Of course stereotypical representation can be harmful. That’s why many people advocate for REAL representation, not just throwing a white gay man in a show to put the minds at ease.
Uh…yeah. This really doesn’t follow the same logic though. There is a difference between fantasy and reality.
I don’t talk down to kids, but you do need to set the right expectations. If a child draws a picture, it’s better to say, “wow, that’s a good picture” not “wow, you should be an artist!”
Minorities don’t use fiction as a validation technique. It’s basic empathy: satisfying an audience hungry for experiences they can’t easily find.
For example, you know why black people went nuts for Black Panther? It’s because there is literally no other multimillion dollar superhero blockbuster starring that many black people and that actually speaks about the sociopolitics of blackness. Literally not a single one. We got to see black people who were ostensibly “black” represented with a gamut of personalities and moral outlooks, in a genre that usually doesn’t have us at the forefront.
No black adult relied on that film to say “dark skin is okay.” We know it is (society does not) and it’s insulting to suggest as such. We were just happy to be on stage for once.
In short, it’s like when Ana gets Play of the Game. A good Ana knows they’re good. However, an Ana getting Play of the Game feels that much more awesome.
Not necessarily. If you wish to do some research, you can learn some more on these subjects, but you don’t know about these things simply because they have never affected you nor anyone you know. And that’s fine, people have different life experiences. Until I started working in the funeral industry, I was not aware of the sheer scale of black youth gun violence in my city. Me not knowing that does not make me part of the problem - I don’t even own a gun! - but knowing what I do now (especially since these things can affect my family - my younger brother especially since he’s black) - has made me more aware and more receptive to people who come out and say these things are affecting their lives in a negative way.
Anyway, have a good rest of your day!
I think Pride flags are tacky.
Okay, this is exactly my point though. But don’t speak for everyone because there are people out there who trying to figure things out. This is why representation is good, but validation is bad. I think we agreeing more than you think.
This is a very reasonable request. I hope that some day soon, such parades won’t be necessary You have a great day friend! See you in another thread sometime!
Can confirm - Midwestener here, I live firmly in the bible belt lol. When I visited my gf in Vegas, I was so weirded out how she was not afraid of holding hands or kissing in public. It was simply Not An Issue for her, and it took me time to get used to that. She’s going to visit me in July, and I had to warn her to be careful. Maybe we can link arms on the street, maybe not. But public hand-holding (or… a kiss)? That’s out of the question.
Pardon me, but you can’t just say “Lgbt people in real life are just as many as straight people” then denounce my statistics when they disagree with your statement because of closeted individuals. Statistics are meant to take that into account. Also my stats represent the US, if you wanna fight them with stats from other countries be my guest
I’m actually concerned if you believe there is a 46%-43% margin of error.
Keep in mind a lot of people don’t actually do their own homework, they copy it from others, or even worse, copy it off of Facebook memes.
It does. People crave the ability and freedom to see themselves. Regardless of age. There are also LGBT youth - it’s important for young people who are questioning who they are to see someone like them positively portrayed in media - any media - that’s why I was so happy with Tracer’s reveal. It shows there’s nothing wrong with them.
Also… I hope you never work around children or have one of your own. If a child loves to draw, there’s nothing wrong with encouraging them. What if they do turn out to be an artist because of that early encouragement? What’s the harm in that?
What’s the harm in having representation in media, when it could help someone comes to terms with who they are?
Le sigh…
School funding is a system usually based around school performance. Worse performing schools get less funding, typically. This is exacerbated by the fact that a chunk of funding comes from the local community level. So poorer communities overall invest less in their local schools than richer communities. This isnt the result of lawmakers purposefully saying “Screw this group of minorities! We are racist!”, but rather a more fiscally pragmatic view of how to allocate state and federal money towards schools. (Mind you this isnt a 'rule either. Some states do inversely; they invest more money into the less viable schools. Unfortunately, the outcome remains fairly consistent, so its likely not 100% a funding issue but a bit more complicated.)
Furthermore, this issue of funding is made more complicated by bureaucracy. Misuse of funds and poor outlines for schools, particularly in more impoverished communities, tends to lead to even worse standards that keep a positive feedback loop going that lowers the quality overall. Culturally it matters too, as learned helplessness pushes down school quality and hurts overall numbers of how schools operate.
