OWL Rules Question Re: Peripherals

Me and my fiance are wanting to get into competitive play in Overwatch, potentially going into the OWL eventually. He has a history of controller gaming and I’ve done both controller and keyboard/mouse gaming, but we’re both interested in trying a hybrid approach using a mouse and this Griftr Solo Gamepad for the left hand instead of a keyboard:

Would this be disallowed by OWL rules, or any other major Overwatch competition?

I think you should just focus on climbing out of bronze before you start buying things to play in the OWL

  1. Not helpful, in the slightest.
  2. If we’re going to climb out of bronze, we need to be able to carry teams, which means we need the best setup we can get to maximize our efficiency. Neither of us can play our main characters very well with a keyboard, but aiming with a controller is considerably harder than a mouse.
  3. If we get used to playing like this now, but a year or two down the line find out it’s banned in tournaments, we’re going to have to unlearn everything we’ve done and relearn how to play with a keyboard instead.

Just learn mouse and keyboard instead, it’ll most likely be better in the long run and you won’t have to worry about something like this

You probably won’t get a solid answer here because the OW team avoids these boards like the plague.

As far as gearing up for the OWL, I say follow your f*n dreams. Go all in and make it big, bronze or not right now. Everyone starts somewhere. Best of luck to you both.

Maybe in my fiance’s case, it would be better in the long run, but I have no idea how Hammond could possibly ever be better with WASD than a joystick.

Controllers are a lost worse for straffing, and analogue isn’t very important. There’s a reason analogue controllers aren’t very popular. Also not to mention you could bind keys however you wanted, and you’re gonna be playing more than just Hammond

Eh I kinda figured. I was hoping maybe an actual league player might be hanging around who’d know, though.

And hey, thanks. We decided to do our placement matches for this season yesterday and that turned out to be a terrible mistake, lmao.

SR is more so determined by how active you are. If you want to climb, just play consistently and be patient, it’s a tremendous grind. If your goal is to improve, deciding to play and be active is ALWAYS a good decision, regardless of how well your teams do. Remember, as a duo, you only make up for approximately 33% of your team, so there’s only so much control you have.

I can’t very well bind keys to different magnitudes of directions, though. And sure, I’m not always going to be playing Hammond, but I definitely don’t want to cripple my main by trying to play such a movement-heavy character with a fraction of the directional control.

@SerSalty Well I’d played mostly over a year ago solo, and even being consistently active, I was just consistently going down. Every loss counted for more than two wins towards my SR, and my ratio certainly wasn’t better than 2-1 since, well, solo queues are a death sentence, apparently.

You won’t cripple your main. Also WASD is significantly faster as long as your keys have ok travel time. Hammond won’t be affected by WASD

Have you tried Hammond with a keyboard?

Seeing as I almost exclusively use keyboard, yes. Just like almost everyone on PC

Have you tried spinning on a payload as Hammond with a keyboard? Or aiming a swing/piledriver combo?

Once again, yes and yes. It’s harder when you aren’t used to it but gets so much easier. You wanted feed back you got it, don’t talk to me as if I haven’t done the most basic of things. I have over 800 hours on this game using exclusively mouse and keyboard, and having started with controller when I initially started. If you don’t like people’s answer who genuinely have experience then don’t ask

Coming from a background of controller fighting games and using keyboard for mobas. I could definitely see how an analog fight stick w/mouse might be the best controller for Hammond. Gives you more nuance controls.

I’m surprised you say Hammond and not doom fist out of everyone in the game. Though how much would something like that even make a difference? Especially when she is talking about going to OWL

I didn’t ask for feedback on whether or not Hammond is a good idea with keyboard vs. controller, I asked for feedback on whether or not a gaming keypad or similar peripheral would be banned in OW tournaments. And sure, you have 800 hours on this game, but you have 8 minutes with Hammond. Literally any other hero, sure, keyboard’s great. Hammond? No, not really. You can’t roll your finger around on WASD like you can with a stick. The simple spin motion of a joystick is awkward and certainly hard to keep up with a keyboard, to say nothing of swinging around a corner, or through a window. A lot of the moves that require a lot of finesse for Hammond would be so much harder with WASD.

Definitely not a huge deal. But if they would already be more comfortable with that and knew it would be allowed, no reason not to. Not necessarily advocating for it. But I just wanted to back them up that the question/request is reasonable.

And for saying doomfist, having those nuance controls matters more the faster their default movement is. All of doomfist is controlled by looking at the proper space, so mouse controls it all.

Hammond didn’t feel like a struggle at all. And I’ve already explained why it’s a bad idea. And they really aren’t hard at all, the inability to straffe with other heroes seems far more important than just having to spin, get more experience with a mouse and keyboard before saying it seems harder. It isn’t hard, it’s fluid and crisp.
