I like the synergies between different tanks - its fun working together and setting things up. Zarya bubble, grav/bomb, Ball slam, hook, shatter - they’re all fun.
Plus, you get to protect each other AND your team - if i see someone needing help, i can make a play or help and know there’s a chance the rest of the team be completely unprotected.
If i mess up as the ONLY tank, there’s nobody left to take up the slack and protect the team. That extra pressure feels bad.
Plus, i like playing ball. He’d make a really crappy solo tank.
If you’re talking the start of a fight, sure. If you’re talking later in the fight, there’s usually enough chaos/fragging going on you can potentially pull things back.
If you lose your tank 5v5, you have no tank. Your team is significantly weaker.
The idea of switching to 5v5 seems to be based on queue times and not because of fundamental balance issues. The changes to tanks would have to be so drastic OW wouldn’t be the same game anymore.
It’s essentially Blizzard saying that if you like how current tanks play too bad, DPS queue times are more important.
I want to try 5v5 out in Experimental. I liked being free to bubble DPS and supports as much as I wanted in 132. Tank synergies are strangling sometimes, feeling that bubbling my co-tank is the correct play 90% of the time is less fun.
If nothing else, it’d be a cool Arcade mode. Move QPC adjacent to QP, allow QPC to continue letting wins contribute to Arcade lootboxes, and tighten up its matchmaking. Then 5v5 could sit in QPC’s old spot.
They tried 132 a while back, buffed up all the tanks and for an experimental. I wasnt a huge fan, since the tanks were superpowered and even then you couldnt protect your team (specifically healers) properly.
I play ball. Idc what the other tank is doing. The only time “tank synergy” is even present… is in a scrim or owl match. In ladder, the closest thing you’ll get there is rein/zarya and honestly… toddlers could play those two.
If you’re not able to play without a shield, it’s not the game that needs changes. Its you. If I had three dps and 1 support to work with… I wouldn’t be on a shield. I’d be picking off the biggest threats for my team
To your point…there’s good reason to believe they are moving the tank role away from the classic “tank” trope…which can very easily shift the pressure situation the other guy mentioned
Personally I have zero issue with solo tanking as is (or ever)…I find it a bit harder to play solo support…but tanking? Never
The caveat there being that if I do that it’s almost exclusively with a barrier tank…So I’m curious to see what they are doing if they move tanks away from that
For example ball is really the only non-barrier tank I’ve ever considered solol tanking with… then again his he really tanking?
Oh boi, I didn’t expect for people to actually engage in conversation here.
For me what it comes down to (as other people have already mentioned) is the tank synergy aspect of the game. What draws me to Overwatch is the strategic, competitive aspect in which good teamwork and communication is being rewarded.
Yes the tanks could feel a bit tankier, but in a 5v5 thought experiment that would drop from 2 tank players down to 1, I personally (as a tank player) would be missing one of the most fun and collaborative aspects of that overwatch gameplay that I have come to known and love.
I’m always open for changes and for the devs to try new things. I’m also aware that after 5 years of classical overwatch some people are down for more radical changes and just want to bring havoc as a all powerful solo tank to their games.
But for me, it would simplify the game, make it less collaborative and less fun to play. If I want to solo carry a game - I’ll queue dps. If I want to experience peak competitive overwatch, rally the troups and pull of incredible plays through synergy - I play tank and most importantly with another tank player.
A 5v5 with a solo tank means mega buffing tanks, possibly more pressure on all to preform better and I can tell you right now. I can bet Mei will become a must pick DPS considering her off-tank playstyle, especially with walling enemies off.
First gutting the tank role, then reducing the players in said role to soloplayer who’s required to essentially lead the team and bear the brunt of everything (including being pigeonholed to reinhardt because he has a shield and shatter which requires a barrier to counter and rest don’t) is not going to make tank players more willing to play the role.
There’s a reason why solohealing was a miserable existence and why they’re going to give healers in ow2 some self-regen so they aren’t reliant of secondary support peeling.
Solotanking is the same thing, except a whole lot worse.
