Overwatch Streaming Rewards Guide & Troubleshooting - CLOSED

Welcome to the Overwatch streaming rewards guide. This forum post will provide key facts about watching official esports and content creator streams to earn Overwatch in-game items including sprays, skins, Overwatch League tokens, and more! This guide will be updated periodically for active promotions and instructions on how to earn each reward.

This topic is now closed for 2021

With the conclusion of the 2021 seasons of Overwatch Contenders and Overwatch League. I will be getting this topic closed as most of the information will now be obsolete. When we get closer to starting up 2022 Overwatch League or Overwatch Contenders seasons, I will get a new topic going. If any of you have any remaining questions, please start your own topic and if I see it I will try to answer, but please understand there is nothing I can do at this point about any missing rewards for watching rewards-eligible livestreams.

Thank you everyone for your support and feedback as it helped me and Blizzard make earning rewards for supporting Overwatch esports easier. Cheers!

TROUBLESHOOTING WITH EARNING TWITCH DROPS

IMPORTANT This promotion has now ended, and this troubleshooting guide is no longer effective to resolve any lost Twitch Drops, however, you can use this for your reference to prepare for any future Overwatch promotions on Twitch.

Perform the following steps in order to see if you can correct any possible errors. Try testing when you complete one more or of these steps. Remember to check the Overwatch Game Client to see if you earned the rewards in the hero gallery. Any earned drops will have no in-game notification or show the icon for the items indicated once they are earned.

  1. Verify you are signed into your Twitch.tv account and that your Twitch account is linked with your Blizzard Account.
  2. Some countries, (specifically those sanctioned by the United States) may not be eligible to earn drops from any Twitch drop promotion.
  3. Verify that you are watching an eligible stream by looking for the Drops Enabled message below the title of the stream. Please note the title in the stream description is NOT an indicator that this channel has drops enabled.
  4. Make sure that your Twitch account is showing that you are active online (green light) in your Twitch profile.
  5. If you are a console player, verify that your BattleNet account is linked with your Console Account.
  6. Try clearing out your web browser cookies or other cache files (remember to sign back into twitch.tv on the web browser).
  7. If you use any Ad blocking pluggins or software, please disable it entirely for the duration of the broadcast (don’t just provide an exemption to the site).
  8. Make sure that Twitch.tv is not muted in Google Chrome. Open a tab and navigate to Twitch.tv, then right click the tab of the site on the title bar of the window, in the pop-up menu, if it says “Unmute Site” click it to unmute the site.
  9. Make sure that Twitch.tv is not blocked for notifications in Google Chrome. (Check Settings > Content > Notifications).
  10. Try watching the stream on a different web browser. The most recommended option is Google Chrome. Firefox is reported to work I am currently investigating issues with the older version of Microsoft Edge. Microsoft Internet Explorer (this is a legacy web browser recommended for viewing out-of-date websites) will not work. Other web browsers, including Opera, Apple Safari, and the new Microsoft Edge, are currently untested. (Desktop Microsoft Edge is only available for Windows 10 systems. Apple Safari is only available for MacOS systems.)
  11. If watching on a smart device (phone or tablet), try switching to a different device (preferably a computer with a web browser).
  12. If watching on Google Chromecast, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire, any video game console app, or any other TV casting device, turn off that casting and watch directly from your smart device or computer. These devices will NOT work with earning tokens.

  • Twitch users can now earn rewards before linking their Battle.net account to Twitch. Rewards will expire 7 days after they’ve been claimed if a Battle.net account has not been linked.
  • It can take up to ~30 minutes to receive your reward(s) in-game after claiming. To be eligible for rewards, you must first link your Battle.net account to your Twitch account. Visit the Twitch Connections page to log in and complete the link now.

2021 Overwatch League Perks (Ended on September 25th, 2021)

Starting in 2021, viewers will be able to earn Overwatch League tokens by either watching on OverwatchLeague.com or the Overwatch League Mobile App with their signed-in Blizzard BattleNet account or directly on YouTube.com or the YouTube mobile app at the official Overwatch League Channel if they link their Blizzard BattleNet account to their YouTube/Google account. Click the sections below for additional information.

Rewards for the 2021 Overwatch League Season

As usual, players will earn 5 Overwatch League Tokens for every hour watched of an eligible Overwatch League broadcast. New this year, players will be able to earn all-new collectible sprays and the Overwatch League branded home and away skins (a.k.a. gray and white skins) for select heroes throughout the season. This guide will be updated as information about new rewards becomes available. See the schedule post below for details on what rewards are earned in each stage of the Overwatch League season.

New viewer features for the 2021 Season.

Encore Matches.