This, btw, is not only an issue within the black american community, but crosses virtually all racial groups and is more indicative of poverty and overcrowding in urban areas.
There are no observed laws on record currently that say property value has to drop because of Black Americans. Property value has a lot to do with a whole slew of issues, but its not because lawmakers are saying “If a black guy moves into this neighborhood, everyone loses 10-20% on their property value! Its the law!”
This is an issue more with poverty rather than race. Youll find the same issues in poor backwoods white neighborhoods too. As well as poor dense hispanic neighborhoods too. You see less of this in asian neighborhoods, but those typically tend to be also not impoverished.
Outdated beliefs that should be stripped are being stripped. That takes time unfortunately. Btw, Hospitals are less likely now to do this because of the legal liability. Nurses/Doctors found doing this lose their licenses. Hospitals get sued for doing this. It falls under unethical behavior.
Bad cops should be punished. Painting all cops as bad or racist is not constructive. While its true that there are cops who jump the gun (no pun intended), when discussing this topic, that facet is usually used as the end all be all. Meaning, out of nearly 1 million LEOs in the US, an extreme minority do terrible things with their power, and its now painted as “All cops are racist and attack minorities.” The actions of a few are often used to paint the many as terrible when discussing this issue. Its not addressing nuance or individuals, but rather using very broad brush strokes to define a whole profession as a problem. The black community and LEO issue is a really nuanced issue. Its not “Cops are racist! Theyre the issue.”
Saying that there is current systematic (that is government level) inequality being posed to black americans (or any group), is spreading a falsehood that actually perpetuates learned helplessness. Are there issues that could be addressed? Sure. Should we discuss those issues? Absolutely. Should we do what is best as a society to get things on the level so everyone has equal opportunity? Damn straight we should.
Is the US a cesspit of racism and bigotry specifically out to oppress black americans and other minorities 'cause of ‘rampant racism and white supremacy at all levels of government’?
Personally, gonna go with no there.
The studies and statistics actually don’t agree with you on that one.
It’s because closeted individuals should be taken in account in the phrase “lgbt people” so yes I am denouncing your statistics because it only represents a small part of the lgbt community. However, I can admit that my statistics were a little embellished and that perhaps a wider confidence interval would be more appropriate here considering the Earth’s population.
That’s why I’ll never use voice chat on Overwatch or any other game. I won’t even buy a mic or headset for this reason. I can’t speak one word without a bunch of hateful bigots immediately calling me a f----t because of my voice, which isn’t even that effeminate.
Why do we need these topics all the damn time?
If you don’t want to see them don’t bump them with pointless comments.
A pride flag player icon? I don’t think it will happen. Blizzard can’t even add more country flags to the game.
Ive seen a few of those ‘studies’ that make that assertion. They use cherry picked data from small or specified samplings and anecdotal evidence for their basis. They employ redefinition and broadening of terminology to help bolster their case.
The other studies that tend to get cited are reporting basic statistics which are then used as ‘evidence’ towards a hypothesis. The problem with those ones is they typically take the statistic out of context, or they go to what they consider the cause with the absolute dismissal of other viewpoints or counter evidence.
But hey, America is a racist hotbed cause ‘youve seen the studies’. Those studies are super right and non ideological. I mean look at all the evidence: we still have lynching, and segregation, and open, direct, to the point racism preached by politicians, government officials, officers, teachers, and the like. We still prohibit blacks from getting into schools or colleges. We still got Jim Crow. We still have cops using water cannons and dogs on minorities on a regular basis. All our movies, games, comics, cartoons, and media are white people being the heroes and minorities being the villains. No minorities can be good guys or even good characters. The k-cubed is still in the millions and make regular million man marches. We cheer when minorities get killed. We make sure that no welfare or aid goes to anyone whos darker than snow white. We can whip out racial slurs on the fly and there is 0 backlash.
Yeah, thats all happening in 2018. Right?
You mean the FBI’s study that white supremacists are the top terrorist threat in America? Yeah, real ideologically biased source there lol:

I’m going to expand on this post over time with other sources, but I’m at work now. In the meantime, I expect to see a crushing rebuttal of the data and conclusions from the liberally biased SJWs inhabiting the FBI:
