This single change would facilitate full stacks so much better. Game is just so much more enjoyable in a full group with everyone communicating and swapping if needed.
Not true at all, I shouldn’t have to plan comp games and make sure I have 4 other people. Not everyone plays OW several hours a day.
Thats why a clan system would be required. How hard is it to get a pick up group in a like minded clan?
You still need to communicate with a clan to make sure there are people online and ready to play. I like jumping into OW and playing a game or two. I don’t feel like logging in an waiting 20 mins for someone’s game to end and join them.
Bold of you to assume every solo player is actually playing the right way(when 99% of the time they aren’t and likely are 1 tricking some annoying niche hero that serves 0 purpose in OW2 at this point).
Clan rank is something they 100% need to do.
This was quite literally the original intent of the OW developers. They were going to have competitive be a full stack only experience. I am sad they did not go through with it as it made sense.
You know those rare games where both teams seem ultra coordinated, the game is close, everyone is trying their hardest, but having FUN at the same time? That is due to rare instances where teammates are talking and the comp they put together actually makes sense.
That was the experience we were SUPPOSE to have but instead they capitulated to people who wanted a solo option instead.
Why? Why did comp need solo’s? Why is quickplay not a good solution for people who don’t want to play in a pre-made in a team game?
Thanks to that last minute change we saw a rapid collapse of competitive integrity due to toxic behavior brought on by the frustration of 6 different people with different idea’s on how to play. All of which would have been avoid if people had to find like minded teammates they actually enjoyed playing with.
No, Full stack is not a stupid idea. It is in fact one of the best ways to protect the competitive scenes integrity.
That doesn’t matter. It sounds cool in theory, but it doesn’t work in practicality because not everyone has a full stack of friends and not everyone wants to wait for all 5 of their buddies to be available and wanting to play OW at the same time together.
If you’re playing with solo queuers that means you don’t have a full stack. Why are you allowed to play and not them?
It is a stupid idea to only allow it. Why do you not queue with a full stack? “All these random players are ruining my game, I wish none of us could play!” It doesn’t make sense.
There will probably still be trolls, but they will all be clanless or in the same troll clan together. At least the community will be able to police itself better, leaving the poor sports and throwers to wallow in the trenches.
It is practical. Has worked before. Will work again.
Shocker, My opinion was formed AFTER experiencing solo in OW. Almost like it’s a informed opinion.
See above. Played solo queue. Witnessed what it did to this game.
Played other games with stacks only. Was a way better experience.
Even if you DO play in a stack the solo experience still follows as you have to wait for a much longer time for a match (because the matchmaker tries to avoid placing stacks against less than stacks.) and even after that long wait it STILL can place you against solo’s whom you typically crush. Making it not only unfun but the MMR system recognizes that you were likely to win it and gives you almost no SR.
Now, on top of all that the ranking system encourages grinding. So since it takes longer to find games as a stack you get less games and tend to have to work harder at it.
Meanwhile, playing in a solo or duo you can grind games faster due to faster queue time and easier to “solo carry”. Meaning in a shared ranked pool the stacks are at a disadvantage in the climb.
So, when you stack you STILL have the solo experience harming:
- The quality of your games.
- Creating a disadvantage for the grind due to longer queue times.
- Creating a disadvantage for the grind due to reduced SR from beating non-stacks due to the MMR expecting you to win.
- Creating a dichotomy of choosing between the grind or a chance of having good matches. A well designed system gives you BOTH.
The matchmaker is from chess elo; a single player game. Overwatch was meant to be played as the same team (entity) every single time, like in chess. Of course this is not plausible, which is why we have team averages and a matchmaker that acts more like a teeter-totter than a ladder.
I mean, just flip the points I made though.
You don’t like the experience of solo queue? Don’t do it. You don’t like the experience of solo queue players interfering with your game? Don’t queue unless you have a full stack.
I don’t understand why your personal experience and preference is the reason to limit other players in what they’re allowed to do when you have the opportunity to play the game the way you want to play.
That’s why they have quickplay and arcade, for solo queue.