With teams playing in North America, Europe, China, and South Korea this season, watching your favorite team live isn’t always a convenient option. But to make it a little easier, Overwatch League is trying a few things out to help all fans catch all the action this season.

The Overwatch League has designated 24 matches featuring the New York Excelsior, Philadelphia Fusion, and Los Angeles Valiant as Encore matches, which are match replays at times better suited to fans in North America. Encore matches are different from normal match VODs because you can still earn viewership rewards and enjoy watching together with other fans on the Overwatch League YouTube channel, website, or mobile app as they air.

All Encore broadcasts will begin at 9:30 a.m. PT and lead into Watchpoint for that day’s West region schedule.

Clips now available on the YouTube platform

Also new this season, all Overwatch League matches—live and on-demand—on the Overwatch League YouTube channel will feature clip functionality that allows you to clip and share your favorite moments, for up to 60 seconds of video. For more information about how this feature works, go to Google’s official support article.

4K streaming, live player cams, and more

The Overwatch League has detailed more features to enhance the broadcast quality of the matches. Learn more in their article by clicking here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. If I can’t earn tokens from watching the streams, how can I get Overwatch League Tokens?
A. For those who reside in a country not eligible to earn tokens from watching online, you can purchase Overwatch League tokens on the gaming platform that you play Overwatch on. Here are the links:

PC/Battle.net - Xbox One - PlayStation 4

(Nintendo Switch owners can purchase tokens on the Nintendo Eshop app on their switch console.)

Q. Will the Overwatch League be broadcasted on any live TV channels?
A. There are no announced plans for any live TV broadcasts of the Overwatch League at this time for the 2021 Season.

Q. What are the Overwatch League “gray/home” or “white/away” skins and is there any new way to earn them at this time?
A. The Overwatch League Gray and White skins are generic non-team skins often seen during demonstration matches, stat boards, or matches where non-Overwatch League Teams compete on the Overwatch League LAN client (such as the 2019 Talent Showdown match prior to the start of the 2019 season). Starting this year, viewers will have the opportunity to earn the gray and white skins for a specific hero on the final week of a monthly tournament. You must watch four hours of broadcast on that final week to unlock it along with a commemorative spray for that tournament.

Q. I got the Gray skins for D.Va, Genji, Hanzo, Junkrat, McCree, Mercy, Moira, Soldier: 76, Tracer, and Widowmaker from the promotions back in 2018, but I don’t have the white ones, will I get the white ones automatically?
A. No, you must wait for the appropriate hero to be re-released to get the white/away version of that Overwatch League skin.

Q. Can I purchase Gray and White Overwatch League skins for OWL tokens?
A. No, they will only be available through the viewership rewards program at thsi time.

Q. What heroes will be featured to get Gray and White Overwatch League skins first?
A. Overwatch League will make a decision when they get closer to the tournament week for each monthly tournament but mentioned they will give players a chance to have their voice heard in which heroes are selected first.

Q. What happened to all of the homestand matches? Why are matches being played online?
A. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Overwatch League is continuing to play their season online. There are hopes that the 2021 post-season may offer live matches but the League is not confirming details at this time.

Q. Help I am having trouble earning tokens, skins, or sprays. Can Blizzard help me get the tokens that I missed?
A. Blizzard Customer Support is unable to see or troubleshoot Overwatch League Token drops.

Q. Can I earn tokens for watching a VOD of a previous match?
A. Standard video-on-demand playback will not earn rewards. However, there will be a series of “Encore Broadcasts” for APAC region matches during normal Overwatch League hours. See the schedule below for details.

Q. Can I earn tokens for watching an Encore match if I already watched the original live broadcast?
A. This is not yet confirmed, but it is presumed there will be no restrictions to watching an Encore match if you already earned rewards from the original broadcast.

Q. I spent tokens on a skin that I do not want anymore. Can I get a refund on it?
A. With the exception of the 2019 MVP Alien Zarya skin through April 9th (click here), any tokens redeemed for Overwatch League skins or other cosmetics cannot be refunded.

Q. Is there any giveaways for bonus tokens like random 100 token drops after every map played or prediction contests like the Overwatch League Picks?
A. No. Unlike last year, there are no bonus token opportunities at this time. The only method to earn free tokens is by watching to earn 5 tokens for every hour watched on OverwatchLeague.com or the Overwatch League mobile app.

Q. Can I earn more tokens if I watch the broadcasts on YouTube and OverwatchLeague.com simultaneously?
A. No and attempting to do so may prevent you from earning tokens entirely.

Q. Why is my country of residence not eligible to earn tokens?
A. For legal reasons, Blizzard cannot operate the Overwatch League token drop promotion in select countries. The only way to obtain tokens in ineligible countries is by purchasing them on your game platform.

