Questions for girls who play Overwatch

How much harassment specific to your gender do you experience playing OW? Everybody gets chewed out for bad plays/performance/picks, so I’m just wondering how often you’re singled out specifically because of your gender, an idea of how unwelcome you feel because of your gender overall, is it mostly good or bad or a mix, is it regular or changed how you play, etc.?

My voice is very feminine so it’s easy to recognise that im a girl… I’ve gotten some creeps who made me really uncomfortable with their sexual comments about how they would touch me, one guy called me his girlfriend and said that he wanted to make babies with me. Then just the usual sexist jokes…

How interested would you be in playing professional leagues like OWL? How about other girls you know, how do they generally feel about it? If the opportunity opened up for you say tomorrow, would you realistically jump at the chance to play on a team? Why or why not?

I’m still underage so i don’t think i would have the chance yet. But yes, in future if i were good enough i would love to go pro. I have a girl friend who’s a big fan of seol dynasty.

Do you feel there is a stigma playing Overwatch as a girl? Do you feel any embarrassment or discouragement in your family or social circles for playing? Specific examples?

Yes, at least where i live a lot of people still don’t like when girls play video games. My dad doesn’t like when i play video games in general, since “it’s for boys”.

why do you think there isn’t as much female representation in owl? Is it general disinterest, the league structure, culture, stigma, genetics, a mix or something else? Note: I don’t think genetics has anything to do with it, but I’ve seen guys suggest it and back it up with specious cherry-picked data, and was curious nevertheless if any girls honestly believe there are physical differences that limit their representation in the competitive scene.

There aren’t as many girls playing ovw as there are guys, so ofc there are fewer “good players” who are girls. But sadly many girls get harassed for playing overwatch so that might drive them away from the game. Boys usually have been playing different video games since little so they might have more experience in fps than girls.

do you follow the competitive scene outside owl, and if so besides geguri which female players do you think could perform or could really excel in the owl?

Not really, i’ve heard bardcode is good but i haven’t seen for myself.

what do you think needs to happen for more girls to get signed into owl? Many guys suggest girls just need to step up their game and prove themselves and not make excuses, do you think the same way or do you think there are more significant hurdles to clear than just skill?

I think we, as a community, should be more welcoming and respectful towards female gamers. That way we could get more female gamers in general and therefore pros as well!
