Overwatch revival …what should devs do?

i think a better schedule would be a new hero every 3 seasons, but a new map/map rework every season. we need WAY more maps than we do now, especially for modes like Push and Flashpoint. the modes get so repetitive BECAUSE of how little maps there are.

the extra space would give the art and hero design team more time to make new and unique heroes, instead of making them half-baked with no skins on release (cough cough hazard)

If more unique playstyles is what you’re asking for, Overwatch 1’s original 21 heroes actually started out with a ton of them. Sadly, most of them are gone or heavily watered down due to the OW1 devs’ poor skill at balancing combined with their obsession with making every hero “esports viable.”

The current devs could reap a lot of renewed interest in Overwatch if they reverted heroes who used to specialize in unique gameplay alternatives to Point Gun And Shoot BACK to their most “whacky fun” iteration, and then focus on balancing that iteration without surgically removing the hero’s identity & flavor like the old devs did.

That’s just not realistically going to happen. I honestly don’t even think that it would be a good thing.

for me, all they have to do is make the interactions more enjoyable and make match making better (it doesnt have to be perfect but stomps are not fun)

like i stopped playing marvel rivals cause the MM sucks, 5 stomps, 1 good game, 5 stomps
it sucks

for interactions it has to be reasonably fair for each person, this whole while if it feels good to play thats good enough, is not good enough, cause then each person has their good moment and 6+(cause sometimes playing with sucks) working against you. It’s just a massive deficit of fun…

there is literally nothing they can do, since 2019 the game has been a dissapointement and trash after trash after trash, lies, broken promises, the trust on developers, their credibility, their capacity, is done. if they bring back ow1 6vs6 with lootboxes, free rewards, a better progression system, actual competitive rewards a lot of new events, and of course pve story mode with a lot of cinematics moving the plot, well, that could be a step on the right direction but they cant do nothing of this. or at least make 6vs6 permanent with competitive and 2cp, the test was a succes right? what stop them from do it?
oh and then they have to beat marvel rivals thing that dont seems possible

yeah right, marvel rivals developers have it so easy, they have to model a character from scratch, create skins, create abilities, putt effects, sound effects, voice lines, interactions, design, skins, animations, ultimates, balance their kit, test it, but they have it so easy, they dont have to think on the backstory and the name of the new character, thats the hardes part of creating a character on a game. i love how much effort ow developers put on create the super backstories and then developed the characters of illari, hazard, juno and venture, they fit so well in lore, they interact with everyone, their have a lot of story to tell us, illari lore fits so well in overwatch, i cant believe she was the missing piece for everything to make sense, dont you love her great pve mission where she did that thing, and then her hero missions and her amazing abilities on the talent tree?

lol nobody cared for overwatch because is polished, and even then game was full of bug and ow2 launch was a disaster, constant fps drops and things not loading. the fandom only plays for the polish, they make fanarts and write fics about how well polished the game is, they wanted a pve story mode about how this game was polished. blizzard wasted a lot of time and effort making the backstories and aesthetics of the world and characters when they could just use unity and use some generic assets from the unity store and ow would be the same succes it was in 2016, they only need to polish

What should OW devs do? Go back in time and don’t cancel the PvE mode people had waited years for.

It’s not going to happen, overwatch will just exist kinda like TF2, hard to attract new players with an old f2p game, especially with blizzard’s reputation it just collapsed

for me getting 3 heroes a year is too less …look at rivals …they are giving 4 new heroes in just 1 season

No thanks. I want LORE animated shorts. Not random stuff like Le Sserafim animated shorts. Animated shorts that make you say “Why haven’t you made a movie yet” not animated shorts that make you say “haha look at that, this hero is that and that hero is this” but once the collaboration ends no one cares.

Also Rivals characters are INCREDIBLY shallow compared to most Overwatch heroes.

Like the level of optimization for most Strategists in Rivals is basically “when you’re holding down LMB on C&D since there’s no reason not to, you can reload slightly faster by shifting to Cloak and the immediately shifting back”. There’s some outliers (Loki), but even the more complicated Rivals feel very, very simple.

Rivals character design feels like early LoL champ design, where they’d just crap out a bunch of incredibly basic characters that inevitably get outdated when the devs get better at hero design. Whereas say what you will about Overwatch design, most* of the cast has remained mechanically the same since their inception and are still relevant.

*Rework Georg (Sym) is a statistical outliner and should not be counted.

I say this all the time but I’d love to see a big refresh and rebrand back to ‘Overwatch’. The ‘2’ in Overwatch 2 is just a noose around the neck at this point.

To help that happen I’d like to see a season drop with:

  • completely revamped battlepass (or something different entirely)
  • new and engaging rewards/progress systems
  • some old ow1 qol features (medals, after game voting cards, borders, etc …)
  • a killer cinematic or 2 that continues the story or introduces a new hero
  • map voting
  • refreshed menus and UI (this isn’t really necessary but would certainly help with losing the ‘2’)

Obviously there’s a lot detail that needs fleshing out there but that’s basically the scale of it for me. Maybe way too much to ask and won’t please everyone of course.

This is more important than I think a lot of people realise. Completely agree.

lore can be done by a full story mode with cinematic

The answer has always been batch releases, not this dripfeed nonsense. It doesn’t change the game at all in any significant way, and often makes it worse. Big shake-ups to regain interest - not single releases to keep interest - otherwise it’s just a slow slide into irrelevance.

Kiriko’s mother can be our swordsman / samurai Tank hero.

They need to get rid of unfun heroes. Rework them. It kills the game for me. I also don’t like raid boss tanks.

They’re not going to do anything. They do not care.

Some of these ideas are good everything but #5 of course because IP damaging collabs are unacceptable and show weakness and creative bankruptcy, people who enjoy this are so small minded. Do not even put Gotham in this game because then it’s no longer OW which should be a strong IP on its own. But other than that they’re not going to do anything.