Q. I recently moved to an eligible country, how can I get my account changed to reflect that I am now a resident of that new country.
A. Please see this support article on Blizzard Support (click here) for details on changing your country of residence on your Blizzard Account.

Q. If an Overwatch Contenders match is running at the same time as that of an Overwatch League match, can I watch both broadcasts to earn rewards from each?
A. It is uncertain at this time, so it is not recommended that you should try to do so. Try to decide what rewards you want to earn more when deciding on available reward-eligible streams. Remember the first three weeks of an Overwatch League season will grant only Overwatch League tokens, so if you are needing to collect hours on Contenders to earn Contenders skins, you should consider watching that instead.

**Q. When I try to link my Blizzard account to my YouTube account, I get an error saying “We don’t currently support connecting Brand Accounts.” How do I fix this?"
This happens when the YouTube channel you are trying to connect is associated with a Google “Brand Account” which is intended to be accessed and managed by multiple users. You must either link your Blizzard BattleNet account to a personal Google/YouTube account or you must move your existing YouTube channel to a personal Google account.

  1. Go to YouTube.com
  2. Click on your account icon in the top right and click Settings
  3. When the settings page appears, look for the Advanced Settings link in the left side navigation panel.
  4. When the advanced settings page, appears to look for the Move Channel section and click on that link. You may be prompted by Google to verify your account (especially if you have two-factor authentication features enabled)
  5. Try moving the channel to your personal Google Account associated with your known email address.

If you need to manage what Google accounts are personal accounts or brand accounts, you can find out at myaccount.google.com/brandaccounts

This troubleshooting guide is ONLY for the Overwatch League Tokens, sprays, and skins promotions starting in March 2021. Before going through these steps, be sure to check my announcements above or recent replies in this thread. Also, be sure to check for any tweets from @OverwatchLeague or @BlizzardCS. If there are any issues affecting a majority of viewers from earning rewards it will be detailed in one of those places.

Perform the following steps in order to see if you can correct any possible errors. Remember to check the Overwatch Game Client to see if you earned the rewards in the hero gallery. Any earned spray or skin drops will have no in-game notification or show the icon for the items indicated once they are earned. Overwatch League tokens will have a splash notification at the bottom indicating you have earned those rewards. Prior to that splash notification, you can quickly navigate to the Overwatch League menu from the main menu in the game client to see tokens populate in your current token balance. The game does not track individual token deposits so you must do that on your own.

  1. Please verify that you are eligible to earn any or all of the Overwatch League Rewards. Only users from certain eligible countries are eligible (click here for official rules.) As a general rule, all countries where Blizzard allows game accounts to be created are eligible with few exceptions. China is not eligible for this promotion and should check for alternative promotions with NetEase. Japan cannot earn OWL tokens but can earn non-currency rewards like sprays or skins. Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, Crimea, and Syria, and other countries where restricted or prohibited by law are not eligible for any Blizzard streaming reward Promotion.
  2. Check for Blizzard account actions. If you are silenced or suspended from Overwatch, you must wait until that account action has resolved. (Please note, suspensions or bans from Competitive Play due to leaver violations do not count toward this.)
  3. Verify your Blizzard Account is signed in or linked. Remember you must either be signed on with your Blizzard account if you are watching on OverwatchLeague.com or the Overwatch League mobile app. If you are watching YouTube.com or the YouTube mobile app, make sure you are signed in to your Google/YouTube account and that account is linked to your BattleNet account on your YouTube connections page.
  4. Verify your permissions. Check on your Blizzard Account Connections Page to see if you have all necessary permissions enabled for the Overwatch League page or Google. If any are missing, revoke the access, then return to overwatchleague.com/en-us/contenders/ and sign back in, and grant all permissions.
  5. Check your console account link. If you are a console player, verify that your BattleNet account is linked with your Console Account on your Blizzard Account Connections page.
  6. Clear web-cookies If you are watching on OverwatchLeague.com, try clearing out your web browser cookies or other cache files (remember to sign back into OverwatchLeague.com on the web browser).
    a. Right-click the :lock: icon next to the URL of the website.
    b. Click Cookies
    c. A list of web cookies will be shown, click each cookie and select remove
    d. Press Ctrl+F5 to do a hard refresh of the page
    e. Sign back into OverwatchLeague.com with your Blizzard Account and approve all permissions again
  7. Disable all All-Blockers If you use any Adblocking plugins or software, please disable it entirely for the duration of the broadcast (don’t just provide an exemption to the site).
  8. Make sure that your streaming page is not muted For Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge web browsers, open a tab and navigate to overwatchleague.com or youtube.com, then right-click the tab of the site on the title bar of the window, in the pop-up menu, if it says “Unmute Site” click it to unmute the site. Instructions may vary with other web browsers.
  9. Check for notification blocks. Make sure that overwatchleague.com or youtube.com is not blocked for notifications on your web browser.
  10. Try watching the stream on a different web browser. The most recommended options are Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera, and Microsoft Edge. Microsoft Internet Explorer (this is a legacy web browser recommended for viewing out-of-date websites on Windows computers) will not work.
  11. Watch direct app devices only. If watching on Google Chromecast, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire, or any other TV casting device, turn off that casting and watch directly from your smart device or computer. Casting devices will NOT work with earning tokens.

