned on the GPU temp stat. Turned out my device was overheating which caused Overwatch to spit out errors. Other games didn’t but temps were still dangerously high.

Might be worth checking this too.

Agree with what Lightningman says. We may not be as graphically intense as many games you play, but we are heavily CPU/RAM demanding. This is because we put a lot of resources into positioning and sound, which are CPU heavy. A ram or CPU issue is usually the cause of a crash in just Overwatch. It can sometimes help to see what the PC is actually doing when you get a crash like this.

If you want us to give it another look with you, brab hwmonitor and install it. Then, launch hwmonitor and play a game until it crashes. Once it does, check the “max” column of your test for CPU/GPU overheating. If those are getting too hot, clean the PC and take it to a PC tech if that doesn’t fix the overheating - that’d probably mean some of the heat hardware needs maintenance or replacement.

If you don’t see anything, let’s snag some screenshots:

  1. Maximize the HWMonitor window and expand all the nodes on the left
  2. Scroll all the way up
  3. Take a screenshot with the Print Screen (prtscn) key
  4. Open up the program Paint and press ctrl+v to paste in the test
  5. Crop the screen if you want to only show the test, then save it as Test1.JPG
  6. Scroll all the way down, then repeat steps 3-5.
  7. Upload them somewhere like imgur and link us to the results. We’ll use those to look for more options.

If you have link errors, copy the code below, then copy/paste your link between two ` marks, it’ll break the link and let you post it. You can just copy paste everything in the box below and replace “Link goes here” with your link.

I just had 2 wins disappear from my rankings, I was around 2350, now I’m back down to 2300, because of this error. I also lost an endorsement point. Here’s the screenshot you wanted of the temps. I would like my SR restored as well as my endorsement rating. My temps are sitting around 40 degrees C playing without Chrome open this most recent time (difference is about a degree higher with chrome open)

The problem isn’t my PC, it’s with the game.

Here’s a screenshot with the program you sent me.

TheOutcast,

We do not restore SR for crashes, because regardless of reason, your teammates have to suffer the loss of a teammate when this happens. More information on this is here.

Whenever you’re troubleshooting something like this, you want to use a low stakes mode until you find the problem. If the issue is only occurring with Chrome active, it is impossible for it to be a game level issue. Further, the test you sent us is not the correct test and lacks 75% of the information I’m actually looking for. We can continue to help you troubleshoot this, but we need you to provide the requested information. Without it, we’re just going to be taking shots in the dark which will make this take longer for you. We want this to be fixed for you ASAP, so please provide the requested screen grabs of the HWMonitor report after you run it during a game which crashes.

Your best bet to avoid any type of penalty is to play custom games in the mean time while we figure this out with you.

so my teammates have to suffer because the game is defective, not my equipment, got it

I’ll grab a screenshot when it happens again, but according to the link you shared, which talks about temperature ranges for overheating (60 for CPU [mine stays around 40], and 80 for GPU [mine stays around 60]), with a whole bunch of programs going, I’m still within the correct temperature range.

Also, you ignored me when I said that it crashed with no other programs running at all, and the temperature screenshot I sent you was right after the most recent crash. The only thing I was missing in that set of screenshots was my GPU temp.

Based on the information I’ve been given so far, what I need to check and monitor for, my hardware is doing just fine. The software is not.

Here’s some more screenshots, this time in the background I’m running overwatch, warframe in a busy server (in case you’re not familiar with it, it’s much more demanding CPU and GPU wise), have a youtube video going on chrome all on the highest visual settings. These are all on the program you sent me, top to bottom.

The temperatures have gone up 3-5 degrees for the CPU, about 10 degrees for GPU (still within acceptable ranges, but I’m also pushing it much harder than I normally would).
