PICK a rOuTe BLIZZARD

Both can work, but the generalists need to be generally weaker than a specialist in their specific niche. Same idea as spreading oneself too thin.

Problem with this game is that niche heroes are so niche and generalists are so good that you usually just want the general hero every time.

Of course on the flip side, player perception is a really powerful spell. At this point, people have gotten so used to seeing niche heroes getting played outside of their niche (and doing poorly) that when the proper situation finally pops up, they’re too scared to use the specialized hero because they just assume they’ll lose like all the other times. Likewise, people see generalists used a ton, and are used to playing as or around them that they just use them as a safe default. This leads to overusing generalists and underutilizing specialists due to no direct problem in balance alone. Everyone could be perfectly balanced, but you’d still see a major skew just because people like ā€œsafeā€ picks instead of risking misreading a situation.

They probably have the same number of playerbase right now with how many people left OW, if you remove from the equasion EVERY Smurf account and the hundred thousands banned for toxicity that keep buying the game for some reason (a friend of mine got banned 3 times already and he doesn’t appear he want to stop beign toxic for no reason)

Not to mention Paladins is free for everyone to try. They also pump tons of new heroes that are fun to play and can be played in tens of different ways thanks to the Card system that let you choose in which part of the kit you want to shift the power.

The only thing that doesn’t have to be honest is the graphics and to me it’s the only turnoff and it is so big (for me, for what my tastes are) that i don’t play it just because of the fantasy setting and because of how ugly the maps look.

But yeah it is the best hero shooter Design wise. It is a blast to play compared to OW minimalistic kit designs.
Enemies have too many barriers? Buy the ability that increase DMG vs barriers.
Enemies have too much healing? Buy the perk that make enemies recieve less healing when damaged.

You are not receiving healing? Your character is a flanker? You don’t want to depend too much on the team? Paladins has auto regenerative Health after few seconds out of the battle.
You don’t like walking more than you fight like in OW sometimes happens? There is the mount to come back quickly from the spawn.

And those are just examples. OW has a lot to learn from Paladins tbh.

Overwatch has the same numbers with Paladins? Overwatch has at least 15x-20x concurrent players than Paladin does.

The original cast are the ā€œStrong nicheā€ characters.
Then they decided to Add-in 10 Jack of all Trades heroes with little to no weaknesses.

I don’t really care about the numbers, the dude asked and i gave my perspective.
It’s undeniable though that OW playerbase is falling especially if you don’t count the infinite smurf accounts.

I was pointing out the paradox of a SH with millions times the budget of an indie SH, with a game that has so much potential (OW) is outclassed (design wise) by Paladins

Oh, well you mentioned the numbers so I thought it was very inaccurate.
I mean even tf2 has 7-8x the population paladin does, you can just look at steamcharts, the game is not up there with the big boys… Smite is a more successful title.
And Hi-Rez is far from an indie company as far as I’m aware of.

I don’t see how literal point and click heroes that don’t care about maps and compositions to get value can be specialists

Honestly I think Hi-Rez is the reason the game isn’t more successful. Hi-Rez doesn’t have a great rep and I have seen many say that they want nothing to do with it simply because it was Hi-Rez. It is a shame though, I think Paladins does many things better than OW, but because of the publisher and the lack of polish I dont think the game will ever see the success it could have without Hi-Rez being attached.

Ow 2016 was clearly more on the niche side of things

Reworks and new heroes definitely favored generalists

So there’s the answer pretty much.

Blizz, for better or worse, at least seems to want the latter.

there doesnt need to be one type you can have generalists and niche heroes at the same time you just need the niche ones to be able to do their niche better than a generalist but to be worse then the generalist at other things.

Not to mention the bug where 90% of the time she isn’t able to headshot frozen targets.

Yeah, this is probably the reason Jeff mentioned that he wants to push it more towards an FPS than a MOBA going forward.

Barely though. People are taking what Jeff said waaaay out of context. It as a more a ā€œlittle less moba, a little more fpsā€. People expecting a sea change are in for a major disappointment. I think most of the changes will affect tanks for more DPS quite honestly.

no, they’ve clearly moved towards everyone being generalists more and that’s a good direction for the game, they just haven’t been very consistent till recently, especially with the tanks. now they finally seem like they aren’t ok with some tanks being never playable, so this looks like the game is moving in the right direction.

Care to give an example? I don’t do point and click on console, so I don’t know what you mean tbh.

EXCEPT low ranks exist. Sym, Bastion, Pharah, etc are all more than fine in ranks below Diamond and would be broken if you gave them buffs to balance them at higher ranks.

I kind of think for some sadistic reason the devs enjoy this frustration and toxicity and promote it as at some level it seems to keep people engaged.

It’s not the first game, where you have to go against dev’s wishes to enjoy playing it.
