Ow2 needs to just drop its casual scene at this point

No we don’t.

Too late for that when marvel rivals has already filled that hole for many people now. If they wanted to go that direction they should have gone that way ages ago. They have taken too long to go that way. Its their own fault for waiting 2 yrs of people complaining to start listening

What do you think will happen? They revert back to the more fun arcade-y ow1-esque gameplay in 6-12 months from now after taking months to make the required changes and then what?

Already No one cares. No one is going to care about that in a years time. No one is coming back to this game just for casual fun. They have marvel rivals to play now which fills that desire. Which has more casual friendly monetisation. More casual friendly systems like teamups and no restrictions on grouping. Increased content cycle with more heroes coming out a faster pace vs ow2.

Marvel rivals already has the casual hero shooter playerbase locked in. Overwatch dropped the ball too many times. People do not trust the ow2 devs after being lied to repeatedly. A new game comes out, is very transparent, very player friendly and seems to appeal to what people have wanted ow to be for years. No shocker people have flocked over there and have no interest in coming back.

THATS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU STAB YOUR PLAYERBASE IN THE BACK. NOT ONCE, NOT TWICE BUT 3 TIMES IN RECENT YEARS. Every time they have been betrayed by the devs it has desensitised them to the thought of just leaving the game entirely to the point people are happy to forget this game ever existed.

Best ow2 can do is focus on the playerbase marvel rivals hasnt capitalised on which is the competitive playerbase. Marvel rivals has hero bans and a tournament system already at launch. SOMETHING HARDCORE OW PLAYERS HAVE ASKED TO HAVE FOR YEARS!!! Luckily marvel rivals is more of a casual experience so their ranked scene is pretty meh. The ow2 devs need to realise theyve lost those casual players, see there is an opening for those hyper competitive players and run full steam into making a game that will attract those players

omigosh NO that’s a terrible idea

What so you want them to do then?!!!?

Cus what they are currently doing isnt working!!!

Trying to go backwards and be more casual is just going to kill the game because all the people that are attracted to that have quit

Only choices they have left are
• continue appealing to no one and losing all their players. Who is legit enjoying ow right now??? No one wants to play. Both casuals, cus marvel rivals is better, and comp players, cus the ranked system sucks. No one is having fun rn
Or
• focus on being more competitive than marvel rivals. So marvel rivals is the casual arcadey hero shooter, whilst ow is the competitive hero shooter.

They are the only 2 options.

What???

You think it’s a bad idea to cater to the 1% of your player base? You a crazy person!! (/s)

Overwatch should just say “screw it!” and give every hero their old kits and buff every hero to their strongest states - apart from the extremely problematic ones like Brig, etc.

So many heroes have had their hero identities watered down or ruined in order to make them more competitively viable. Who cares? Just make them all whacky, unique, strong and fun. Then just let the chaos ensue.

OW has the advantage of being the higher quality product.
It can easily get back all the casual players if actual effort is put into it. But that is the issue - Blizzard’s unwillingness to invest in anything that is not a direct profit.

The only reason MR even has this success is thanks to the negligence of Blizzard towards OW.

Its likely much higher than 1% now btw. You are using outdated stats

Considering a mass amount of casual players have left to go play marvel rivals, competitive players definitely make up a larger % of the remaining players

I definitely think they need to do more with with at least their in-game lore and world building and try to incorporate that more with the maps and hero releases instead of adding random heroes with disconnected stories and random world locations.

Marvel Rival’s also made me question OW’s release cadence in hindsight. While I don’t know if Marvel Rivals will keep up the pace in subsequent seasons, I still wonder if OW could have also released multiple hero releases at once, or were they just milking it?

Because at this rate, if MR releases 4 new heroes (and rumored 2 more heroes for 6) next season, then say 2-4 more heroes in S2 (who knows), they would have already caught up to OW hero numbers and in a year surpass it easily with popular marvel characters.

I will say to be fair maybe the workload and quality of creating and animating heroes could be arguable higher for OW (for example victory animations work on every skin) and while idk how realistic that is but obvious it would be cool to see a more lively game with more characters added.

