Firstly, I want to clarify that I’m not upset that I have a low ranking in this game. I’m not the best gamer, and that’s OK. However, the way that this game handles “wide” matches is fundamentally broken. I placed bronze 3, and my friend placed I think bronze 1. We play in a five stack, and over the past few weeks, our rankings have completely spiraled, so I am still bronze 3 but he is gold 5. We will win games against gold 1 players, and I will gain 3 percent to the next rank due to the game thinking my friends are carrying me or something(we have two bronze players, two silver, and one gold 5). He gains 35% to the next rank per win. The reason this needs to be changed is twofold:
- It doesn’t make sense to put players against similarly ranked or even much higher ranked teams, then make them gain less ELO by winning and lose more ELO by losing. If you’re going to put us against similar players, then why are you also punishing us for winning the games you’re putting us in? It doesn’t make sense, and it is extremely frustrating.
- It de-incentivizes people playing with their friends. We weren’t a “wide” group to start with, but marginal differences in our rankings have now spiraled into major discrepancies. I’m unable to rank up playing with my friends, because I gain at most 3% and lose about 10% per game, despite playing against better players than me, which is extremely frustrating. Also, now that we are a “wide” group, it is nearly impossible for us to find a game in less than 10 minutes.
I should also clarify, we only play ranked together. After this became an issue, I tried to play solo queue, but it is just simply not fun, and I don’t want to voice chat which makes it far harder to actually work as a team.

Until Diamond, your rank gained and lost per game is weighted by individual performance. You still gain SR for a win and lose for a loss, but the amount will differ from your teammates. The game is trying to move your friend out of your rank due to their MMR rising much faster than yours. The game sees a skill difference between you.
It can be frustrating for someone to be left behind, but it’s the best way to design the system. If you gained and lost the same as your group, it’d be really easy to boost lower-rank people to high ranks. Think of all the paid boosting that would happen. It’d also frustrating to get ranked way higher than you belong and be stuck with a huge losing streak once the group isn’t there to carry. The current way also helps get smurfs out of low ranks quickly.
It’s really frustrating, because I’m not even doing worse than my friends. I will get almost exactly the same amount of damage, kills, deaths, whatever, but still far less elo just because I’m already lower ranked.
I get it, but MMR tracks more than scoreboard stats. Things like accuracy, how quickly you perform actions, how frequently you use abilities effectively, and how quickly you move in general all matter. They’ll never give away the whole secret sauce behind MMR calculation, but it’s easy to see in action for any high rank player who starts an alt account.
It would only be giving you that little SR if it really thought you shouldn’t be in the lobby. I can’t play competitive with my friends either, which is a bummer, but it makes sense why it won’t let me. I just play comp solo now and Stadium/QP/MH with friends.
quickplay is whacked and of course crazy but i always believed ranked in this game was true and viable. i mean you really are the rank you are. of course you may float up or down a couple of ranks but i know that if i get to diamond on any role that is my limit lol. ive seen masters and gms play and I KNOW im not that level. even diamond for me is pushing it on any role
I am pretty confident it is entirely random.

I thought that individual performance/stats aren’t considered for rank in this game, at least that’s what I saw online. At any rate, other games don’t seem to have this issue, so it can’t be the best way to do this.

Do you have a match code we could look at, just to see whether there actually is a skill gap between you and your friend?
I’m not asking because I want to judge you or anything. I’d genuinely like to see how the system evaluates players within a match.
They are not anymore, Performance Based Skill Rating is not a thing anymore.
There are other factors like your perceived chances of winning vs that team and the other way around that affect it.
If you are in a wide match making group, members will not gain the same or lost the same, because their rank is not the same compared to the enemy’s.
What role did you play as… I think that might have something to do with it

You gain less % in bronze, because it’s a “bigger” rank.
Once you hit silver, you should be gaining the same amount as your friends.
Being in your group has nothing to do with this.
Not correct.
This has been removed from the game for quite some time now.

Looks like QP is a way to go for your group then.
Unfortunately, I don’t even think I can hit silver at this point. Over the past 40 matches, we have an 85% win percentage. I’ve gone down one rank, and my friends have gone up 2-4 ranks. I’ve noticed that these extremely marginal gains for me and extremely high gains for him only occur when we play as a five stack. Solo queue is miserable because I often get the most damage and least deaths but will get random unranked tanks that are just useless.
don’t worry , this game has no clue how to place ppl, i know someone who was placed in bronze despite the fact she stomp every game . the game don’t even boost her for making the climb less painful for her and the ennemy team . i have a friend , he gain 4-7% per win in bronze , i don’t even know how it’s possible
Yeah, it’s pretty awful. I’m not even mad I’m in bronze, I’m frustrated I can’t even progress whatsoever. I get rewarded for struggling against gold 1 players with a 2-3% ELO increase. Our main issue now is that our matches are so wide that it takes 15 minutes to queue every time now. Their system just flat out isn’t good mathematically. No matter how much we win, I’ll eventually just rank down all the way to bronze 5 and they’ll keep climbing. It seriously makes no sense.
Playing in a wide group also effects SR gain. Together with being bronze I can see why climbing takes a while.
But with a 85% winrate, you should definitely climb. Unless you start losing more once you solo-queue.
If you can’t get out of Bronze, I would recommend asking for help learning the basics of the game.
Just getting “most damage and least deaths” isn’t worth anything out of context.
This hasnt been a thing for like 6 years lol.

You haven’t been a thing for 6 years.
It’s true. I’ve turned into pure energy.

My winrate with solo-queue was similar even with randoms, but I also haven’t done any solo queueing in the past 40 games that I was talking about. Therefore, I have ranked down despite the 84% winrate. I feel like with that winrate I should at least gain one rank, and probably several. We had about a 15 game win streak as well.
I understand that it’s not just about deaths and damage. In solo queueing, I’ll have tanks that do crazy stuff. Almost all of them just go way too deep into enemy lines after our supports die, over and over. If we get out of sync after dying, no one even waits to go in and I’ll see supports just run in alone to a team fight. I play DPS, and I just can’t make up for that sort of thing no matter how much I strategize. I’m not saying I don’t make any dumb mistakes, but it’s pretty apparent that what they’re doing is objectively a bad idea.
IMO it’s not about learning the basics of the game for me, because when I get a rare batch of randoms that isn’t doing these things, we clear easily. Our group also destroys in the wide matches pretty often. Which means it really sucks to gain 3% elo in a landslide victory against people much higher ranked than me. I’m not frustrated I’m in bronze, I’m frustrated that it’s nearly impossible to rank up due to their mysterious hidden formula.
