PVE is officially dead. No more planned releases

While I do think PvE is basically dead, that is not an official blog or post.

I’m genuinely confused how this is news to anyone. It’s been literally a year since their last pve stuff and it was obvious it was over then:

EDIT: realized this was my prediction before but oh well

But just to throw a reminder out there, we literally got less OW2 content (pve was a stated reason for us getting less heroes at launch) for this much heralded pve content that they trashed OW1 for.

Big fail. I think they should take 2 out of the title.

So basically OW1 died for absolutely no reason…other than a new monetisation system.

We stopped balancing OW1, even attempting to fix its problems, releasing new heroes…for nothing.

2+ years of no content

So much wasted potential.

I feel like they could still release a story focused PvE though with no replayability. I’m sure people would be interested in getting immersed into the story of individual heroes that they’re a fan of.

Forget about the “replayability” portion of PvE, and just make lots of cool cutscenes with simple objectives to make you immersed in the story of each hero. Not sure why they haven’t done that already.

Always has been.

I can’t wait for the next generation of full-priced, live-service games, packed with battle passes, microtransactions, loot boxes (where allowed by law), add-on DLC and costly crossover content.

Overwatch was MORE because of the world and lore. That’s why it stood out and was a GOTY.
When you take that away, which they are now doing for good apparently, it’s just like the other dozen games that have different characters that you pick from and choose a costume before you go out and fight another team. This is what people mean by “it’s dead”. There’s nothing to care about anymore. The characters and world kept us caring about the game and we stayed engaged because we knew there was a story behind the interactions.

They are absolutely killing that, even if slowly, while claiming they “listen to us” and “value your feedback”, all the while they’re up to their knees on the sinking ship whose holes they themselves have created. The director will look at the holes he and his team punched and blame the players for it while the Overwatch IP drowns in obscurity from now on.
There may be a few more seasons while they slowly and clumsily release a few more heroes (ones without story and ones we really won’t care about because of that) and some more maps (which also lack that extra dimension)… but it’s not going to last and there won’t be an OW3.

You know this is just the end of it all right? By 2025 you won’t be launching OW anymore.

This does not justify an ENTIRE sequel, lol. This more like of a huge patch. Just like the implementation of RQ.

Wasn’t that the initial OW2 campaign? Just glorified archives missions that you had to pay money for. Nobody wanted to pay for that so I don’t see how doing that again would make a difference. Blizzard’s just going 100% all in on the cosmetic side of things now so expect more collabs in the future and get ready for your budget Fortnite/Warzone experience.

if theyre never gonna update it they might as well make it free

fortnite has stw but its not dead yet

maybe they will have to call it OW3 before that happens

The campaign doesn’t really focus on the lore of individual heroes. And you’re just fighting the same Null Sector robots over and over and over again. The cut scenes look great but again, it’s just a cut scene of a different story (Null Sector invasion) which focuses on too many heroes at once instead of focusing on the character development of individual heroes.

Another oversight they had is designing the story mission in a way where in order to have the optimal experience, you have to have 3 other players with you. Story mission being unfriendly to single player experience probably isn’t helping the sales either.

Last but not least, it’s way too expensive. Overwatch invasion itself costs only $5, but you can only buy it as a bundle which costs $15 but in AUD it’s actually $22.45. Almost $23 for a 1:30hr content doesn’t seem worth it for most Aussies.

The kind of story focused PvE I was talking about is single player campaign where you just focus on reliving the lore of single characters. Imagine being able to play sombra’s animated short but in first person for example with lots of cool cut scenes in-between.

that sounds cool but it would not have any replay value. i think what i would rather see is instead a story based system going from historic lore to current lore where you have separate hero progression levels for PvE to unlock abilities and loadouts, like they promised

I can’t believe they done this. I been waiting…and waiting For more story and it just end Widowmaker and sombra find Zendita and ends

YOU CAN’T DO THAT, YOU DON’T GET ME WASTE 15$$$ oh yes steam was poor choice ot add but IT WHAT YOU GET FOR SALE A 3 STORY HALF BAKE GAME, YA’LL PROMISE A FULL GAME, WHERE MY FULL PVE GAME I I BEEN WAITING YEARS FOR PVE, I HATE COMP, I HATE PVPE WHERE MY GOD DAMN PVE

and Know what… I keep asking hounding them until it happen case They can’t do this… Unless they Gonna save big I MEAN BIG UPDATE they can’t just cut that story with that… you can’t leave game live alone on PVP look at Gd Helldiver 2, that game thrives on PVE why don’t Blizzard see pvp is not only market where my story mission?!

Either way, there was likely no money to be made from this kind of project. I feel like the PvE was more of a fan service because the playerbase really liked the free version of PvE and the devs (or the executives) likely saw the potential in it generating money.

Who knows, maybe PvE content with high replayability is possible. But the scope of the project likely ended up being bigger than they expected and perhaps the executives realised that the cost of the project was going to be higher than RoI. I’m just surprised it took them this long to finally give up on PvE.