Well, maybe. You could be right. You also could be wrong.

Regardless, it doesn’t make sense to cater to a player base that has been smaller for 8 years. And honestly it seems unlikely that the ratio changed much because MR released, and a few players left to play it (for now).

Totally agree.

Joeverwatch needs to exercise the competitive advantages it currently has.

You ask anyone who isn’t switching to Rivals why.

Reasons:

  1. game is not optimized, Overwatch runs smoothly with less jank
  2. MR is not balanced well, Overwatch is
  3. OW has better designed maps with less dead ends and better thought out power positions
  4. first person makes for more consistency shooting targets without the wonky 3rd person hitboxes
  5. slower gameplay more focused on team tactics

Joeverwatch needs to play to those strengths because it’s going to be very difficult to play to the competitor’s advantages.

Nah i completely disagree.

Ow2 isnt even a high quality product lol.

Maybe 5 yrs ago you could say that. But nowadays the game has become so tarnished in recent years.

How can you say a game that releases heroes like mauga as high quality lol. How many patches do we have to go back and forth with tanks being useless and broken? Game is a dumpster fire.

Ow has burned its players too much. Its way easier for people to quit now and people have taken the chance and jumped. Even ow content creators have jumped ship. Marvel rivals is the first true game that has stolen ow content creators. There have been games that take them away for a week perhaps. But never a month

Quality means nothing when all overwatch means to most old players is reminding them its a steaming pile of dog doodoo.

The thing is also, no, they haven’t, lol. They have more players now than they did this same time last year, even after losing some to MR (according to steam).

And I think with the season 9 patch (which arguably catered to casual players the most), they got their largest boost in players that they ever have. It would be REALLY stupid of them to ignore that and just try to start catering to competitive players only. But, I guess that’s why they are game developers hired by one of the top gaming companies, and some of the people on these forums cough cough, are not.

literally droping the casual scene is what killed overwatch, forcing a competitive scene and balance the game around what the players of th league were doing is what killed the game, sideline casual scene is what killed the game not making cool and fun things casual players want like more events with new modes and the story mode

Literally this. Anyone who thinks differently is just dumb. No other words.

Play to your competitors weaknesses. Dont have an ego and think you can beat your competitor at their own game.

Marvel rivals saw ow dropping the ball on the casual hero shooter market and has capitalised on it and take most of ows casual playerbase. Thats happened. No going back on that.

Best thing the ow devs can do is realise theyve lost their casual playerbase and look at what marvel rivals does poorly. Clunky unoptimised, poor competitive scene. And so make ow2 the best game on the market at being that hyper competitive hero shooter.

That is the only real option. Only other option is continue on the directionless path the game has been on going nowhere.

No one is playing ow2. Most people have quit. No casual player is playing ow2 with its forced RQ, leaver penalties, automated report system, sbmm etc. They have gone. Design the game on who are left. The hyper competitive players

OW2 may not be but OW1 is and that is 90% of the game.

It is but that is not unfixable if the devs put the effort.

Balancing is a skill issue that will never be fixed with the current balance team. They are not good enough to make it work. Also hero design is a whole different story.

It has burned them because has nothing new and good to offer, which is what made jumping ship to MR so easy.

I think it’s a bit too hard at this point. Competitiveness requires three important pillars : Balance, fairness and skill expression. But they are simply ignored in the core design of many characters. In other words, the casual parts in this game are hidden in the character designs. Idk how many characters should be reworked completely for the purpose and I’m afraid some characters even need to be removed.

OW cancelled/reverted many things like PvE, map, format, patches and etc., but what they never did was to remove characters, even if it ruined the whole competitive scene.

The devs were more worried about roasting their boss on twitter about return to work policies than making that PVE they promised.

I was with you until right here.

No, they should shelve their Comp scene and focus on the casual players.

Comp players make up a super small % of the playerbase and it makes no sense to cater to them.

Casual players are what are going to keep the game going.

What do you mean? It was all Bobby’s fault
