Players need a TRUE Rank rather than 9 different ranks

When somebody asks you “what rank are you”, you can never just say “(insert rank)” because there are way too many caveats you have to consider.

For example

  • What role
  • Open queue or Role queue
  • 5v5 or 6v6
  • Competitive or Stadium
  • Console or PC
  • Combined rank or role specific rank

All these issues mean that if you’re placed in every single possible ranked system, you can have 9 ranks to answer the “what rank are you” question with

A few ways I’ve thought to fix this and therefore give ranks actual meaning are as follows

  • Only have 5v5 or 6v6 available one at a time, possibly alternating every season
  • Do the same as above for Role Queue and Open Queue
  • Consider making the “combined” rank a lot more prominent throughout the games UI to indicate its significance over the others, giving a clear “true” rank and relegating the role specific ranks to just a third of your overall rank (this would also encourage more hero and role flexibility)
  • Consider ranked cross-play between PC and console, other notable games allow it, but Overwatch doesn’t. Currently even in unranked console players have their aim assist disabled when a PC player is in the lobby which I think is entirely unnecessary as other games with more powerful aim assist don’t even do this

Why would you do all this just so people could “answer questions” easily?
Makes little sense to me to disable features in game just so people can have easier discussions or whatever.

No. Well, as an opt-in, sure, pc players need to have option to opt out of it.
Crossplay does have aim assist enabled these days. Ximmers run wild in crossplay qp lobbies.

Crossplay should never be forced on players.

Sure, locking players out the mode they want to play for months.
Surely this would be very healty for the game.

Open queue 6v6. The only rank that matters.

Or you could just say what your rank is

ask more specifically? We usually mean role q as open Q i am a t500 while a role q plat player.

its often role q main role.

nobody I ever met asked for open q rank, as its just your ability to select a tank or support hero.

My point isnt just so people can answer questions easier its that the difference between a high rank and a low rank diminishes when there are so many different modes you can get different ranks in. Someone can be bronze tank, support and dps but top 500 open queue

I dont see how that is a problem and instead see it as a good thing.

Someone is good at playing a certain game mode or role, and not so good in others. That’s how it should be.

ok thats where we just disagree then to be honest.

i would like it if your rank encompassed you as a player of the game, like other fps titles. not player of 1 hero/role or 1 mode

what would be the purpose for it? If youre not as good of a tank as you are a support, the ranks represent that discrepancy. That’s how it should be.

it just makes more sense to me. someone who is a “really good overwatch player” should be really good at all roles and modes, but instead we are in a world where a “really good overwatch player” just has to master 1 hero

idk why that is a problem. if you’re good at 1 hero you’re good at 1 hero (and that role then).

If you want “only one rank across all roles” then stick to open queue. You have the option. Why you want to take game modes etc. away from others, i dont understand.

And even in open queue, people could one trick and still be very high rank.

And then if you consider that, open queue ranks are less accurate when you have people who just play one hero & people who play all roles / heroes both having just a single rank.

Role queue fixes this problem.

Just tell them your highest rank. Why would you tell them anything else…
