Last night we played something like 8 games. Every single game had a modifier for unbalanced matchmaking, Expected, Uphill battle etc. This was during Drive event. This shouldn’t happen, ever.
And we had a positive winrate for the evening. I think we won 8 games and lost three. And yet, I got a reversal on the last loss. The losses weren’t in the row. It was two losses in a row, then a win, and then loss. Feels like Reversal is too aggresive.
And in general this season has been the worst for me and my spouse when it comes to comp. For the past 3-5 seasons we’ve played comp even a bit more actively, we’ve gotten to low-mid Diamond as a Support duo and stayed there comfortably. Now we both placed high gold-low plat on Support and highest we’ve gotten is Plat 3. I easily placed into Diamond 3 on both DPS and tank, my worse roles.
There is no modifier for such match making. This is just a misunderstanding of what they mean.
Reversal, Consolation, Uphill-Battle, and Expected all change the percentage of SR you gain. The unfortunate thing is, Matchmaker doesn’t track any of these, so you can have back-to-back-to-back Consolations, then a Reversal just out of horrible randomness.

Yeah. Because they are totally irrelevant to match making and are purely just a tiny adjustment.
They’ve been a thing since ow1. They just have labels now.
Just because they lower or add 2 percent doesn’t mean the 25 Percent they affect isn’t felt. There’s a bug in Comp right now. I’ve gone 6 losses all, Consolidation with 1 Uphill battle right after. Due to the 6 consolation, I started getting a Losing Trend, so the Uphill battle actually didn’t even reset the last loss. This is why it’s horrible to use Random chance to set up a win chance. You should be giving the loser queue only 1 time in a row. Afterward, add to the normal or Expected Queue. If a match cannot be made with you on a team that has a lower SR than the other, keep trying to find a match. Not screw you over and over.
That’s not a bug.
Every game, one team will have a slightly lower SR. But it’s all factions. Not something that actually indicates a difference in skill.
Hence the modifiers are actually only tiny adjustments.
Other than calibration, they don’t actually do enough to be of any note.
In fact, giving them names and displaying them is probably one of the worst changes they made to the game for OW2. Because people then start making theories and moaning… When they’ve been there for years doing the same thing.
They don’t even make sense. I’m Gold. And did two games that where ranged Gold to Diamond. I won both. And both games had expected. Like wtf? I’m Gold beating Diamonds. How bad were the Diamonds. To make the game have expected.
It’s not about you. Expected is because your team had a fractionally higher average MMR than theirs.
Basically meaningless, but players seem very hung up on them atm.
Why even have the words. Get rid of them. Of course we are gonna be hung up on it. It’s OUR progress bar. Not a TEAMS progress bar.
Agree.
The modifiers have existed since OW1. They never needed names. Purely because people aren’t generally that sharp and will always look for theories rather than answers. So you end up with places like this just full of utter nonsense.
My advice. Just skip past that page. If you’ve won, you know you’ll have moved up a little. Micro managing it is a waste of time and energy.
The rank range means the rank ranges of players on both teams.
It was not a gold vs diamond match. But both teams had players ranging from gold to diamond.
If you see “expected” all it means is that your team was predicted to win with over 52.5% probability.
I get that. But still I don’t want to be fighting Diamonds, at all.
Ok, well then you’d see that you saying you ‘beat diamonds’ was not really what exactly happened.
your team of gold to diamond players beat another team of gold to diamond players.
Now, just saying gold to diamond is one thing.
Was it a Gold 1 to Diamond 5 game?
That’s 7 divisions spread, ie, 2 divisions over one rank. That’s a bit different than Gold 5 to Diamond 1 – 15 divisions.
Ignoring the divisions can make it easily seem worse if you just consider ranks as some hard boundaries.
Ranges are for both teams, you team had a Diamond as well.
I’m Gold 5. So it was the lowest to maximum.
Doesn’t matter. I don’t want to be in games like that. That’s a joke. That’s QP garbage.
Are you playing 6v6/open queue? that’s always in wide queue format.
So it’ll have wide games quite commonly, reason being lack of players to keep queue times reasonable.
Yes. I don’t play 5V5. I join games within 1 minute. Glad I only play comp mode during Drives. I don’t need to find a game in 1 minute. If it’s gonna make a crap game like that. It’s no better than QP.
Yeah 6v6 is closer to quickplay in matchmaking. They probably try to match teams closer than QP does, but the rank ranges can be anything. And people can also group up without restrictions and you’ll be put together with those regardless if you’re solo or not.
But also because there’s less players than in QP, the matchmaker may still struggle quite a bit to make very “balanced teams”.