Overwatch Contenders Past Months

The following heroes have already had their Contenders skins available in past Overwatch Contenders promotional months. At this time there are no plans to re-release these skins in future promotions.

Month Tier 1 Tier 2
October Symmetra* - 7 hours Mercy* - 15 hours
November Torjborn - 7 hours Lucio - 15 hours
December Zenyatta - 7 hours Junkrat - 15 hours
March Bastion** - 3 hours Reinhardt** - 10 hours
April Echo - 7 hours Brigitte - 15 hours
May Baptiste - 5 hours Doomfist - 10 hours
June Sombra - 5 hours Zarya - 10 hours
July Roadhog - 5 hours Widowmaker - 10 hours
August Orisa - 5 hours Ashe - 10 hours
September Pharah - 5 hours Ana- 10 hours
October Mei - 5 hours Winston - 10 hours

*In the later matches during the month of October, some of the hours failed to record preventing many users from successfully earning the Symmetra and Mercy skins. As such a second chance opportunity was granted for users in the month of December by watching 18 and 20 hours respectively. It is not expected there will be second chance opportunities in future months.
** Due to malfunctions during early broadcasts in the month of March, hours required were reduced from 7 hours to 3 hours for Bastion, and 15 hours to 10 hours for Reinhardt.
The Genji Contenders Home and Away Skins is granted to every player who logs into Overwatch automatically, no watch time is required.

NO MORE UPCOMING REWARD-ELIGIBLE STREAMS EXPECTED FOR 2021

There are no more remaining broadcasts expected for Overwatch League or Overwatch Contenders in 2021. Continue to follow official channels or follow my unofficial Twitter feed at @dropswatch on Twitter for news on future in-game reward opportunities.

Hopefully the contenders site is more reliable than the OWL site (in terms of rewards)

Glad they’re doing this btw…good for T2 scene…not sure if this is a result of personnel moves in last month but it is a welcome sight to have contenders being featured somehow

Sucks that it won’t be on the app, would watching it through a browser on phone work?

Does contenders play without hero pools?

It should, I did earn tokens from watching on overwatchleague.com using Google Chrome for Android in the early part of the OWL season.

I think they dropped the Hero Pools for season 2. They were running them for Season 1.

Oh thats really exciting! I hope you are right

There’s no word of tokens being dropped for watching Contenders. Is this a left-over from the OWL troubleshooting guide that you have overlooked and have to delete?

Yeah I fixed it… it should say…

Perform the following steps in order to see if you can correct any possible errors. Try testing when you complete one more or of these steps. Remember to check the Overwatch Game Client to see if you earned the rewards in the hero gallery. Any earned drops will have no in-game notification or show the icon for the items indicated once they are earned.

Ah, yep.

That’s a bit problematic though in my eyes. It means the earliest you will find out if the drops work for you is after 7 hours. So every time you try to fix it you have to wait another 7 hours (or days since the streams aren’t running 24/7).

Is there a way to get alerted when rewards streams are live?

Good point, I will cut out the line about try again after each individual step. Unfortunately with no in-site notifications (unlike Twitch), it can be difficult to troubleshoot.

The best way to do this is subscribe to the Overwatch Contenders YouTube Channel and click on the Bell Icon next to the subscribe button. Then you should receive mobile notifications when the matches goes live. Just remember to watch on OverwatchContenders.com and NOT YouTube to earn the rewards.

I am thinking about starting a new Twitter Account which would only tweet when key events (streams, seasonal events, etc.) goes live or is about to end to give people a great one-stop place to get notifications on any time-sensitive event in Overwatch.

UPDATE: I did start the Twitter account I mentioned about. Follow @dropswatch for alerts on all live streaming rewards, seaonal events, and other key deadlines to earn items in Overwatch.

After most of the year getting neglected, now Contenders finally has some incentives to watch!

So how many months will contenders go on for?

Through November. However, in December, I believe they have plans to run Overwatch Contenders Gauntlet (a multi-regional tournament.) Right now I have the schedule updated as it is posted on the official website.

I do not know if upcoming tournaments or events like Overwatch Open Division will be eligible to earn rewards.

There’s no contenders App is there?

Also it’s good to see contenders rewards be a thing. Now just need the OWL Grey skins to be a thing again.
