OWL desktop player not being updated?

Why is that OWL desktop thing being left to dust?

I remember watching the World Cup LIVE when it was first released.

Now it only has the first weekend matches. Takes long to update, I don’t even know if it’s going to be updated. I really like watching the games there over and over, going through many POV’s. Please give it some love?

Yes, the World Cup has been shown live on the viewer. However, OWL matches have never been live. It is termed the “replay viewer” because the matches available are always at least a week old. As far as I recall, this has always been the case.

I would assume this was because watching POVs live was something we had to pay for with all-access from Twitch. So now that this isn’t available, I’m with you that it would be nice to have some way to get those, but we have to settle for watching week old replays. IMO, there are worse things.

Matches hapened like 12 hours ago… Calm down. Dust isn’t even forming this fast.

Probably two reasons:

A) Since Blizzard doesn’t necessarily have strict control of the venue and establishing a sufficiently robust network feed to support live replays for however many people watch it that way likely entails a lot of effort, it’s easier and more streamlined for them to upload the match replays after the homestand is concluded rather than sink the effort into creating a live feed. They can do it for the World Cup because it’s prepared well in advance in a venue Blizzard has a lot of control over, and there are far fewer outside parties to wrestle with than with OWL.

B) there may be some fear that the replays could cannibalize the monetized views from streaming platforms. IIRC the Season 2 replays had a fairly sizable release delay as well, so the way OWL is handling the match replays isn’t new.

Also, a delay of 1 week is not that bad.

good points, thanks …

It was literally updated the day before OWL started

also prior to that update it was named “Overwatch League Postseason”, but then when it got updated the name also changed from “Overwatch League Postseason” to just “Overwatch League”.

This is because the postseason was a separate stage from that of the other stages and each stage last year played on a different patch and never changed from that patch.

This year is going to be different, major patches will roll out to the League LAN client approximately one week after the release of the live client. This means only matches from the most recent patch will probably be accessible from the league replay viewer up until the patch is updated. so if you want to save any recordings from the replay viewer be sure to do so promptly before that match is gone for good.
