Overwatch is to Deadlock

…as basketball is to Magic cards.

Or such is my initial impression, having played about six hours of Deadlock.

“Slower pace” doesn’t really capture the difference, though it is true. Movement and combat feel a lot less expressive; that’s offset by whatever expression you’re putting into your build, but if you fall behind in levelling then you can expect to just get stomped a lot, preventing you from catching up, in which case you’d better hope that your teammates have been building advantage to offset your disadvantage.

Another issue is that you can’t see your enemies’ builds (and even if you could it’d be too much information to track in the middle of a match), which muddies your ability to make risky plays. You don’t know what abilities they have upgraded, you don’t know if they have lifesteal or extra stamina or shorter cooldowns or what. So you either play it a lot safer, or you take gambles, knowing that what worked great last time might get you deleted this time.

I’m focusing on the negatives here, overall it’s not a bad game, and I can see how people could get sucked into it. I just don’t see how it could be considered serious competition to Overwatch. Yes they’re both hero shooters, but they occupy two very different niches, far as I’m concerned.

Deadlock is more of a third person MOBA tbh, wouldn’t really call it a hero shooter at all.

So if your behind in leveling you can always help out a different lane. You don’t have to commit in the one your in. And 2v1 down a different lane.

Other than heroes as kits… yeah… that’s where the similarity to OW ends. It’s an entirely different genre.

One of the best parts of OW is that everyone is on a totally even playing field as far as available tools. There’s no leveling, busted weapons/items, talent points, or anything else to give you an edge or win the fight for you. It’s all adaptation and execution. It really sets it apart as an FPS. Those mechanics are whybI can’t stand MOBAs.

Literally half of overwatch streamers are quitting for deadlock. It absolutely is appealing to ow players.

I really really wouldn’t judge game audience by if people who’s livelyhood depends on them doing the “popular thing” swap to the new shiny thing.

Third person moba…no thanks.

If that were the case, these guys would have swapped a very long time ago. The reality is overwatch has had no competition until now and competitive players understand 5v5 is very casual and way less fun.

You can. You can hold tab and mouse over each of the enemies at the top, and then see which items they’ve bought.

There’s a huge difference between streamers swapping content sources and players changing games. They’re mostly unrelated unless you’re just a gamer sheep who plays games because other people do.

People who enjoy OW for it’s gameplay and flow are unlikely to enjoy Deadlock, it’s an entirely different flow, style, and pace.

OW streamer was a tenuous position at best for the past 3 years… mostly I’m happy if those guys find a more viable game to latch onto, but I will stand by the fact it means nothing to most actual OW players.

I would say that Deadlock could compete more with … Smite rather than Overwatch, whose only peculiarity could only concern the interest in the selectable characters. but nothing more.

I hate MOBAs so I’ll be hard avoiding deadlock anyways.

Overwatch is more unique imo, but the hypebeasts will go wherever the hype is at.

Deadlock is all about building up your heroes during gameplay and pushing lanes. They are totally different games. Btw I am having fun with that vampire old woman. Not many pick her, minion destroyer, 1 v 1 dueler.

tried an hour of deadlock and hated every second.

MOBA’s are the worst video game genre imo

Not always. In fact overwatch streamers have always had a low viewership therefore a fairly low income. They stuck with overwatch because they enjoyed the game and no other game is anything like it. If it was more income they were after they would have swapped to valorant years ago.

So in this case there’s really not much difference between players swapping and these streamers swapping. They both swap because they enjoy one game over the other.

Listen to what eskay says about it youtu.be/_XfwHMQPxnc

She just straight up loves the game. Seriously like 90% of overwatch streamers are moving to Deadlock or marvel rivals.

People enjoy OW for different reasons. Deadlock has very potent shooter mechanics. It IS a hero shooter in every sense of the word, the game mode is just moba style. Yeah it’s not going to attract every overwatch player but it’s just cope to pretend like it’s not competition.

Anyone that plays overwatch for it’s unique hero design and shooter mechanics could absolutely be interested in deadlock.

Those who play overwatch for it’s simplicity will not be interested in deadlock.

Im pretty sure u can see enemy builds

Deadlock and the Marvels rug pull game shouldn’t even be compared to OW. Both are far more moba like than OW2 is. OW as it stands is still running uncontested as the only true FPS shooter on the market atm.

The only people either of those games will steal from OW are people who want to try a different experience. Not “I’m leaving to X game for a better OW experience.”

I don’t agree with everything you said, but I do agree with this, DL certainly won’t sort me out of OW, there’s no character I liked there, like Jeff or Adan in Marvels, or Mercy years before I even started playing OW, and the gameplay style just doesn’t appeal to me.

I don’t really see Marvel as a MOBA, it feels more like OW1 though