That doesn’t answer the question. Why do you have to enforce your preference on everyone else? If you don’t like less than a full stack don’t do it, if you don’t like being the odd man out don’t do it.
Comp is more regimented in SR in how it creates groups, why should someone who doesn’t have friends who play Overwatch and doesn’t do well in social scenarios with new people be disallowed? Because you don’t like it?
I think it’s a really selfish outlook, to be honest.
I don’t play in groups, but even I can see the value of prioritizing and encouraging teams and teamwork in a team based game. Comp is meant to be the serious mode, yet any clown can go in there and ruin the experience for the whole lobby with zero consequence. Stacks discourage and limit this to a large degree. To be honest I don’t really understand what you are fighting against here unless you simply enjoy the agency to troll.
It is called quality.
It isn’t solely for my benefit but the overall benefit of competitive. Having stricter requirements on ONE game mode isn’t the end of the world. Right now competitive is just quickplay +. The experience is not much different going from one to the other.
Not every game mode needs to be for everyone and even then there are plenty of resources that exist or can be created to increase access WITHOUT compromising the integrity of something that should have been for those who wanted to go ALL out in a team based environment.
There should have been space made so that a real competitive scene could have grown and flourished. Where teams could grow, reputations could be gained, and even use competitive as a means of finding new talent for what Blizzard so desperately wanted. A popular and engaging Overwatch League.
Instead it is just quickplay but you can earn purple points for gold weapons and you get a spray and icon each season.
It could have been something. It could have been a contender. But they threw it away.

It’s cool that you don’t, but if someone wants to only play in groups they can… wait for it…
FIND A GROUP! It’s a crazy idea, I know.
Letting people have their own agency to play the game how they want? Is it really that hard to understand? Are you that pretentious that you can’t contemplate someone having a different opinion?
Okay man.
I mean. Quickplay is full of people ranging from bronze to top 500, a litlte too often in the same game, with people testing out heroes they’re not comfortable with or just screwing around.
If someone wants their games to be taken more seriously they should have the agency to do so without having to wait for 5 of their buddies if they even have 5 buddies to play with.
Only allowing stacks isn’t going to all of the sudden bring in “integrity” or lessen toxicity or anything else you’re talking about. It would change the dyanmic of how it’s played, I suppose, if every single game was just full stacks? But that would severely limit people’s options to play the game.
Not every mode has to be for everyone, but comp is the most played and most appreciated mode the game offers, and it’s some pretty selfish and pretentious gatekeeping.
We’ll have to agree to disagree, I guess, since apparently if I don’t step in line I’m a troll.
I do actually understand where you are coming from. But don’t you think prioritizing solo-queue or discouraging groups kind of goes against the spirit of the game?
They’ve tried the inclusion angle and all we get is poor matchmaking while giving trolls all of the power. I think sacrificing some player agency for the overall quality of the matchmaker is worthwhile, personally.
You do realize that this wouldn’t be the case right?
Did you skip this?
Do you know why group finder failed so fantastically? Because solo still existed. Because grouping up in group finder meant you encountered all the issues I listed still because the overall match maker favors solo play.
Now remove solo play. Require stacks and suddenly the group finder starts working better. Not only because everyone who does not have anyone to play with is using it. But also because near full stacks who are looking to fill in the absent slot one of their friends left.
Which means people would have innately experienced coordinated play. They would have learned how to play as a team from the get go. Even better, those who “don’t have friends” would have MADE friends.
What a stacks only system coupled with a group finder does is create something that has higher integrity play due to a much higher chance of learning coordinated play and finding others you wish to play with long term.
No, what is gatekeeping is not creating a space for those who want a team experience. Every space in overwatch is currently tailored for solo play but you want to claim that it is gatekeeping to want ONE mode that is different.
Also, Incorrect on comp being the most played. If memory serves the dev’s not to long ago stated that quickplay had the largest population by far.
Not my words. I don’t consider you a troll. I consider you somewhat narrow sighted and lacking in the big picture side of things but it is an overall good discussion.
Don’t mistake my passion for the topic as anger with you.
