I think it was more of a case of “funny flavor” for him being an old man and not as much lore-intensive fact.
The same way they make him groan when you charge into an object like he just hurt his old-man back or knee

I just find it fun to imagine different heroes on cellphones; what kind do they have, does anyone play games
Is anyone wearing wireless earbuds and listening to music mid-fight?
Does McCree or someone else order uber-eats or grub hub during long missions and have food delivered?
Does Pharah have a go-pro style attachment she uses when flying?
Does Reaper and Widow sit there on cells in a wait queue calling in to Talon HQ to request dropship or a sick day?
Does Sojourn facetime with her dog Murphy during breaks?
Do Ana, Rein, and Torb have group calls and mess up speech to text and do other boomer stuff with theirs?
Do Brig and Dva share memes with eachother?
Where does everyone STORE their cell during battles? We don’t leave our CHAIRS without having our phone generally, so there’s no shot heroes wouldn’t have them on their person during missions.
Are there ultra durable screen and cases in the future?
Do they all pay for wireless providers or does OW have an organizational business plan for everyone and it’s taken out of their pay?
These are things I need to know

Sigma and a Doomfist are way more powerful than they are in game.
It’s all just fantasy based on the lore. I know. It’s confusing. And maybe they changed their mind since they said it. I don’t know.
